Re: Using ACC jsck to power tuner?

Sharyl:
Yes, but have you tried it on battery power? I just connected the
Z11 I got at Dayton and I find that the Z11 won't tune with something
less than 10 Volts on the FT-817 batteries. Tunes fine when the radio
is plugged into a 13v supply.

.... Check that .... something just gave out.

After some work, I determined that I just damaged the 10 Ohm
resistor that's in series with the 13v output on the acc connector.
That resistor is absolutely miniscule, even for a surface mount part
and I doubt that output was ever intended to supply the .3 amps the
Z11 requires for tuning. I replaced it with a 1 Ohm 1/8 watt
resistor, which should sacrifice itself if something screws up and
shorts that 13v line. Also, the 10 Ohm resistor that was in there was
probably dropping a couple volts when the Z11 was tuning.
Now it sort of tunes on the battery (not well charged right now),
but not as well as when I have the radio on the 13v supply. It seemed
that the voltage display was dropping to about 8.something volts
while it was tuning. I'm waiting for my 1600 ma battery pack to
recharge a bit to see how it works on a fresh charge.
I must say though, that I'm really impressed with the Z11 tuner. I
suppose it would be nice if it could tune with less supply voltage,
but I can hardly fault it for that.

Is anyone using the 13.8v output from the ACC Jack to power a
tuner,
specifically the LDG Z-11? Is there any reason why that can't be
done?
