Besides the normal "transmit into non-resonant/non-existing antenna, blow finals" issue a Z817 can help with, there is the "battery pack drains, the finals self-oscillate and fry themselves" issue.
This issue is a particular concern for FT-817, not for FT-817nd or FT-818 radios.

I recently got a new in box 817 non ND. I just got the z817 tuner. I sure hope I can protect the finals with this setup. Any protection suggestions?? I don't think the first gen 817 can be repaired easily... IF
