I'm number 2 on the waiting list at AES in Milwaukee. Stopped by
yesterday and was told they should be here in about two weeks. We'll
see...I'll post as soon as I get my hands on the rig.

Hello Eric
My name is Patrick and I am in the merchant Navy. I am travelling to
Singapore this coming tuesday. Would you know of a Ham store there where
I could buy some stuff(ie ft817).
Thanks Mate

Re: Amp for FT-817?

I just bought a solid state amp from the han store in san Anatonio Tx that takes a max of 20 watts drive for upto 500 watts out. Haven't tried it yet. When I do I will post and let you know how it works. it covers 10-160 metters and comes in "kit" form. The Ham Store e-mail is kcomm@... Ask for MelWA5UTK. They have sold over a hundred of these amps. Mike NH6CJ

Not trying to dis QRP, but if I wanted to run an amp with this rig down in
the HF frequencies, does anyone have any idea what we'd run? A CB amp was
suggested to me, but I can't find any that are less than around 150A...was
thinking more like 50A.

Sorry Hey! If it sounds the same I spell it the same no need to remember
useless words!
at HF all your impedance matching is practically real and so you can get a
way with just matching transformers!

Cheers

What sort of output do you contemplate... and would it be no-tune? He
asked
hopefully but not really expecting...
Most Multi Octave, HF PA systems get away with broad band matching
transformers. Hay HF is practically DC compared to UHF and above. Its easy
to get away with simple no tuning design.
I would recommend you use an output filter though as especially with
Bipolars you will have harmonics to day light. the second 3rd and 5th will
be huge. (hay multi band operation in one hit

build an amp - use a Motorola Engineering Bulletin. Get the parts and
boards
from Communications Concepts in Beavercreek OH (near Dayton).
They have a couple nice boards, toroid kits, chip cap kits for an amp
using
a pair of MRF454's. They also have a 28v kit as well as the ability to
parallel MRF454 boards.

Wow, they make nice stuff. About a hundred years ago I built a 2m amp. Super
nice. I am glad to hear they have PCB kits for ( hopefully ) a wide-coverage
HF linear that takes the FT-817 type drive and beefs it up.

The way every one was talking I thought they had arrived already and I was
really disappointed that no one wanted to talk mods!!!
That explains things a little.
Might mean I get mine sooner next I travel through HK.

Sorry almost forgot,
the best thing about this transistor is with careful design you could use
it on 6m and 2m as well

I've worked with these transistors but they are a bit of over kill. I also
thought that Motorola was phasing them out!
This is boosted by the fact that they dont include data of them on their
web pages any more

I have uploaded a pdf file of the MRF148A which is a 30W MOSFET
unfortunately it works on 50V. However I would say making a 50V supply is a
trivial task to building the PA.
2 of these in push pull with a slight modification to their cct would work
nicely I think.
Thats the whole spirit of Amateur radio get in there and tinker.
I would recommend making band pass filters for the PA as you will be
generating lots of harmonics!

Cheers
Eric.

Re: FT817 Smoke Problem

Gary Mitchelson

Remember, Yaesu has been in this market for a while with the x90's, x90 mark
I, and the x90 mark II's. Althought they were 6M and above single band no
one else tried it. Hopefully they learned with these earlier radios how to
make a nice portable.

I agree that it's interesting to see Yaesu in this market. I wonder if
either Icom or Kenwood will follow?

hear your additional facts.

Over 200 members! Cool...
Pretty good considering the radio hasn't been released yet in the US.
Bet that number will really climb once the radio is out in the US and
the rest of the world.

Also, we have a sample of one here so far guys. Any news on when the
radios are supposed to hit the US??

I went on AES site and they had a button to go ahead
and "add to cart"... they didn't say availability was delayed. It seems they
are ready to ship.

At first, when I searched for FT817 it said "sold out". I then realized they
were referring to the FT-290RII which was priced at $569!

I would gladly pay $200 more for full HF, 6m and 450 in addition to the 2m
on the 290!

FT817 Smoke Problem

I think in fairness it should be pointed out that the owner of the
FT817 that smoked had been inside the radio, and had retweaked the
transmit chain for much higher power than the radio is designed to
operate at. No flames intended here, but could it be that the
meltdown of the choke wire was caused by "Operator" adjustment or
misadjustment??

Also, we have a sample of one here so far guys. Any news on when the
radios are supposed to hit the US??

I must also say that I am thrilled to see a major manufacturer do an
all mode all band rig designed for QRP!! If this radio is as big a
hit as I think it will be, we will probably see the others fall in
line. That means choices guys, and we all benefit. I remember when
you could not buy a superhet transceiver kit. NorCal changed that
with the NorCal 40, and look at what we have now. Competition is
great, and it encourages innovation and progress. This is gonna be
fun.

to get one.
