Festool back at Rockler

it has been sometime now that Rockler is selling festool again. i had heard from a person working at the store that festool walked away due to rockler not adhering to the pricing agreement. apparently they have mended the relationship.

Re: Shop Tour - One added consideration

A wonderful shop, but if you are anywhere near an aircraft landing field, there may be an added precaution.? I friend of mine collected old rusty, obsolete equipment to which he promised his family that he would stop when there was enough machinery concentrated in one place to perturbate cockpit magnetic declination instruments on aircraft using a nearby field well before it caused an incident.?

Just a cautionary tale, even if you still have more open room in your wonderful shop ;-).

i wonder if the dog style (like you are showing) will work with only 3/4¡± thick top. i could not find that info on the bessey website.

any ideas?

If you need the 3/4"size I have 2 that I no longer need since I went with 20mm holes

Re: Shop Tour

Those Barth tables are super nice.? I have worked on one that Joel has, But the cost is seriously prohibitive for me.. So.. what I did was I found myself a 48" wide by 93" long motorcycle lift table and converted it to my own workbench complete with a Paulk type top, with 300 - 20mm holes for clamping down whatever I need to clamp and installed a vintage USA made patternmakers vice on the end.. What's really nice is the cubbyholes that allow for me to store things for an easy reach.? So far it's been perfect.? Only thing I don't have is the vacuum clamps, which I can install at a later date.?
And yes, I'm very aware of the mess..haha..that's production for ya

Thanks for the tour. ?I wish the Multipress had an attachment that would convert it to a FF clamping table with pneumatic clamps that apply pressure towards the perforated top on models with that option. ?

Re: Shop Tour

David:

I have the RP3001, with extra hydraulics (6 in total), the cabinet jaws (4 sets), the lateral press unit (1 in total), and the hold down units (2 in total) and yes the Barth is staggeringly expensive by most peeps¡¯ measure of value. The amount climbs to $20k USD very quickly. I looked into direct freight from Germany to Australia (from Barth), and I looked into using the local Martin rep to get me one. And I compared these to Rangate¡¯s price. Greg gave me the best price. Simple as that.

You reiterated Anthony¡¯s question with ¡°valuable addition for the price¡±? That is such a difficult question to answer for all people. Here are my observations:

1. I¡¯ve wanted a press for a long time but baulked at the price. It is just too much money for what you get. The frame itself is nothing special and any competent steel worker could make one. It¡¯s the ¡°goodies" that go with the steel frame that make the Barth special.

2. The press allows me to work at a comfortable level. As I get older this becomes more valuable. Yes, I can clamp on work benches, but often my clamping jobs are either too large or too numerous to fit on my benches, and I¡¯m inevitably clamping on the floor. I¡¯m sick of fighting with large sash and pipe clamps on the floor, and then tripping over them. I¡¯m also sick of muscling large and heavy table tops off the floor when I have a Fat 300 which easily moves around tops which remain at bench level.

3. An unexpected perk of the press is tied to the power of the hydraulic units. When laminating lots of material together, I was previously limited to such and such a width, based on whether the material being clamped was perfectly straight or slightly bowed. The hydraulic clamps have clamping power far beyond any of my manual clamps.

4. Another unexpected perk is that the Barth is able to perform narrow face laminations with ease, which is simply much more convenient to me than using the VacuPress. John Ferandin who is on this forum is a door maker and has long advocated the use of cauls to clamp door parts. I¡¯ve done just that with great success (thanks John), and I believe that with the cabinet jaws, I will be able to clamp larger/wider furniture parts. I haven¡¯t tried out that option yet.

Is the Barth Press indispensable? Absolutely not. Most of us get along just fine without one. Is it value for money? That¡¯s a harder question to ask. I¡¯ve finally ¡ª after many years of lust ¡ª have bought one and I love mine.

Awesome tour! Wouldn¡¯t mind more in-depth time on each tool. Specifically, ive never seen someone With that Barth table. I¡¯ve only watched a few promotional videos from Barth, but it looks absolutely amazing. Isn¡¯t that clamp setup $10,000+?

Same for the Griggio planer. Other than Marlowe selling one, I¡¯ve never seen the model before.?

Finally, when you closed with ¡°it might be hard to believe, but I don¡¯t do this for a living¡±, that made all the sense in the world to me. Haha I kept asking myself, ¡°what does this guy make and sell that he¡¯s a one man shop with this kit???¡±?

Re: 4" hose for overhead guard

Just follow the logic to keep the line as big as possible up to the machine. Starting 6 from the DC (RL140), I find that 5 and 4 match the best the 6 SQFT.? 5 and 3 reduce the area with a 6 main. No measurement at all, just that it sucks and the dylos is happy for through cuts.

Your case might be different.

Bill

Re: 4" hose for overhead guard

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Increasing or decreasing hose size for the overhead won't change the overall cfm of the impeller, it will just balance the pressure between the lines.? If the overhead? pulls more cfm, the underneath line will pull less unless the impeller is capable of higher cfm than the total of the two lines under pressure.? Since it is hard to judge what will work best, I'd run slightly larger lines with blast gates and adjust flow between the two lines until you hit the sweet spot that works with your impeller and doesn't leave dust in the line.? An impeller needing 5 hp to max out will handle two larger lines but any impeller with less hp spinning it will be the balancing act.? You might also find that the restriction from the hood itself makes a swap in the line diameter less noticeable than you would expect.? Dave

I did some measurements with a very expensive airflow meter I borrowed from work. Going to a 4¡± hose with 4¡± fitting definitely increases the airflow, not sure if I measured the 4¡± hose connected the the 3¡± connector and if it made a difference, it does lower the cfm on the lower port but with the 800-950 cfm i have it has not been an issue if anything there is too much in the overhead as strips can get sucked up.?

I have a 6¡± main going to a 5¡± drop to a wye, 4¡± to the overhead and 5¡± to the saw body which of course gets choked to 4¡± through the saw to the port below the blade.?

I will see if I wrote anything down tonight and try to confirm some numbers, but it is very subjective as it depends on where the measurements are taken, elevation, temp ect, the meter I used accounts for the latter and probably doesn¡¯t matter much anyways?

I got interested in everyones 4" connections to the overhead guard in this thread:
/g/felderownersgroup/topic/77872277#110860

I might do this as well, but I do wonder how you all arrived at this solution. I haven't yet had any trouble collecting dust in my overhead guard with a 3" hose and the original adapter.

Q1: Is the suction from above more important than the suction from under the table?

Q2: Keeping the air at speed in one 4" and 5" hose (as I'm using under the table) might be hard for me with just a Felder AF14 dust collector. Do you all have enough air flow to use 4"+5" hoses effectively at the same time? In my 3"+5" setup I get approx 22 m/s in the larger hose (equals 4330 feet/min), which I think is enough.

Q3: If Q1=Yes and Q2=No, it seems reasonable to decrease the hose diameter for the hose under the table. Maybe use 4"+4"?

Thanks
