Chat room
I think its time we all arranged a suitable time to have a chat in
our chat room at a reasonable time to suit most. I can be on almost anytime being just recently made redundant from my last job. How about u Pres ? I know ur busy selling them cars but your local time of lets say ?? my best time is 7pm ish till when whenever the conversation finishes about midnight over here. (ur time 1pm-6pm ?) lets see what we can come up with de John |
My key questions
Hi group (again)..... (oh! not him again , so soon! isn't he the one
who just run my pc outa disk space with his last msg? yawn!) sorry lads just thought Id start off with a bit of english humour, My priority questions on the FT817 woud be..................... Minimum tx pwr ? 50mw then 250 500 1w 2w 5w ?? Current drain on the above ?? Does it get warm on rx ? (it is small and the 100 & 706 does, and they are ventilated) How warm on tx ? Are both the front (top) bnc & rear So239 inter-linked ie. do both do either ? (that sounds confusing) ed. what I mean is 160m-70cm at the front and 160-70cm at rear so you have a choice (I hope its not just vhf bnc & hf rear!!! Cannot see any sort of auto atu in there unless theyre more cunning than we thought ?? Does it have same 3 position equalising dsp based speech system as on the FT100 ?? anyhow thats enough to be going on with I think Pres how about you ? and as Pres says how are u going to use yours.........answers on a postcard please to...............(another bit of english humour. oh well ttfn all de John. |
What Id do with mine Pres
Hi again excellent results I think with all you excitable hams doing
ur bit of detective work, especially Vic a local lad to me (just 50km north of me) ive never met or spoke to Vic until now tnx for pic(s) Vic. (sorry Vic but it does rhyme Hi Hi). Pres I would sit it on my dining room table and hook it up to my 2m 4 ele cubicle quad in loft (yes I did say 2m ie. 144mhz resonant) and tune on 18mhz and work the world with 1 watt ! read it again I havent made any typing mistakes, my 144mhz quad resonates 1.1:1 on 17meters!!!and gives me better results than my 66ft outdoor skywire @35ft height. I have had a reply from 1 US guy whie I was using 1w from FT100 usb on 21mhz, oh yes it also resonates on all other bands except 80m & 160m WITHOUT a tuner!! I know it sounds a bit daft and beats all laws of physics but it does work. (I wouldnt dare use more than 5w theough it) but I dont need to . So ther epres thats what Id do with mine and as our other fellow friend would do (the one who likes hanging from national monuments) I would simply enjoy. best of luck to you but if ur going to be wired up to a backpack looking sus please wear a bullet proof vest. Hi Hi. Well I did say it would have internal power and Vics site says it, I am not unimpressed with the inners Vic I think its much neater than the inners of the FT100 and has anyone spotted the little crunchy things yet to expand tx/rx ? (those who want to). I just hope there is a door in the bottom casing for easy access to batteries it would be a shame if we had to keep taking the 4 side screws out each time you wanted a quick re-change of AA's. and I hope Yaesu have mastered the old FT2/6/790 dc problem on some MK1 radios where as when you have internal batts fitted and dc in-line you may over-charge batteries, some were actually charging the batts through the dc line as well as the charge socket. (ok if they are not ni-cds) I am sure as one guy pointed out the ducky is just 6,2 & 70cm. so I would keep using my portable telescopic 80,40 & 20m bnc mizuho antennas which extend to 58" and down to 8" for storage (and with being telescopic they resonate over a wide range) the one in my pic of 706 has the 20m at 18" len on the top which is resonant on 21.240 usb with 2.8w I had just received a 5.7 from east bulgaria, not bad eh!. anyhow enough of my memoirs for now probably bored u all to sleep. I would take mine everywhere I go so ther u are Pres theres my bit , I will send chapter 2 later Hi. de John Land of the Prince Bishops (Durham) NE England. |
Re: What Id do with mine Pres
Hello all,
I think I would take my FT-817 around with me, along with my FT-530 when I am away from the house and car, like at the mall. I would take it on mini DX hunts, going to any place there is a clearing and putting up a dipole, or a loop and experiment with different HF, VHF, and UHF antennas. Hmmm...... I wonder what they would say at the airport? Well I think I will let someone else try that, I will stick to malls, and stores. I wonder if a short mast hustler with a 40 meter res will work via a backpack? I would hate to have to drag a 40 meter 1/4 wave counterpoise, although I use them on 2 meters and 70 cm. Hmm how about experiments on 160 meters? stick a pole in the ground and mount a homemade vertical to it.......hmm 160 meter ground wave (hahaha). Well I know one thing I would use it quite often. I wonder if it is built as tough as the FT-100 or my FT-530? If so I would expect many years out of it. I have been awaiting the arrival of the FT817 for years. I have enjoyed
the triplets(209/690/790) for years. I am in the US merchant navy and do extensive travelling each year. For me the 817 will me my shortwave radio, my HF/vhf when I visit my relatives in France, and a all together tote along radio for all uses. I do enjoy qrp a lot but for the ones among us who do not I have found a company CCI which advertise in all major mags, and sell HF/VHF amps all made with Motorola transistors. Be advise that after seeing their brochure , the only thing you receive is the board loaded. Connectors, enclosure etc is your doing. I'd rip it out of the box, get out my screwdriver and open it up for a peak. Then I'd strap it to my back and walk all around town like a geek and totally embarass my 16 year old daughter by wearing the thing when I pick her up at school. Then I'd take it on our next family vacation and irritate my wife by tying to make QSO's from the top of every national monument we visit and scare the hell out of all the security personel there by wearing a "wired" backpack. Then my 11 year old daughter and I would sit down somewhere and totally enjoy ourselves talking to all you fine folks. Sounds like a winner to me! Hi. I just thought I would mention that there are over 90 of us now! How soon to a

I caution Americans thinking of pre-ordering from Japan though... Japanese units ONLY TX from 144-146 and 430-440MHz. Unmodifyable... period. This is probably not a concern for Europeans, UK, AUS... but US, Canada, MX, Carribean, etc. take note. Pres Waterman W2PW c/o Patchogue Motors, Inc. Long Island Ford and Kia Dealer GO BILLS! << >> |
Re: FT817 internal pictures and battery details...
