Fitting Aigner fence to F900z
Well, this should be easy. REALLY easy. Release the 230 hood clamps, slide old fences off, slide on new fences, smile and get back to work.?
Wrong.?
I can get the fences to the point of sitting flat on the table and flush to the mounting wings of the guard, but only at the remove/replace point, where it is oversized to accept that plunger/clamp disc. When sliding past to lock into proper position, it won't allow me to slide past that enlarged opening. With a bit more force, it simply ramps up onto the shoulder of the plunger/clamp. The evidence is clear, as the paint is peeling on the back steel plate the clamp grips where this is riding on that stepped portion of the plunger/clamp.?
End result? Fence hangs above the shaper table, teetering about 4-6mm off the table.?
?
Tried flipping the back plates, as they're easily removed/replaced. Cannot do this, as it limits the fence opening around the hood. Factory orientation was correct.?
Tried working the set-screw/nut combination on the back side of the clamp plunger from inside the fence. I've managed to get the right side to go on, but the left just won't do it. I do not feel this is the right method of getting a fit, as what's happening is the plate is only being gripped by about .5mm of that stepped portion of the plunger clamp. That is not a very secure setup.? Or is that just how these fit the Felders?
?
Tempted to file that stepped portion down, just a pinch for clearance, but I consider that an absolute last resort.?
?
Seems I could be missing something rather simple, and hoping someone else has some suggestions.
?
?
Thanks,?

Re: Felder FB610 Fence Support problems
Post some picture of this knuckle. I don't know where the four set screws you mention are located, but on my rip fence for the saw which has a similar casting, you can adjust two set screws on the face that the Aluminum section rides against to adjust for 90 degrees. Another mystery: There are 4 set screws in the knuckle. At first blush they would appear to be there to adjust toe-out on the fence. But more you study the placement of the screws and how securing the fence works - the more you come to the conclusion the design is fundamentally flawed. I¡¯m definitely revisiting the assembly diagram as this one is a real head-scratcher.?

Re: Profil 45Z commission and setup
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYes. ?That¡¯s the latching mechanism on-ramp. ?It brings a sagging swing-away coupling component up to the level required for the Kipp locking levers to align and pull the feeder securely against the machine chassis. ?I now see why Felder went to 3 socket-head cap screws to mount the latching plate to the cast iron top: ?they use 3 smaller diameter bolts (instead of 2 larger bolts) so that the heads and the hex-recess of the bolts are lower profile. ?To get the 2-screw system to work correctly, the heads of the cap screws had to be shortened which also recudes the depth of the hex-recess and compromises the Allen wrench bite. ??David Best DBestWorkshop@... https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidpbest/collections/ https://www.youtube.com/@David_Best

Re: Christmas in November
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYea, I have the complete PCS PDF manual, and have read it. ?It strikes me as a potentially temperamental system that could easily frustrate people into turning it off or ignoring it, thus defeating the purpose of a $10,000 upgrade expenditure. Personally, I¡¯d need to see a lot more field-proven experience reports before buying into this option. ?The literature makes reference to ¡°uncoated¡± blades and ¡°PCS Certification", which immediately brings up the ?question about the Felder dado cutters. ?They are obviously coated steel tooling, and I see no reference that they are PCS certified. ?Forgive me, but I¡¯m from the ¡°Show me¡± state of Missouri originally - you know, the Recovering Redneck guy - so it will be interesting to get reports from other users. ?John, thanks goes out to you for being a pioneer in exploration of the PCS system on the Kappa 450, and alerting the community to its limitations. ?Keep us posted. ?David Best DBestWorkshop@... https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidpbest/collections/ https://www.youtube.com/@David_Best

Re: Christmas in November
By the way, the Kappa 450 will accept a 400 mm blade but will not retract it below the table top. The PCS displays a warning if the larger blade is mounted.
?
This fact is not clearly stated in sales literature. I initially ordered a 400mm blade, but spotted the limitation in the PCS user manual in time to change to a 350 mm blade.
?
I thought a 12¡± blade was large. The 16¡± is a monster! It is also extremely loud.

