FT-817 is a fine cw rig. I also recommend the Inrad 300hz cw
filter. Using a Bencher paddle at home and a Palm mini-paddle
portable. One nice thing about the Palm is that the magnetic base
sticks nicely to the top cover of the FT-817.

The Palm minipaddle is VERY nice. I saw it at Dayton. SMOOTH! But
I'm not about to spend $70 on a paddle that's going to get stuffed in
a bag along with a radio, ATX, small gel-cell, headphones, antenna
wire, tuner, etc. & tossed over the shoulder for a walkabout. I'm
not saying the Palm couldn't handle the abuse; I have no idea. I
just wouldn't be comfortable doing it!
My Whiterook M-44 came last week. Not as nice as the Palm, but I'm
very happy with it (esp. for $16.95 US + very small shipping). Also,
I had a few small flat magnets (10mm x 20mm or thereabouts?) lying
around. Put three (loose) in the base of it & they hold onto
the '817's case just fine I'll probably use foam tape to mount them
semi-permanently. I have the Whiterook legstrap too ($6.95, IIRC) --
seems it'll work fine also but haven't actually tried it out.
