This should be a no brainer but I have always left the feed switch in the on position, not thinking much about it. Well at least on dual51 it means that feed rollers are running during jointing, which is just a waste. Frankly, I thought the machine is smart enough to not run the feed motor unless in planing mode.

Tom,

Not your fault. I should have elaborated. I assume it is less likely to leave feed engaged when there is a lever involved.

On dual51 the feed rollers are driven by an independent motor with s chain and tensioner.

Actually the two main doors are at either side of the upper rectangular space shown worth a single line on the plans. There will be one extra door on one of the lower angled doors though, and I thought this could be placed to allow for extra J/P out feed when needed.?

I actually did try placing the saw in the middle - and rotated 180 degrees. If it¡¯s the smaller KF it could work but extension and travel of the crosscut fence might get tight. But I might play around with it a bit more.?

I think there will be storage near the back wall but I¡¯ll have to arrange it so it¡¯s not things I¡¯ll need all the time to save the extra KMs of walking.?

Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Michael:

It is always fun to arrange a new shop. Some comments:

- I would personally go for the longer sliding table and wider rip capacity. There are so many times when you will want it.

- The AF22 is not in a good location. As you will want to stack timber (either on horses or your cart), in that area. I find when machining a lot of timber, especially large and heavy timber, using clamps and parallel rip jigs, it is easier to slide the timber onto the slider from the ¡°other side¡± (where you currently have your AF22. Is it possible to move the AF22 into the dead space on the outfeed side, near where the bandsaw is?

- Consider angling the bandsaw a little to help with longer boards for resaw and to accommodate your AF22.

- I do like the idea one person had of moving the KF into the middle of the room so you can put your JP in parallel with it. Remember that you only need lots of space out to the left of the KF right at the saw blade. How often do you cross cut something 12¡¯ long and 4¡¯ wide? Usually it¡¯s long boards that are 12¡± or less in width.

- I use my FAT300 for a lot of things. But you don¡¯t want it as your only assembly table. When machining timber, you need a roll around cart to move from station to station. I strongly suggest you build yourself a modest sized ¡°assembly¡± table and put it against the wall where you have it, and use the FAT300 as a roving roll-around. Either that or buy two.

- I do a lot of hand work, and a FAT300 is not stable enough for hand planing, chiselling, etc. You need something solid somewhere.

- What are your walls made out of? Can you mount storage items above bench height? That way you do not encroach on infeed and outfeed and cross-cut capacities.

- Finally, I finally listened to my colleagues and built a roll around tool cart. Love mine.

Fun Fun!

Warm regards,
Lucky

Re: Can¡¯t tilt blade K700S

Steve,

Take a look at your thread where you said you were taking delivery of the saw today.? One of the guys mentioned in that thread something about a bolt that needs to be removed before you can tilt or lift the saw blade - there is to be some mention of this in the manual.

Thanks Mike,

At my current work I¡¯ll use a trolley as an assembly table and was planing on using a FAT300 for that in my workshop.?

The ¡°AF22¡± in the top right hand corner is the dust collector but I¡¯m still thinking about the best spot for it. I wold have liked to put it outside but I¡¯m not sure if that¡¯s going to be possible.?

Cheers

Re: Workshop Layout V2

Hi Jason,?

Yes i was tempted to go for the narrower rip. But I¡¯m not going to to have a chop saw for breaking down long boards - the KF is going to do everything and I¡¯m going for the overhead blade guard. So if I needed to cross cut long boards (or full sheets) in half I¡¯ll need that extra room to the right of the blade. I do have a TS55 but I¡¯d like to be able to handle everything on the KF if possible.?

Thanks again.

Hi Robert,

Did you end up getting the overhead guard? I'm thinking about purchasing a used Minimax si 315 that comes with a crappy plastic riving knife guard, I definitely want to get something better. I'm waiting on a price from SCM for the optional one that you can order with the Minimax but when I came across the Harvey one it looks like a good option if the SCM one is overpriced.
