Good looking machines, I see what you mean with the extensions. In my case I am setup with horseshoe layout using strut down the center for electrical and duct,? Parallel configuration would be great but that might be too tight for me. For your dust collection off the machine where did you source the 160MM to 6" adapters? Looks like you have dust collection control anything special about that configuration?

On the Tersa vs. spiral carbide, I have tersa on a 2006 SCM 24" planer. I purchased the planer used last year and I've been extremely happy with the power and accuracy. I received several sets of new off brand M2 knives with the machine. I have not been happy with the blades as they start leaving streaks on the wood very quickly. The wood species I use range from soft to hard but mostly consist of maples, oaks, walnut, sapele, and poplar. The wood is clean but there are occasional knots.? Are those of you with Tersa heads experiencing similar results? I'm getting ready to purchase new knives and will buy authentic Tersa brand but I'm uncertain about which blades. I'd like to try the carbide but they are very expensive. The price doesn't scare me as much as possibly spending that much money and having similar results to the cheaper knives.? I had a Byrd head on a Delta 15" planer years ago. It would cut anything you put through it and I didn't even rotate the knives for probably 3 years. The Tersa is a near perfect finish until the streaks start reappearing.? Looking forward to your feedback,? A good write-up on cutter head and knife selection from Sam B. on elite @?

With a cost of $4K per machine for the upgrade I have to wonder how many tersa blades you could buy for that kind of money? It¡¯s Ok for clear softwoods but chips easy in knotty and hard material. I have ended up going carbide and sometimes coated HSS from Kanafusa and Leitz. --

Jay,
I would not say that "space saving" configuration is special. ?Certain advantages with one being that if you want them together this way, the planer outfeed does not conflict with the jointer fence and blade guard assembly as shown. On the dust collection question, I used 6 inch hose. The machines came with 1 6-inch adapter. ?See picture showing it on the jointer. ?With that, I connected my 6-inch flex hose. ?I was concerned about so much flex, but not having an issue.... so if it ain't broke. ? On the planer, I used a Nordfab 6 inch elbow to a 6 inch hose adapter, and it fits inside the planer port. ?It is not all that loose. ?Ideal would be to have an adapter to metric. ?That is what I was thinking at the time I got the machines, but since my temp setup seems to be working out very well, I have not been motivated to give that issue priority. |
