When you put alkalines in, their nature is to limit the current to
some reasonable value due to their internal resistance. The internal
resistance of nicads is much lower, therefore they can supply much
higher peak currents and perhaps get you into trouble either charging
or operating.
Bottom line - if nicads (or NiMH) short out, you can get a fire and
even possible explosion of the batteries - alkalines will just get
warm for a while, then die.
