Re: eBay filters
Is there a way to implement the MAX4581 IC to use as the filter? Around $2 plus some passive components.

Re: eBay filters
OK. The internal Murata filter is CFJ455K-14 (6 Db bandwidth of +- 1.1 - +- 1.3? kHz). The boards available for around $100.00 are CFJ455K-13. I cant find a data sheet on the -13 filter but descriptions from people selling the call them a 2.7 K bandwidth filter. If that is the case then they are a little wider than the internal filter so the audio may sound a little more natural? but a close in signal would cause more interference. I don't have one so I can't give a real world evaluation but I don't think I would spend $100.00 just to find out it's not any better than the built in filter.

The Murata filters are similar to the internal filter in the radio. Probably a little tighter bandwidth but not near as good as the Collins mechanical filters. I'm not sure what the filter number is fr the internal filter but you could compare the specs for the internal Murata filter to the specs for the plug in Murata filters offered on Ebay and other sites. If I get a little time I will open my 817 and get the filter model? number so I can compare. |

What’s the price difference?

Understood but do they work well enough to make a difference? I’m working on a budget and people are asking insane money for the Collins filters, be they OEM or Inrad. |

Re: How to assemble an Collins filter + Board for FT-817/857 and save $$$!!!

Am glad now when I bought my FT-817 years ago. I had it sent to an outfit the name of which slips my mind but is no longer in existence and they put a CW board in and a narrow band filter for SSB and retuned the rig.? That service almost cost as much at the radio. The SSB filter really makes a big difference.? I can switch it in or out as needed.? I sometimes run it? with a 100 watt amp and an external antenna.? RM Italy was a place where I bought an amp from that's likely not there anymore and I bought a? 100 watt amp from an old fellow at the time who is probably dead now who made up kits but had an assembled working amp I could buy.? Didn't have any trouble running the FT-817 through an amp and appropriate antenna and tuner.? Got an FT-857 later and dropped a narrow band board in when I didn't want to diddle with amp wiring in the 817. Kurt KC9LDH

Yes, you will need to search and evaluate the vendors for the "Collins filter w/o board." I got mine on eBay from Japan for $103 but he no longer has availability. I can't vouch for this UK dealer and his price does appear to be "too good to be true." I provide the correct part number for the "Collins 500hz CW filter w/o board" so you can search for it. Good Luck!

Re: Ft5d group
? get the same, tried for over 3 weeks to join, even had a member post on there for me with no results, my e-mail and call sign are the same on groups.io as it is on qrz, no problem with other groups.io im a member of, gave up in the end, not worth the bother, can see why there is a low member count for such a popular radio, not many posts as far as i can tell on that site either, sent e-mails to mod and owner with no replys, if thats how they act then sod em,?

Re: Ft5d group
Why bother with a group that has such ridiculous sign-up rules? It's a fair indication of the mindset of the group admins ?
I use my normal email address for groups.io but have a different one listed on qrz.com. I certainly wouldn't jump through the hoops they're suggesting. The FT5D Facebook group is reasonably sensible and has some good info.? Cheers,? Ronan MM0IVR? |

Here is a filter which outperforms the Yaesu CW narrow filter fIt really doesn't.... It operates in the audio path. I have one in my 817 and it's nowhere near as effective as a proper if filter. It also creates spurious images of strong stations. It's only marginally better than having no filter at all. |
