Re: Home Power Supply for Yaseu Ft 818nd

Search for 10amp quiet power supplies. Many show up for $10-$20.?

Re: Home Power Supply for Yaseu Ft 818nd

One the local clubs around Ann Arbor bought a case of these a couple years ago and sold them at cost ($5/ea!) to the local ham community. They're being used in a lot of club projects.

Needs AC cord (I chop off oc PC cords), and I put Powerpoles on the 12v side.

I have 4, all for radio projects. Clean, solid, and protection circuits. One's always in my 817nd go kit, and another's in the shack.

Re: Home Power Supply for Yaseu Ft 818nd

A very nice power supply can be made from a PC power supply, loads of info on Google.

I modified one for my train layout to get 3.3 VDC, 5 VDC, 12 VDC, simple to do too.

Hi Mike,

?

I have to ask the obvious question first!

?

Are you connected to the correct antenna socket. If you are connected to the rear (SO239) one then there will be an ‘R’ on the display after the frequency. If you are on the front (BNC) then there will be no ‘R’.

Now for the obvious question again. Has anyone actually replaced the final board? What was your experience? Did the board part number you ordered end in a 5? I forget the other numbers. There were at least 3 different board numbers, one ended in 3, then 4, finally 5. I’d get a spare, if I thought I could replace it myself. Mine is a non ND. Thanks

Hi Ken.? Not sure if you were asking me this question, but I ordered the final boards by phone from Yaesu in the US.? I called the Contact Us/Parts number on their website.

?

I don't remember if I specified the FT-817, 818, or both.? From what I have read on this group, one board fits all, so I don't think it matters.? It says FT-817 Final Unit on the invoice.? I verified the part number they have is the same as what I read somewhere on this group.? I have a tracking number that indicates the shipment is in transit.

?

The cost was $26.17 US per board, plus shipping.

All current ARRL members have access to every article in every QST ever published.

If you are not a current member, I suppose you could ask anyone that is a member to grab a copy for you.

You can usually find decent/good low amp linear power supplies at local hamfests (3,4 or 5 amp), but the Pro Audio Engineering units are nice too (I have one I use with a different QRP radio and I'm very happy with it).

Re: No output on HF.

Kurt Savegnago

I whacked my 817ND when the antenna tuner didn't kick in right on HF.? Had to send it back to a Yaesu repair station to the tune of $200.00 plus shipping.? That was a lonnnnnngggg time ago too!? Probably a lot more $$$$$ now.? I was stupid and ran mine through an RM Italy amp when it was apparent I couldn't get out. I missed the tuning protocol on the antenna tuner I had inline one time and whacked the output transistors on the 817ND!

I'm afraid it's going to cost you some $$$$$.? I researched doing it myself and it was too complex.? Sent it back to a Yaesu service center and they replaced the HF output transistors that were dorked and re-aligned the rig.
I suggest you do the same if you want to use it on HF.

Was worth every penny as I was able to run it (and still can) without issue.? I had custom filters installed from an outside provider just after I got it (now out of business) and that darned thing was so quiet as far as noise was concerned.? It almost cost as much to get the conversion done as I paid for the unit originally but well worth it to me back then.

I need to throw a long wire inverted L into the trees again.? I have a 10 foot copper coated ground stake to feed against.? The horizontal of the inverted L was facing southwest but I had a blast talking to operators in Tahiti when conditions were right putting out 300 watts through the amp with the 817ND.

I usually run it VHF and UHF now with a screw in antenna without an amp on 5 watts so that is a harmless way to run it.

I'm afraid if you want to get it fixed, you'll either have to spend the money or be satisfied with running VHF/UHF only.

I bought my ND a long time ago and dorked it shortly thereafter.? Spent the money to get it fixed as I researched doing it myself but it was too much of a hassle.? Wished I had better news for you but
"That's the way it is!"

I bought an FT-851D when I didn't want to mess with an amp and run 100 watts.? I could plug it into the RM Italy amp and get 300 watts (supposedly) out but I dialed down the output on the FT-851D to 5 watts to do
that trick.

Kurt KC9LDH
P.S.? Wished I had better news for you but if you want to get the unit back up on HF, you'll have to spend some money.? Back in the day, I researched doing it myself and it was too involved.

Re: No output on HF.

Hi you say you have output on VHF,
How much power output do you have ,
Often only one of the finals go bad so you still have low output on VHF/UHF,
So yes I think the final board is bad,
Good luck
Keep us posted,
