Hello and Welcome to the group. What is your name? We like posters to put their name in the closing ?

If you want to explore used I regularly post on my FB (link below). Most are on the west coast but recall one in Chicago area not too long ago.

These are well built machines but things do go wrong with new and old, so it is best if the owner is able to align and maintain these machines. Getting Felder to fix or align the machine is too expensive for most typical hobbiests except for the few who can afford it.

My 2002 KF700 works just as good as new. With used you can check for table flatness, runout on arbor/spindle and functionality prior to purchase. Everyone is different but after buying 2002 KF new all other Felder machines (4) that I have were bought used.

If you are not familiar with the machines lookup someone near you. This is a friendly group and you should be able to see the machine in person. I am in central Indiana so bit of a drive but happy to go over the machines that I have.

Seriously, you probably won¡¯t make any more money with the Felder than you would with the SawStop. So if what you want is a slider, I would say that the Felder is as good as the alternatives. Buy what you can afford and enjoy it. Trying to justify a hobby is tough. Having said that, the purchase delivery and setup of a Felder product is an undertaking of it itself, so be patient. You¡¯ve come to the right place for help.

As an owner of both the virutex and cantex, the adjustment mechanism on the cantex is superior. If you¡¯ve ever used a top 21 it¡¯s the same idea. The virutex is a guess and check.?

Valchromat for cabinet construction

Hi All

Anyone experienced with Valchromat in the group? ?From the looks of it, its seems to be similar to double refined MDF in terms of rigidity. Has anyone built cabinet carcasses out of it? ?If so would it stand up to use? ?Thanks!

Andy

Re: Are Miter saws relevant with a great slider? #poll-notice

I have one for site work (mostly small structures on my properties), but also to rough cut small stock to avoid small projectiles on the right side of the blade.? I also had a radial saw for breaking down rough planks.? No plans to part with either.

Kevin,?
Is it more than twice as good as my Virutex lipping planer? I use that machine quite a bit and have very little complaints about it.

Thanks Jonathan and David,

I¡¯ve had JoinerCAD for a few months, I¡¯m pretty familiar with it. It definitely speeds up carcass and shelf creation, but it still requires the drudgery of importing STP files for each different connector. It also still requires you to physically place the connectors on the model rather than adapt to add the correct hardware spacing (or even type)
Ok, I had the impression that if you spend a little work you could automate this fairly easily, per the link posted in the previous mail, see below:

Hey Albert
Do you not have a Fritz & Franz jig for your slider?? (Google it plus other threads in the FOG have mentioned this)
Probably the most used attachment or jig I use on my slider.? (My F&F needs to be made a lot better but even what I have makes cutting particularly small pieces easy and safe.

Re: Are Miter saws relevant with a great slider? #poll-notice

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

This is a great thread/poll.

?

The crux of the matter, gathered from the various comments, plus my own experience:

?

  1. A Kapex or similar compound angle mitre saw is a very useful machine. It can do precise, repetitive work, and it can break down long boards with ease. (Personally I sold my Kapex as it took up too much space and was not accurate enough for anything other than breaking down boards ¨C like Joe said). If you have the space, it¡¯s a no-brainer to keep it for this purpose alone.

?

  1. The problem is that most of us could use the space for something else. The sliding table saw is an excellent stand-in for a Kapex, both for precision repetition, and for breaking down long boards. But some people just don¡¯t have their sliders configured in a way that allows for breaking down long boards (like me).

?

  1. Like others here, I use a 6¡± or 8¡± (if required) hand-held circular saw to break down long boards, laid out on Euro-horses. Very effective and quick.

?

  1. So in the end, my Kapex was not suitable for precision work (slider is better), but excellent at breaking down long boards (slider is just as good unless not configured for that), in which case a hand held circular saw works very well.

?

Conclusion: If you have the space, then keep your Kapex (or equivalent). But if you can use the space for anything else, anything else at all, ditch it. You¡¯ll miss it every once in a while, but then you¡¯ll be happy that you have space for that third bandsaw, or second sander, or multi-router, or whatever.

?

Warm regards,

Lucky

Subject: Re: [FOG] Are Miter saws relevant with a great slider? #poll-notice

This has been a debate in my head for some time. I keep thinking about selling the Kapex but just can¡¯t do it. I built a new set of cabinets last year and still have the kapex sitting right in the center. I haven¡¯t used it in so long that I need to make a decision. I just bought an Evolution S355MCS Metal Cutting Chop Saw and I¡¯m thinking it may be the replacement for the Kapex.?
