Recent final board price / availability?

 

Has anyone ordered a final board recently? I picked up an 817 with very low output at a hamfest and wondered if the board is still available and price.

Availability of the boards in the U.S. is up for debate:

Yaesu has said you can order them, but they also say they have none in stock and no plans to order any.

There is also a statement from Yaesu that says they will no longer accept Original FT-817 radios (so-called non-ND radios) for repair, due to the age of the radio.?

This was debated here over several days, with no real conclusion that I remember seeing - Yaesu will fix FT-817nd and FT-818 boards, and the finals board used in those radios is compatible with the original FT-817 (non-ND). - in theory, Yaesu will have to, at some point, re-stock the revised board for repairs to the FT-817nd and FT-818, so there is really no clear answer.

Compatible boards were noted as available in some non-USA markets, but they may have all been snapped up by now.

Just a thought here, but there are non Yaesu affiliated ham equipment repair services around. Most likely ham ops themselves. Depending on the resourcefulness and skill of these individuals there could well be a solution such as replacing the discrete transistors as components by them rather than being concerned about a board level replacement. I know many of us would be willing to take a stab at this ourselves, but others not so much.
? ?I haven't personally seen what the board looks like, but superficially it seems like the board might be replicated. There are numerous small quantity board makers out there and only need the precise measurements and of course the circuit traces. As I understood it at the time when I was still working, they even had a way to work out the etching pattern on your computer screen. They? could be purchased individually of course, but? maybe someone could get some dozens of them made (the prices per piece go down with quantity) and be willing to supply them to the community at reasonable prices. They could be just bare boards, or could be finished products.

In the above video he refers to and supplies a link for a video where a German tech does a component-level repair,

Pictures were posted to this group a week or two ago showing what the finals board looks like. As I recall, the transistor had an interesting/unconventional connection.

When a replacement board is available, it's cheaper to replace the board than do a component level diagnostic and component replacement by a professional. When replacement boards are not available, component-level repair MAY BE an option.

Remember the FT-817 (non-ND) had finals that became unavailable, so Yaesu designed a new board for the FT-818 that used a different component. (You can't get replacement finals for non-ND radios, you can for the FT-818 radio, since it's a different design.)

Thanks. I had watched that video as well. It may be time to check with RF Parts about replacement transistors. I have done some surface mount and hot air rework. I might sell it as is on ebay as is. I am seeing about a quarter watt on a qrp wattmeter when I cycle through the power settings. Thanks to all

I recently got a new in box 817 non ND. I just got the z817 tuner. I sure hope I can protect the finals with this setup. Any protection suggestions?? I don't think the first gen 817 can be repaired easily... IF

I recommend getting the interface cable for it, if you don't have it, so it reduces power during tuning.

Were these FT-818 finals or FT817? When I called a couple of months back, the service guy told me no 817 finals are available and none are planned on being made due to lack of transistors (MOSFETs)

Mike,

Besides the normal "transmit into non-resonant/non-existing antenna, blow finals" issue a Z817 can help with, there is the "battery pack drains, the finals self-oscillate and fry themselves" issue.

This issue is a particular concern for FT-817, not for FT-817nd or FT-818 radios.

Congrats on scoring a new in box radio after all these years, good luck!

The original, FT-817 finals used transistors that are no longer available, so technically the rep was correct, BUT...

The FT-818 has a (slightly) redesigned finals board that has a new, readily available set of finals, AND it is backwards compatible with both the FT-817 and FT-817nd.

You should have asked for an FT-818 finals board, and he should have suggested it as a replacement alternative.

The self oscillation problem on the original 817 can be dealt with on the older original PA board interface by reversing the phase for the input to it, I've done that to each 817 that has landed in my shack.? At least its worked for me.

The finals are only one place that you can lose power.?
Drivers, Predriver, transformers, and (on mine) one of the power switch transistors to the predriver supply all can cause low power.
?
It is quite easy to check the RF voltages in-out of the p.a against the service manual values.

Please, describe exactly what you asked for and who you asked for, for example:

I called <Yaesu US or Europe> and asked for <FT-817 or FT-818> finals board and I was told ______

I think asking for FT-817 finals gets the 'unavailable' response, asking for the FT-818 finals gets you a replacement finals board that can replace the FT-817 finals.

YES, Yaesu should offer the FT-818 part when you request the FT-817 part, but that may not be happening, based on some anecdotal stories here.

Yeasu releases new Owner's manuals as the externals and user interface change. There've been maybe 5 or more released for the FTdx10 so far. Makes sense as more of the product becomes software defined.
In the FT-8x7 series, it was the service manuals that got released more often. Also, they've started to release what I think of as a "summary" release which includes every part, layout, and schematic change over the total production run of all models.

Last year, F1RVC posted the 817/818 release of the manual in this group at /g/ft817/files/FT-817_817ND_FT-818ND_TS_USA_EXP_EU_E137790J.pdf
Yaesu cal them Technical Supplements.

You'll see that there were 4 different versions of the PA board. They're listed by lot number, not version. (the 817x and 818 versions are so close, they had continuous lot numbers)

Anyway, this is the manual to look at, as it succeeds ALL of the hardware changes over both production runs. Lord knows about firmware changes, though. those remain totally opaque.
