Hi Ken,

Thanks for the info and link.

I read that early ND models can also use the software mod. My 817ND dates from early 2004. I read that it was only around 2010 that the software mod was removed...and 5 MHz was probably included as standard by then??

Its hard to believe that the 817 series has been going over 20 years!!
It is a remarkable little radio - far less sophisticated than the modern portable SDR upstarts, but very capable and a lot of fun at a fraction of the price. Mine travelled all over the world with me, but it now sits on the coffee table next to my La-Z-Boy recliner and allows me to check band conditions without having to get up and go to the shack - both its days of globe-trotting and mine are now over! :-)

Ken

It's been a lot of years since I use the program but Widebander worked great.
(This is only for the non ND model.)

FT-817 info and Widebander download /w instruction available here:

5 MHz wideband mod - is there some official Yaesu software.

My FT-817 is 19 years old and did not come with 5 MHz TX.

I am aware of a software mod which I prefer rather than a hardware mod.

Is there official Yaesu software for doing the mod?

If not, what is the best/easiest 3rd party software?

Thanks

NiMH battery - loose inside radio - is there an official "spacer"?

The NiMH battery inside my FT-817 is loose.

Is there an official spacer which is used to hold the NiMH battery firmly in place?

I guess I could just use some foam??

Maybe the foam on the battery door has got compressed over the years and no longer provides a tight fit for the NiMH pack?

Thanks

Ceramic filters failure - is this a problem with the FT-817?

I have read about the failure of Toko ceramic filter in various Yaesu radios.

I have a Yaesu VX-7 and a VX-2200 commercial radio where the ceramic filters failed.

I have recently acquired an FT-817 which dates from 2003/4. The ceramic filters seem to be OK.

I wonder if anybody has an FT-817 where the ceramic filters have failed and whether any failure is linked to a certain manufacturing date?

Thanks

NiMH Battery - 2 positive and 2 negative wires - why?

The NiMH battery pack has 2 positive and 2 negative wires. Is this to spread the load given the thin wiring or are the two positive and 2 negative wires connected to different locations on the 817 main PCB?

Re: Looking for a CAT port Splitter Y cable for the 817

I bought a W4RT One Touch Tune for operating my FT817/818 and LDG Tuner.? It works very well but I know W4RT is out of business.? You might find one used.

Re: Looking for a CAT port Splitter Y cable for the 817

Are you sure you need a splitter?

The ACC plug has TXD, RXD (to control the FT817), PTT-out and band data, all you need to interface an amplifier.
The DATA plug has the signals you'd need if you run digital modes, essentially audio-in, audio-out, PTT and squelch.

So, I'd expect that, if you run digital modes on the FT817, you use both the ACC plug and the DATA socket of the FT817 and don't need a splitter.

Note that the ACC and DATA plugs are different and it doesn't take a whole lot of force to get the "wrong plug" in, after which it is damaged.
Especially with limited eyesight I recommend CLEAR MARKING on FT817 and cables.

Re: Looking for a CAT port Splitter Y cable for the 817

Tried ebay and Amazon... I followed a suggestion to try https://. They had a cable listed as " USB Cat & programming cable with linear PTT out for Yaesu FT-100 FT-817 FT-857 FT-897". It will take awhile to receive it, but it should tak care of the amp and rig control.

Thanks to all for giving me a direction to try.

Re: Looking for a CAT port Splitter Y cable for the 817

Exactly!! Even in my best soldering days, those 6 and 8 pin mini dins were a cast-iron (so and so) to solder. Testing the pin-outs only showed if I got it right or not. If not, I had to start all over again. Now I just shake too much!

Re: Looking for a CAT port Splitter Y cable for the 817

I remember that ten years ago every online cable maker had these "Y" cables for most radios at the time... not so much now.?

Re: Looking for a CAT port Splitter Y cable for the 817

Thanks, I really do appreciate and value your comment. I have a disability which prevents me from making or building cables anymore. I do have the pin-outs for the 8 pin mini din, but cannot hold a soldering iron steady enough to do the job myself. Therefor I am merely an operator rather than the "engineer" I used to be.

Re: Looking for a CAT port Splitter Y cable for the 817

I always check eBay first for this kind of stuff. Maybe Amazon too, if no luck there.?
? ?I would make it for you if it came to that, but my stuff is already packed for moving. Anyone else?

Re: Looking for a CAT port Splitter Y cable for the 817

Some cities have 're-use' shops with boxes full of old cables. If you remember what the pinout was, you can often find a number of them for very cheap

Pietro is correct. Xiegu is notorious for using 6 pin DIN cables. I got my 6 pin males on both ends from some old McIntosh cords and found many old PS-2 mouse cables had all six leads fed out.
8 pins are a little tougher to find, but they can be purchased.
The mouse cords are a (b***h) to solder the pigtail ends.

Dear John,

if your problem is only relative to how to solder minidin and you know how to build the cable you need, you can use the simple trick: buy a cable minidin to minidin and cut it. You will have two minidin already soldered.
I found the cable on Amazon.

the link to the 'cable' mentioned at the very end appears to be dead. But the author is on twitter (or was)
