Re: I need a little shaper help

Is it okay to use light oil instead of grease? Some of my cutters are so close that I have a hard time putting them on the arbor. I have used pneumatic tool oil (because it is handy) just enough to help me install. I spread with finger so no dripping. Anyhow, is this okay?

Re: K700s commissioning and DB

Steve your experience parallel's mine. I ordered my Kappa 400 at the end of 12/20 and received it last August. While waiting for the saw I totally reimagined my shop, upgraded electrical, lighting and put in all new clamp together ductwork. I too am very grateful for all the advice and help that David Best gave to me in configuring my machine and recommending commissioning. I had Felder Tech Kelly commission my Kappa 400 and AD941. Not all would agree, but I think commissioning should be builtin to the pricing which would eliminate a lot of frustrations. Plus a big shout all to all those who are so helpful on this forum.?

Re: Problem with Delivery of new Felder K770S

Thanks, Steve!

I was not really excited about assembling things. The slider is heavy and awkward, and the fence is also. I am not sure what the slider weighs, but your manifest says the slider and crate weigh about 350 pounds.

Trucking distance from Delaware is some 1,500 to 1,600 miles more than from Los Angeles. Hard to say what that means in terms of cost compared to shipping through the Panama Canal. American trucking is pretty efficient, so I would not expect the cost difference to be great. In fact, Felder must have determined it was in their best interest to route it through Delaware. I have heard of ships being diverted from LA to the east coast due to delays at Los Angeles.

K700s commissioning and DB

I finally got my new K700s commissioned and up and running yesterday. I ordered it in December 2020 and took delivery in late September. You'd think that after waiting 10 months I'd be ready for the saw but, no, not even close. After finishing a project I proceeded to completely reinvent my shop floor plan. Redo some electrical, tear up the dust collection and in the middle of it all, have half my knee replaced. Four weeks after surgery I was under the shop floor (wood floor, 3' crawlspace) putting the DC piping back together.?

I want to give a big shout out to David Best. I've never talked to him but have read everything he's written on buying one of these things at least five times so I felt pretty comfortable building the saw when ordering. One thing I kept seeing was his recommendation to have Felder commission your new machine. I sure didn't want to spend the $1400 but the fact he has Felder commission his new machines really made an impression on me. THANK GOD I FOLLOWED HIS ADVICE! I had put the saw together (Felder's instructions are rather vague on this) and noticed the slider seemed to be a bit high to the cast table on the outfeed side of the blade. No worries as the Felder tech will dial it in I thought. Turns out the cast table was way out of wack. Two opposite corners low and the other two high. The tech had to level the cast, then start from scratch with the slider and then dial everything else in. He was at the house for 9 hours but got it all set up. Thank you Kelly! And thank you DB! I'm reasonably mechanically inclined but I seriously doubt I could have figured it all out before I blew up with frustration. About the best $1400 I've ever spent. I'm really excited to get the shop back together and start cutting wood!

Re: Problem with Delivery of new Felder K770S

John,

The commissioning contract says the saw must be in its final position which I took to mean put together and situated where it will live. I¡¯ve since learned that everything should be uncrated and the saw cabinet must be in the place it will live. And yes, the electrical and DC must be hooked up. They will ask you to measure the voltage and it must be within 10% of the rated power. You don¡¯t have to assemble anything so you will have parts all over the shop. They¡¯re all heavy and awkward so be careful. I got the feeling they prefer that the owner not assemble the saw so they can assemble it correctly and not have to fix any mistakes made by the owner. In my case I guess I assembled it correctly so no harm no foul. It was beneficial for me as it still took the whole day to commission. I described the commissioning in another post. Let me know if you don¡¯t see it.

Crazy your saw is coming through Delaware but it will probably save weeks if not months in delivery time. I¡¯m pretty sure mine sat on a ship for at least a few weeks as it took 10 months to arrive. I¡¯m so relived to have up and running. It¡¯s been a project and I¡¯m not done yet getting the shop back together.

Re: Problem with Delivery of new Felder K770S

Steve,

I would really like to hear about the commissioning process for your K700S. I paid for that, but don¡¯t really know what to expect.

It is called ¡°installation/commissioning¡±, but I do not know how much installation and assembly I need to do. I believe I need to have the machine hooked up to power and to dust connection, but I don¡¯t know if I am expected to have the slider attached, the fence attached, etc, before the technician arrives. I have intended to ask Felder, but have not gotten around to it yet.

Supposedly my machine will come to the Delaware port this month and then get trucked across country to Idaho. The original plan was to come by ship to Los Angeles, but with the back-ups at Los Angeles apparently Felder changed the shipping process.

Re: Problem with Delivery of new Felder K770S

When I went to take delivery of my K700s in late September my heart sank when I saw the slider pallet. As the picture shows one end was damaged and the box had rips in it. After opening that end of box and finding only one very small ding I noted and photographed the damage and accepted the pallet. The saw pallet was undamaged.

The 2x4¡¯s that ring the pallet are simply huge magnets for any number of things to grab hold of while being being whisked along at 15-20mph. These slider pallets hardly stand a chance! The good news is all was good with the slider during commissioning yesterday (separate thread).

Re: Problem with Delivery of new Felder K770S

Bill: that's the most pristine machinery pallet I've ever seen, and I've received literally tons of them. My latest saw hiccup fortunately turned out okay once fully investigated, but it is the first time I ever was in a position of possible refusal, so I'd say yes, guys, you're right. The few bad ones are far outweighed by the successful ones. Just be sure to inspect ANYTHING that doesn't look as good as Bill's crate did. It is your right, I'm told.?

Awesome news Seamus. Yes always suggest looking for the simple stuff. If I guess, I imagine ~75% if no start reported here are stop switch related.

Since 24VAC circuit is normally open on a good machine, it is difficult to trouble shoot your case (high resistance switch) as voltage will appear normal. I believe input impedance of a typical DVM is in megaohms.

BTW, call Felder for a wiring schematic if your machine. They are very helpful.

I know some here have used this to add overarm blade guard capability to their Felder machine. I am sure it won¡¯t go for $25 (plus auction fee) but could be a good deal for someone near Tracy, CA. Grizzly currently sells it for $415.
