Re: Powersource for the FT818
I too run? my 818 from my Astron 50M but if the radio is going to be dormant then I use the Windcamp door panel to turn the internal battery off. My YEasu handhelds too seem to have some minor current drain that depletes the battery over time.
I don't use noisy switchers but found a couple of wall warts that work great. The commercial kX3 wall wart is very quiet. John VE3IPS? -- John VE3IPS Radio is a Lifestyle not a Hobby Oprah added the ARRL Handbook to her list |

I leave it in the radio, but I unplug it when I'm not using it. Zack W9SZ On Tue, Nov 29, 2022 at 5:15 AM S1mpleton <sfosgate@...> wrote:

Should you leave the battery pack installed when not in use?
Hi Folks
I have an FT817ND with the upgraded battery pack (SBR-32MH 1900Mah), which I use /P but normally with an external Li On battery pack.? I know that there has been much discussion about voltage leakage when the radio is stored unused but I want to ask a simple question.? When the radio is being stored say for a few weeks should the battery pack be removed, or is it ok to just leave it and then charged before next use?? My radio has the 3D printed PowerPole adapter installed and is usually used for LEO operations but now the weather is colder I wont be heading out as much! Thanks 73, Paul 2E0PJY |
Re: Powersource for the FT818
Hi Ken,
Surprisingly, just the transformer for a true 4 A 14 V linear supply weighs in over 3 lbs and is larger than the entire PAE Kx33 supply including AC mains cable, weighing in at less than 1 lb..? Then there is the rest of the circuitry including the pass transistor or power regulator IC for the linear which must be attached to a decent heatsink.? I have been designing power supplies, both switching and linear for over 30 years for mobile audio and other contracts and linears are great for fixed location, cost and size no object purposes, but to bring along on a trip...not so much.? it is the reason I designed the Kx33; I started buying the other small switchers recommended by hams in this group (when it was yahoo) and others, but they all were noisy. Anyway, at home I run a large, heavy, expensive Astron 50M which works great, but it is not portable! Cheers & 73, Howie / WA4PSC |
Re: Powersource for the FT818
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBy "Old style" I assume you mean a linear power supply..."Clean" switching power supplies are available, but at such low current levels (5 amps in this example), a linear power supply would be small and light, as opposed to a 25-30 amp linear power supply. Re: Powersource for the FT818
Another option is to get the PAE Kx33 Low-RFI supply...many hundreds of FT owners have taken advantage of the special group pricing for the Kx33 and adapter
We have sold over 5000 to hams tired of high RFI and large linear supplies, and of all rig types: EleYaeComKenXieLabFlex, you name it! Cheers & 73, Howie / WA4PSC Pro Audio Engineering |
Re: Powersource for the FT818
Yes that supply will power the FT818 well

That supply will be fine for the 818. One thing to think about is the output connections. That supply is more of a "bench supply" and you will have to build a cable to get power to the 818. Are you planning powering multiple radios or accessories? Are you thinking of standardizing DC connections in your setup, possibly Anderson Powerpole, on your 818 and other equipment? You might find that a supply with a higher rating, and standard power connections, could be a better deal in the long run. I'm not saying "don't buy it" but some forethought can save you a second purchase, or a bunch of small purchases, you were not expecting to make. Enjoy! 73 |

Re: 3rd harmonic on 2M. Any fixes?
I decided to perform the most basic alignment on the 817ND and set the bias on the PA block. I started from scratch and got them on spec, at 37.5mA each, 75mA total. The harmonic is still present but the interference on the IC705 when I am 2MHz below it on the RS-44 downlink seems to be gone/negligible (knock wood). Other than this spur issue the rig is solid and works as it should. It's possible it is working as it should right now :) It looks like I will have a chance to A/B my current 817ND against another 817ND in early December so that should be interesting.?
One thing I did was to set up my FT991A on the bench with the 705 on top of it (my initial LEO setup) and run some of the same tests. The 3rd harmonic is still present on both the 705 and the TinySA analyzer but at a much lower power level. I'm OK with thing as they stand especially if I can consistently work V/U on my current setup without the front end of the IC705 getting overloaded. Thanks again, Pete N1QDQ |
Re: Check out Yaesu FT-897D to LDG AT-897 - Radio to Auto Tuner Cable - 12 inches on eBay!
I've purchased Icom and Yaesu CAT cables from him. All excellent performers.? Maybe a bit more expensive than other choices but I only had to buy once to get what I needed.

Larry, I use the Yaesu Factory Service Center in California. I just sent an FT-897D to them for repair/replacement of a zebra screen. The other two times I've used them they were reasonably quick, had good communications, and I thought charged a fair price for the repair.

Re: Someone with FT-818 and internal battery to do test with external power plug?
Maybe install a bleed resistor. Anything from 1k to 10k ought to do it.?
