Shaper Spindle Question

Bill White

开云体育

Hi All,?

?

Long time no talk to!

?

I have always been unhappy with my shaper results from my KF700S because I believe the spindle is not perpendicular to the sliding table at exactly 90 degrees.? I would like to remedy this and start using the shaper for more than edge work.? Cab someone point me to an article or video on how to insure the spindle is at 90 degrees to the sliding table?? I will be purchasing the tenoning plate to help my endeavors with joining using the shaper.

?

As always, your help is truly appreciated.

?

Warmly,

?

I’m sure someone else will chime in but I would drop the spindle down until you had 1 inch above the table and come at he spindle with a fixed digital gauge and zero on one side then rotate the spindle to see if it hits zero all the way around. ?If not then move spindle until you hit zero all the way around. ?If it is off a degree you will see it in your gauge. ?

Method 1 - practical geometry method:
1. get an s4s board.
2. face cut board along one side with?a square edged cutter like a rebate with shaper indicated at square.
3A. Crosscut board, flip one of the pieces upside down and see if the edges match, make a ^ or make a V.?
3B. Alternatively, you could also not cut the board in half, but flip it upside down directly against the cutter
4. Measure the clearance and adjust it out with the "0" stop over successive passes.

Method 2 - QUICK SHOP METHOD:
1. Skipping steps from Method 1,? take the S4S to the cutter same as #4 above, and adjust angle until it kisses the square edge squarely, then reset your zero marks on the dial or the dro and now you are in business regardless of whatever is causing the system to be out of alignment. Live to make a dollar another day.

Method 3 - Expensive tools method:
1. Calibrate dial indicators and make or use special mounts to measure cutter offset against reference plane.
2. Adjust.
3. Be proud of yourself you just got it within 0.0001"
4. Make a test cut and realize you forgot to consider a particular variable.
5. Buy or build more expensive tools for a niche purpose.
6. Repeat 1-5 until the initial issue is resolved. Repeat step 5 until your mood is resolved.?

The attached is right out of the Survival Guide. ?

Attach a dial indicator with mag base to the side of the bare spindle, indicate down to the cast iron top, then rotate the spindle by hand. ?The spindle is properly aligned 90-degrees in all directions when the indicator shows NO VARIATION as the spindle is rotated. ?Most MagBase indicator stands have a “V” section on the bottom specifically to attach to a cylindrical surface.

You can clamp a 12 or 18” straight edge between the spindle nuts and rotate in 4 quadrants and bring spindle down and check with piece of paper between table and ruler or straight edge.?
Re set stops as needed. The father you are away from spindle center line the more accurate?

Similar to Mac’s method but with a tool that can also assist in setting your cutter and fence.

Thanks, I did that earlier and I found that my table was no square or flat.? I will be buying the tenoning plate so I thought to make the spindle 90 degree to the plate as that is the point of reference.

David,

?

I did this and found that my table was not flat.? I also attached a good straight-edge to the spindle and rotated it around and saw the same thing.? I really don’t want to get into the table as I have had the saw for 6 years and it has been like that the entire time so I expect no metal memory (if that’s the right term) for it to self-flatten itself.? If not, I don’t have, nor am I willing to buy, the tools necessary to do this.? As I will be using the tenoning plate, I would just prefer to reference the spindle to the plate for 90 degrees.? Am I going down the wrong rabbit hole?

Well, Bill, you already know my attitude about this.

Your KF700 probably has an adjustment bolt under the cast iron top between the saw and shaper to counteract the “sag” that is induced by the weight of the trunion assemblies. ?Adjusting that bolt can bring the cast iron top back up to a more-flat condition (it will never be perfectly flat). ?Of course, if you don’t have the straight edge and feeler gages to check flatness, or lack the inclination to dig into this, then it’s a moot point, right? ? If all you want to use the shaper for is cutting tenons with the tenoning plate, then your strategy will work, but it won’t help you doing raised panel work or any other profiling operation where the cast iron top is the guiding surface.

Similar to Mac’s method but with a tool that can also assist in setting your cutter and fence.

If you’re looking for something to set tool heights, here are some options:

igaging Multi-Purpose Snap Gauge: ??

Share 6” Econo Height Gauge: ?

Shars Avenger 12” Height Gauge: ?

Mitutoyo 12” Height Gauge: ? ?

Joe Doherty made his own - maybe he will elaborate:?

I have an Aigner Distometer which I treasure. ?It can measure the height from the top OR bottom of the tool and is also very useful setting the cutter projection from the fence plates. ?Alas, it is no longer made.

I will elaborate.

I made the MItutoyo Height gage because after trying a few cheap height gages and the Starrett small height gage I did not like the uncertainty of the displays. ?They were always flickering. ?After David Best introduced me to the Mituytoyo displays there was not going back. ?Since I could not find a small height gage to meet my needs I took apart a 12” MItutoyo Manual height gage with vernier gage (impossible fro me to read reliably) I got at auction to use the base and the finger and the finger mounting block. ?The finger and mounting block happened to fit on the back of the 6” Mitutoyo Absolute Digimatic 6” DRO I bought from Amazon.

Maybe it was this one, ?

Mitutoyo 053906B, Quill Kit for Bridgeport Type Mills, 0- 6" Travel inch/mm, with Mounting Brackets

This hacked together height gage was very satisfying to use, was repeatable, small and easy to store.

The trickiest part was drilling the mounting hole in the scale larger as the scale is hardened steel. ?I used a straight flute solid carbide bit in the Rong Fu mill. ?I really miss that mill, David had it set up beautifully, now it is in Idaho making parts for a new lucky owner. ??

I also had an Hebor H50 gage that had a 1mm error that I could never remember if it was in the positive of negative direction. ?I would have liked it if it did not have the error. ?

Joe

In a fit of optimism I bought the iGaging snap gauge a few years ago. The body flexes enough that it is not repeatable to within 0.002. Or more. Hardly the droid you are looking for.

I’ve been looking for an Aigner Distometer since I bought my Felder in 2013. ?They have been out of production for years and I’ve never seen one for sale. ?After trying a variety of other methods, I bought the Betterly gauge. ?It works extremely well and is, in my opinion, very worth while. ?

Thanks – I also have kept an open eye for the Distometer but have not seen one or something similar.? The Betterly and the Hebor seem to both be good options in terms of what I was looking for

Hi Mike?
I recently set up and profiled the ash parts for my friend Tony’s chairs he’s making.?
I used one 250 split slotter, 8 mm for set up 6 ,8 mm spacer and a 6” rule to catch height.
That’s it. Part shown are 68 x 56 x 250 long

I purchased a Betterly Una-Guage with the extension arm and it is nice.

I was looking at some of the items that David listed above.? Then I ran into this today:

Review:

I ordered it with a coupon and should get it in a week.? We will see if it is as quality as he states in the review.
