Having yet to actually mount the Felder dado set and make some cuts, I figured this would be a good way to do some tests and see for myself the "bat ears".
Each dado measures 7mm H x 12mm W I cut some white oak without a sacrificial board, no tear out on the cross grain. I've marked the cuts infeed/outfeed. The bat ears measure less than 0.5mm I also cut some Colorfin plywood. It is notorious for chipping out very easily. The Felder dado set cut it perfectly with no chipout on the face. The dado also measures 7mm H x 12mm W For what it's worth, the bat ears are barely perceptible. Like Mac said get out your microscope.?This next photo was taken from my eye level with the pieces on the sliding table. You can't see them at all. Hope that is helpful for anyone else wondering. Re: Shaper cutters to replace router bits
#shapertools
Hi, I find the following for the 125mm rebate head
1) it fits below the table 2) the radius is small enough to match most furniture requirements? 3) there are many bearing type guide rings at, and below that size making it good for pattern copying of rebates Regards, Rod |
Re: A3-31 setup and calibration
If I have a choice I always adjust the non hinge side
For the A3 you put a 0.15mm feeler gauge under the straight edge at the far end of the hinge side of the outfeed table the raise the infeed table using the depth of cut lever until it just touches the straight edge at some point Now adjust the hinge side until the table has no light under the straight edge while repeating the above. Move the feeler gauge and straight edge to the operator side and repeat the above steps. |
D951 Planer, new
#forsale
Hi, new unused D951 for sale still have the original pallet and foot mount cleats for shipping asking $14,000 firm on that for the moment.? Machine is three phase 7.5hp spiral cutter head still under warranty. Small side story I bought a used industrial dust collector awhile back out of state seller stated they had pallet for shipping. I show up with rental truck pallet is two feet short and no power at the shop. Criminy off to home depot I drop $500 on cordless tools, 2x4s and ply charge tools in vehicle then build a pallet. Super sucked.? I can pick you up at airport, drive you to rental truck or just have this ready to go up to you.??Forklift and pallet jack on hand for loading, prefer local pickup but can do LTL.? Location is Cleveland zip 44256.
Reason for selling: I upgraded to a Martin package. Jay Bowen Cleveland |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThis has been discussed and debated several times over the years here on FOG. ?Have a look at the following threads in the archive:Personally, I think it all depends on the type of projects you are tackling. ?It is true that the nickers will yield better cross-grain joints, and tend to limit chip-out, particularly with the top veneers on plywood with hardwood faces, and with melemine particle board. ?The Felder dado cutters also produce a true flat bottom. ?But if you¡¯re planning to do things like make Green & Green or Scandinavian bridle joints, like the one shown below, you either hate them or find them enhancing the overall ¡°craftiness¡± of the joint. ? The nickers on the Felder unit are carbide, and thus challenging to ¡°hone down¡± - I did it once for a project and don¡¯t recommend it. ?I have a pair of Forrest Dado King 12¡± sets that I had bored to 30mm and the pin holes installed which when sharp deal with cross-grain chip-out as any ATB style saw blade. ?I don¡¯t use them often, but they have served me well, especially when cutting very deep tenons on the shaper for projects like Post & Rail fences. ?See below: David Best DBestWorkshop@... https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidpbest/collections/ https://www.youtube.com/@David_Best

AD741 transport
Hello and thank you in advance for any input. I am a proud new owner of a 2012 AD741, not the new body style but the one that the base steps down in width. I have gathered I think on this forum that it can be lifted from the point where the base steps down in width. Basically at the bottom of the planer. Is that correct? And What is the best way to strap it to a trailer for a 4 hr Highway trip? Is putting straps under the tables, where the hinges and locking points are okay? Obviously I don¡¯t want to throw the tables off by strapping over them. Thanks again for your advice.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI agree with Lucky, the bat ears are visible but I don¡¯t design furniture with exposed dados. Also they serve to make exceptionally clean cuts.?On May 24, 2023, at 6:19 PM, David Luckensmeyer <dhluckens@...> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Murray: ? Very kind of you to say that. ? I do not find the bat ears to be a negativity and therefore have not tried to ¡°hone them down¡±. They are big enough to see, for sure, and in fine furniture if the joint were exposed, you would definitely see them. But by definition, I don¡¯t see many (any?) instances where an exposed joint of that type is compatible with fine furniture. ? My main use for the dado is for grooving of drawer parts, machining lapped joints, even making tenons (even though technically that ought to be done on the shaper). For each of these three examples, the bat ears have no bearing and do not show (except maybe at the back of a drawer so there is that). ? If a furniture design called for a full, open groove or trench, exposed for the world to see, then I¡¯d explore a different machinery method ¨C probably a router. ? Bottom line, the bat ears are rarely a problem and if they are, there¡¯s always an alternative. Personally, I don¡¯t see the dado design to be a shortcoming. Those bat ears give me exceptionally sharp crosscuts (e.g. half-lap joints), and any ¡°ears¡± from the nickers are hidden. If the cutter didn¡¯t have those nickers, the crosscuts would not be nearly so clean ¨C especially in cantankerous hardwoods like I often use. ? Consequently, the dado cutter is perfect for my needs. I hope this is useful. ? Warm regards, Lucky ? Dr David Luckensmeyer ? From:
[email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of murrayau1 <murrayp@...> I¡¯m just wondering if there is any consensus on the significance of the ¡°bat ears¡° issue? Lucky, you do fine work, do you find this to be a problem? Has anyone honed ?the nickers, if so, how do you go about it. Thanks. Murray. |
Re: A3-31 setup and calibration
Well, I reexamined my work and found several faults. First, Mac was right. The infeed table was clamped much too tight. Second, I determined that the bolts on the hinge were too loose, causing the whole table to skew. After readjusted and tightened the hinge bolts, the table fell in line and is now perfectly coplanar with the outfeed table. I remember now that when I removed the infeed table (a couple of years ago), Felder had tightened the hinge bolt so tight I had to use an impact driver to remove it - and came out bent.
