Mike,

Thanks for your reply. ?I thought I opened up the OBP mike and saw only a few parts but that was 15 years or more ago. ?I will do it again just to see. Thanks for your info on it being a real speech processor. ?I rarely used it. ?

I have used a common mode choke about 10 feet from the rig on the coax to the antenna as I have had rf feedback on a few of my other QRP radios in the past. ?I found it necessary even on my KH1 and CFT1 while in Florida at a rented condo with stucco siding and metal railing around the deck. ?The choke stopped it. ?I see some of the feedline coax from some vendors now can come with a series of toroids close to the transmitter end as a CMC. ?I bought a kit of same from the Wireman at the Florida HamCation this year but haven’t built it yet. So I question that your feedback came from a poorly shielded mic cable. ?Yaesu has good shielding in their mic cables. At least that is my opinion. ?If made in China I have seen poor to no shielding on mic cables. Japanese back in the day were pretty good.

I keep my FT 817 as a souvenir (just like my TenTec 515) of my early QRP days. ?Too many rigs but I eventually purchased every add on option for the 817 that the Brits made….. what fun I had when working. Now retired 10 years and have less time (and energy) than I had when working. ?Ha!

I also have a stand that holds the 817 on top of a LDG Z 11 tuner with batteries inside the tuner. Just a nice small stacked rig with tuner that covers all bands and VHF/UHF. ?What a radio! ?Just too many button presses, rotations, and small screen. ?The same radio with a larger screen and a tuner would be a great radio and would sell well.

Again, thanks for your comments.

I wonder of anyone has “The One Big Punch” adaptation done to their mic by W4RT when he was modding the 817? ?If so it would be neat to see the difference between?
“The One Big Punch” and the Sotabeams processor. ?I think “The One Big Punch” is just a capacitor or a few other parts to knock off the wasted frequencies in the audio but for the price the Sotabeams processor is probably better for one reason or the other. ?I know the W4RT (BHI I think) audio processor that I had i stalled does make a difference in the receiver but that was the most expensive upgrade W4RT did back in the day. ?Any thoughts on the transmission audio between the two transmitter processors??

Re: Sotabeams speech compressor

Hi Martin,?
The update isn't firmware or software related, it was simply me reporting on the received audio reports from other stations and my own observations of it's use. Its a great piece of kit especially if running the 817 barefoot.
You can get the compressor from sotabeams as Robert said, and yes they do sell out when in stock. If you buy one you won't regret it.

Hi Andy, what does the update actually refer to? On the hardware/software or on the settings? What can I do with the existing hardware?

Re: Sotabeams speech compressor

This will be the last update from me on the speech compressor. Had several good chats this afternoon with airfields on the air stations and a portable station in Ireland. Tried with compressor on and off, all stations preferred the compressor on, they reported better, stronger audio and increased S meter readings. Typically I am heard first call with no-one asking for a repeat of callsign.
One station had me at 59+ and couldn't believe I was using a 817, he was particularly impressed with the sotabeams compressor, although he had heard of it he had never heard one on air until now.
On a pep meter the compressor gives increased wattage. I have mic gain set to give 3 bars of ALC with compressor on and both pots set halfway, only regret is not buying one earlier, it has transformed ssb on the 817.

Re: FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on

You might try doing the pa install tuning. There are 2 pots on the pa board where using inline Amp meter with pa an?adjust each pot for proper current. Must do separate for each pot.?
