Very interesting! We went through a long drawn out
thread here on the list a while back that was exactly
about what you experienced. As I recall, several
people complained that their 817's finals died after
the radio had been stored away with the batteries
still installed. Some felt that the rig was keying up
and transmitting while in the box when the voltage
dropped to the point where the microprocessor got
confused and keyed up the rig. Others felt that the
finals started conducting when their bias voltage
dropped. I guess either one could cook your finals.

Sadly, because stoopid here hasn't used the rig
since I got it last
year. The darn thing sat in a box. I should know
better: my
philosophy is 'use and abuse' something while it is
under warranty -
if it makes it past that date, you should be okay.
Even so, how darn
many CBs are there out there that have been pumping
5 watts (or close
to it) into poorly matched antennas for years? I
spoke with a tech at
Yaesu yesterday who was very nice and said he had no
idea why they
had the influx of rigs needing the repair. He
speculated Yaesu had
purchased a bad batch of transistors, but added that
they were not
able to cause the finals to fail under laboratory
conditions. I guess
the good news is, he said that once the burned out
finals were
replaced with the new ones, the repair seemed to
take hold and no
such radios came back to the factory a second time.

If you only got one QSO from the rig and you know
it to be
unmodified,
I assume it is new.
Why would'nt they repair it under warranty?

Well, for as much as I spent on the 817, I got
only ONE CW QSO
out of
it! I'm mad as a hornet. And, no, I've made NO
mods or otherwise
abused the rig. So, I e-mailed Yaesu asking for
a quote on
repairs.
Here's what they're sticking:
P/N CB1152001 PA UNIT $266.97 EACH,
IN-STOCK
P/N CB1333001 FINAL UNIT 43.88 EACH,
IN STOCK
And, this isn't including the labor!
Does anyone know of any reputable place that can
do the job?
72 N QRT, DE AA8GK
P.S., I may have a great little portable MF-UHF
Yaesu receiver
for
sale here soon!