?I want to thank Richard, Mac, and Brian for all their help. Greatly appreciated. |

Re: Scissor lift
Hi guys Just my two cents.? I am fortunate to have a very large shop with cathedral high ceilings and mezzanines for storage. During the planning stages I knew that I needed some lifting equipment to get the best use of the space.?? I bought a Toyota SWE120XR Walkie Reach Stacker. (Read walk behind forklift).? With this machine I can pick up sheet material from the floor and slip it onto my machines, unload trucks and move lifts of timber, and finished goods. More to the point of this thread:? I have constructed a simple lift cage on a pallet that securely clamps to the forks. With the help of another operator, I am able to work on overhead ducting, wiring and lights.? Of you have room for a scissors lift, you have room for a small fork lift with much greater versatility and utility. I also confirm the previous writers comments about battery maintenance.? If you look after the batteries they will last many years. Forget to check the water level and you are done.? No warranties on forgetfulness. Re: Scissor lift
Good morning,
With this group, I figured someone has experience with these heavy equipment.?? Skylar, thank you for your offer.? I haven't looked at anything in person.? I found a used Genie 1930 on CL, look good, but it sold before I can get to it.? Base on my reading online, Skyjack is the one to get because of what you said; simple, well made, easy to service.? After writing to the regional sale rep for Skyjack (I am in Northern CA), I received a reply.? He said that lead time is until Q1 2024 for a Skyjack 2630.? He sent my contact to the local dealers.? I haven't heard anything back for a few weeks now.? I have been browsing CL, looking at Bay Area and Sacramento.? It's slim picking, but better than last year is my impression.? On that topic, my local tractor dealer has a lot more machines on the lot now than in 2022.? There are dealers advertising on CL from out of state.? I am not sure if I want to buy a lift from afar.? Having a relationship with a local shop is likely important for future service need.? Could you write to the group and tell us how to evaluate a used slab scissor lift??? I believe a xx30 spec allows it to go through an average-width door.? The immediate tasks are electrical wiring, duct work, and sheetrock or skinning the walls with 3/4 plywood.? With the shop expansion, we add a room for my wife's crafts.? She wants it finished, so I will be hanging sheetrock for that room.? The shop will get 3/4 plywood for the walls.?? I will checkout Ritchie Bros auctions and may talk to the local United Rentals.? I feel that used equipment from rental yard is abused, so haven't really look closely at the option.?? Alex, that sounds like a deal.? I am not that adventurous as I am not knowledgeable about fixing these sort of things and don't have a lot of time to tinker too long.? Maybe someday!? I have a forklift.? It's your warehouse 5K Hyster.? I love this thing.? I have a man-basket for it, got it for cheap because someone wanted it gone, but it requires my wife to be around to drive me around the shop floor.? We have fun together, but she has things she needs to do as well.?? Ray, I live on a rural property with lots of oak trees.? A lot of them are dying from a fire 6 years ago.? We need a boom lift to get up to trim the dead branches off to try to avoid them falling, splitting the branch/trunk and put the tree at risk for rot.? It is sad when a 100+ year old tree falls.? Even used, a 45-50 ft boom lift, electric or diesel/electric lift is pricey.? The ones I see currently asking 38K (A JLG 450A for instance).? Saving my pennies!? For now, I use a man basket with a track loader with forks.? It gets me to about 12 feet.?? Thanks guys! SW |