Re: Christmas in November
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýA couple more points:
Has Felder made any pronouncements about the compatibility of the PCS system with dado cutters - Felder-branded or otherwise? Dado cutter use is one area where the PCS would seem to me to be really desirable - it¡¯s by far the most dangerous operation to perform IMO. Re: Christmas in November
David,
?
I ordered a Felder blade when I ordered the saw in March. I do not recall whether I bought the blade because of the PCS or if I just wanted a larger blade than I could get from Tenryu.
?
When I scheduled the commissioning Ms. Rogers told me I needed a PCS-certified blade for commissioning. The Felder blade I ordered in March was back-ordered, so I bought a 400mm rough cut blade as one of the two blades I could get on short notice.
?
She did not know if a non-certified blade would work or not, but was certain the tech would not commission the saw without a certified blade. I don¡¯t know if anyone but Felder certifies blades yo work with Felder¡¯s PCS.
?
After demonstrating the PCS with the big Felder blade, I mounted a 300 mm Tenryu. The saw flashed lights saying PCS was not active. I did not try to trigger the system. I will do so tomorrow, as that attempt was prior to discovering and solving other issues with the PCS and the saw blade brake.

Re: Felder FB610 Fence Support problems
Is the the milled surface of the cast knuckle out of square...
or the holes drilled square...
How about the profile connector,
?
Seems you could photo the problem well to me.
Guess you'll be getting another knuckle sent to you if so....
?
Now, what use might another fence knuckle bracket be....hrmmm?
I guess something useful, but it's got me scratching my head.

?
Good luck with the next replacement.
All the best

Re: Felder FB610 Fence Support problems
I don't know what the casting looks like that mounts to the F-channel and holds the fence, but maybe drill and tap for a jackscrew/setscrew on the low side and jack it up to obtain square with the fence. My F-channel cast iron extensions that I use on the J/P have set screws already built into the system to adjust height and pitch. Brian Lamb blamb11@... lambtoolworks.com

Hello FOG,
?
I recently had Felder send a replacement fence support (sometimes referred to as a knuckle - the cast iron piece that rides the flat bar and holds the fence). What I found is that when tightened the fence is not square to the table. when I moved the fence to the other side of the knuckle (for when you use the fence on the right side of the blade) it also does not sit square and is in fact out of square the same amount but the opposite angle.
?
The replacement knuckle has the same (but worse) problem
?
I spent a lot of time making sure that:
?
I had the same thing happen on my N4400 but it wasn¡¯t as bad. ?I ended up shimming by placing some painter tape on the lower milled surfaces where the fence contacts the knuckle. ?
?
Before anyone suggests I adjust this out by changing position of the flat bar - that didn¡¯t work and it causes the fence to ramp up and down (hitting the table) as it moves to and from the blade. That also makes the fence unstable unless you adjust the nylon screws every time you move the fence. ?I¡¯m sure that¡¯s not what the designers of the bandsaw intended. ?
?
I contend that when the flat bar is perfectly parallel to the table, and the knuckle is properly seated to the flat bar, the fence when tightened should be 90 degrees to the table.
?
Is anyone else experiencing this? Since the replacement knuckle exhibits the same problem I¡¯m guessing this is a systemic problem at the milling station at the factory (especially since the opposite sides of the knuckle (L/R) appear to be co-planar).
?
We shouldn¡¯t¡¯ have to shim the fence on a $6K bandsaw (or any Hammer/Felder bandsaw). ?It should be dead nuts square from the factory.?
?
?
Regards,
?

Re: Christmas in November
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDid Felder give you any pre-sales indication that the PCS system would only work with Felder blades? ?I have seen no such indication published, nor have I heard this from other PCS users. ?It wouldn¡¯t surprise me to discover that your PCS is not set up properly and the technician didn¡¯t know what he was doing on this aspect of the commissioning. ?So before you go searching for Felder branded blades, I recommend you drive this up the chain at Felder for definitive response about the PCS blade type requirements. ?
