I have two F&F jigs, one plain without even a handle, just two bits of plywood and one with Incra fences and flip stops I made some years a go and have never used, not even once. Don't overthink it before you get the saw, I measure off the rip head as a bump stop and measuring from the F&F jig is not needed. Another disadvantage of putting stops on the F&F jig is that when in use the stops create a gap between the two faces preventing smaller pieces being gripped between the two faces.?
|
I always use stop if I need to cut a piece to the length I want. I can always remove the stops if it creates the problem for the cut.
I think the stop is essential for the F&F jig.

I’m confused by "I measure off the rip head as a bump stop” ? and "the stops create a gap between the two faces preventing smaller pieces being gripped between the two faces” ? Sounds to me like you either don’t know how to properly use a F&F. ? Some photos of your issues might let us help you.

David B. Actually maybe I need a lesson on how to use it. I made one when I got my saw and I never use it. As you know I have DRO cross cut fence and Mac's clamps and just use that. I do use the second part, but just to reduce tear out. Maybe you and others can share what I obviously don't know or understand about the F&F

John, sorry I have been away from my computer but here you go. Mine are made of 2 layers of 18mm BB with a sacrificial piece walnut piece of walnut glue don the end then cut to fit. This helps me figure out where the blade is going to cut being I do not have a sacrificial piece on the main fence. The faces of the F&F and the? inside of the stops have adhesive sandpaper on them to help grip small parts. I use this set up to routinely cut parts down to 1/4 x 1/4" while using John Renzetti's zero clearance throat plate. I keep spare walnut pieces in stock to refresh the ends when needed. Once in a while they get messed up and i can refresh quickly. My stops quickly slide off the outboard end so I can use the FF with out for longer pieces. -- Mark Foster

Mark,
I am confused, fairly normal for me.
You don’t show the business end with the stop block. Are you saying, the side with stop block is same as the one we can see? This (opposite to the stop block) side appears to have a walnut color thin piece.

Thanks David., Now I get it so I will hang on to them. I just have not cut small parts at this point.
In watching the entire video, I found it interesting as a prefab building the metal siding was already installed.
Nice shop and he has heat, That is my priority this year if I can figure out a way to do it.

I like my old Biesemeyer flip stops and the wider tape. ?Very easy to setup. ?I used Incra before that. and was not happy. ?I looked into the aluminum extrusion options but I wanted to partially recess something that would grip the wood, in this case, Festool non-skid strips.
I do think it would be nice to use something like Accurate Technology pro-stop, but I do not want a fence without the non-skid, and I am not finding that my current setup has accuracy issues, so thinking if it ain't broke, don't spend money to fix it.
