¡as the owner of a B3, I am also interested in learning more about the approach. My Incra tool is feeling very lonely sitting by itself on a shelf. ?

Steve,?
Your Incra 1000SE modification sounds great! Can you send a pic and/or provide an explanation of this mod. I have been thinking of doing something like that but not sure if I can pull it off. I am sure others would like to see it too.
Thanks!?

I¡¯m laid up with an arm that has had PRP so can¡¯t move the feeder into the off machine position for weeks. ?The issue is that unless the feeder arm is more or less perpendicular to the end of the machine, the weight of the feeder is insufficient to overcome the resistance of the gas shock so the hinge plate is left a bit proud of the plane of the top of the saw.

Re: Hammer cross cut fence coupling set

I own both for my newer B3, so I can provide my $0.02.?

I ordered my B3 with the outrigger, so it didn¡¯t come with the coupling set and shorter fence standard. Thinking I might use them more often and the outrigger less often, I added a 900mm fence and the upgraded miter gauge coupler with detents. When it all finally arrived, I was disappointed to discover that it does not include the 90deg flip stop. Felder would not sell me that part alone, so I ended up having to buy the coupler set anyway to get the flip stop. This I now have both.

Having literally been working to get one or the other set up this evening I have the following observations about the miter gauge coupler with detents.
- The gauge has no way to adjust the positive stop locking mechanism. You must use the 4 bolts to adjust the fence to a perfect 90deg to the blade.
- The reduced surface area as a result of the alignment bolts of the face contacting the fence induces a noticeable amount of flex in fence when handling it as compared to without it.
- The adjustable handles the coupler comes with are too long for the fence track. The bolts bottom out when tightening. You only options are to use different bolts/knobs/handles, or back out the 4 alignment bolts on the face an excessive amount.

After screwing around with it for an hour I ended up just sticking with the cheaper coupler for now because I like how much more rigid the fence feels attached to it. If there was a way to forgo the alignment bolts of the one with detents and be able to adjust the angle locking mechanism to make 0 true to the blade when installed then I would use it. For now it¡¯s an expensive paperweight.?

Re: Hammer cross cut fence coupling set

Richard,

I have the original w/o detents. I use it infrequently but when I do, I check the angle with an electronic bevel gauge. The stop seems to hold 90 fairly well but I check that with my engineer square as well.

Ironically I just received my 3rd slider today and they actually did a bang up job on the packing this time.? I think they have learned that the shipping companies are kind of special now a days.? My initial saw was hammered good by the shipping company sent back to Felder and I got it back about 4 months later with parts ordered.? The second shipment think Ace Ventura as the UPS guy expect with big freight with weak sauce crates.? Today I got what on the outside appears intact.? That being said they have stand up with this, it has just taken about year from initial delivery.? Now I got some extra treated lumber and good screws to upcycle to something and cross my fingers all is good when unwrapped.

I have had the ceramic Guides on my Laguna 16HD (ACM saw) for the last 20 years.? They have been great.? I assume they would work on most ACM based saws - SCM and Felder based on the model...

Re: SCM Bandsaw - Ceramic Guides

Hi Dave. I put the Laguna ceramic guides on my MM16. It's a 2007 Centauro, and I think AMC makes the SCMI bandsaws now, but the guide post is still the same. They work really well, and the installation is straightforward for the top guides, but you have to flip the bottom post for the guide block to fit. Let me know if you decide to use them, and I will send you a picture of my bottom setup. They aren't as easy to adjust as the factory setup on the Laguna LT saws, but they are still easy once you get the hang of it. For myself, it was well worth the expense of the upgrade.??

Re: Shaper tooling - leave on spindle?

Andy,?

Like Lucky and others have responded, my opinion is not one of mechanical?sturdiness of any components, but one of allowing for rust/corrosion.

If you get into a regular habit of using a drop of machine oil (any oil really, motor oil, air tool oil, 30w and up, WD 40 is great too just doesn't last long) and wipe your uncoated parts down regularly, you will go a long way to stave off corrosion issues, which for the most part, are caused by frequent touching, excessive degreasing efforts, and of course, the wood itself carrying the protective films off from usage. If it doesn't feel like you should probably wash your hands after handling spindles/tooling, it probably needs more oil-wiping. I'd oil my cast iron if it didn't require wax for the contact with the wood products.

My tool-changer machines all have long-term installed tools that stay on indefinitely. The?concern is moreso the tool-changing interfaces at the other ends of the spindles. Those that use HSK keep a steady oil film and stay clean even on the rack by the way the mechanism protects from dust (pointing down). The other tool changer CAT30/40 tapers all are out pointing up on the racks and collect wood chips flying nearby, so they get a blast of compressed air cleaning and an oil wipe-down every time prior to a session. I have had a Cat30 fitting get stuck in the tool changing spindle after leaving it in the machine for an extended machine run of months with the same job, and that's what taught me to keep an oil film on the tapers rather than my previous thinking that dry fit was the best for machine tolerance issues. It still?knocked out of the tool changer with some rubber-mallet persuasion and no damage caused. Hope that helps.

Re: Shaper tooling - leave on spindle?

I've got a cabinet maker friend, makes his own 5 piece doors. He has a stack of cutterheads on the spindle for different cope and stick profiles. With the DRO and a chart of heights, they can just raise or lower the spindle to the chosen cutterhead at the correct height with little need for test cuts. Works very well for them.

Re: Shaper tooling - leave on spindle?

Andy,

In the world of machining and tool changers (HSK etc) on CNC machines, often the cutter stays on a spindle for a long time, sometimes until the tools needs to be sharpened.? Felder, Martin and SCM sell HSK equipped shapers.? Some people buy many HSK spindles and swap the spindle with the cutterhead and program the spindle into the machine - I.E. spindle #1 is HSK #1 with a rebate cutter installed with x spacers.

Felder also sells swappable spindle shafts in 30mm, 1.25", 40mm etc, that you can do the same thing with, but at a greater expense as those are much pricier (in general) than a HSK spindle.

I am sure many in this forum know far more than I on the subject, but my brother runs a shop with a bunch of CNC tools with tool changers that are million dollar machines and thinks we are all crazy (and behind in tech) with how we use tooling in woodworking.? My SCM L'invincible J/P was the first machine he was ever intrigued by from a build quality standpoint.

FWIW...

I leave my cutter/s on until the job is done. There is absolutely no reason not to except one that I can think of. I live in a humid environment and everything rusts at some point. So leaving a cutter on a machine, unused for a month risks rust. I often cover it with a waxy rag when closing down at night.?

Otherwise, leaving a cutter on a spindle does not harm the shaper spindle or the cutter. It¡¯s not like it gets frozen or stuck to the shaper spindle.

Think of it like a table saw blade. I leave blades installed except when I¡¯m leaving the shop closed for an extended period ¡ª for example, a couple of weeks on holiday.?

I hope this is helpful.?

I think my question was poorly worded. My apologies, let me restate the question more clearly.

Is there any mechanical reason I can¡¯t leave a cutter head attached to the spindle for long periods of time?? I use the rebate head or pattern head most of the time. ?

These heads are quite heavy, and I was taught to remove the head after each job. But in a constant stream of work that seems like a waste of time.?

Do you all leave your cutter heads on?? Or take them off after a run of work.?