Hi Everyone,
courtesy of Kohei Nishiyama (JR0BAQ/ EI4VWT), here is a web site of a Japanese dealer who is taking orders on the FT-817 (which will be released in Japan on the 19th September) << >> The most interesting bit is the internal veiws of the rig (incluning internal AA cell battery pack) which rather disapointingly looks rather spartan...... Still it works though....... ENJOY...... 73's Vic G7PYR |
How I would prefer it to look
g0vgz
I would like to see an option of a removable front fascia to mount it
like I have done with my 706 .Used in a leather case qrp only. Also to the guy who was wondering if he needs a car battery to lug class it as using the same power consumption as the VX5 I know this uses Li-on but the 9.6v on 817 will have a slot for their ni-mh 9.6v pack which will be removeable to place 8 AA batteries in it probably double the capacity than most handy batt packs thats my thought....... watch this space and quote me on it I,m confident de John. |
Nice glossy 817 pic
g0vgz
Sorry guys I know this pic is clear but its all I received. no data
attached I have had a closer look at the other pic and noted....... The Ni-cd pack (9.6v) will be 8 x 1.2v cells = 2w out so if u use ni-mh 1.5v aa cells you are going to have 12v = 4-5w out 4 home channels 1 for each hf,6,2 & 70cm. pms = 2 ch (Lch/Uch) qmb total of 208 channels main ones in 10 banks of 20 channels. cw width 50,300,1000Hz dot-dash 4-60wpm ARTS with cw id APO & TOT (Auto power off & time out timer adjustable) FM TX has both 2.5kcs & 5kcs deviation. The sensitivity as I can see is as follows........... SSB/CW AM FM (ATT ON) 100k-1.5mhz - 3.2 - 1.5-20mhz 0.25 2 - 20-30mhz 0.35 ? 0.5? 50-54mhz ? ? ? 144-148mhz 0.125 ? 0.2? 430-440mhz 0.125 ? 0.2? (ATT OFF) SSB/CW/AM FM 100k-1.5mhz - - 1.5-20mhz 2.5 - 20-30mhz 2.5 0.325?? 50-54mhz 1 0.5 144/430 ? ? I have tried to sharpen image but cannot some of figures may be doubtful as to what they really are, I am going to hunt down the web-site the glossy came from. de John |
Japanese sight search
I have searched for 3 nights for more info on 817 no japanese sight
seems to be showing anything yet. 1 sight had details but no pics and the details were very sparse. does anyone know of a new flat speaker of about the same size as the 817 about 10-15mm thick I think this would be an ideal way to have decent quality while out portable strapped to the underneath. me thinks Yaesu have designed the top mounted speaker in the wrong place, its ok if you have it mounted flat but if you are holding it & tuning with the ducky on it surely a bottom mounted speaker would have been better as this is the side which will be facing you. de John. |

Looking still at the brochure , and at the options section one can see a
FNB 72 @9.6V. FNB has always been the prefix for Yaesu battery serie. Let me know if someone has fiddle with the specs section on the bottom right. I can barely see the numbers on the Rx and the few clearly visible are surely pretty decent. 73 de Patrick W3PO/VQ9PO/ex:F6DWY ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! So far by enlarging the brochure on Word I could decipher a few new infos First and foremost the rig has a built in keyer, a swr metre, some kind of input for packet,RTTY, and PSK31, IPO,attenuator, and IF shift.Plus the unit can be operated from 8 to 16V as does the Ft290/690/790. Also the VOX and CAT system are present. The options inlude a TXCO, a CW,and SSB filtres , a battery pack, and a DTMF mic among others. Maybe one of you computer whizz could enlarge the specs section and let us know what kind of numbers it reveals. 73 de Patrick W3PO/VQ9PO/ex:F6DWY ________________________________________________________________ |
