He’s forcing the bearing cage to center between the upper and lower sliding table ways. ?You have to do the same thing on a Felder X-Roll to get the bearing cage centered. ? You’d never know that unless you remove the sliding table component from the lower rail. ?No difference here. ?Where there is a big difference is the lower sliding table rail. ?The Martin lower carriage is a welded steel component filled with concrete and does not flex. ?The Felder lower carriage is a flexible aluminum extrusion which is what creates all the adjustment madness. ?It’s less expensive, and reduces the weight distribution demands on the main chassis (tipping and flexing) but needs meticulous adjustments at multiple points which we’ve hashed over here on FOG continuously. ?The rigid lower carriage on the Martin eliminates all the banana-shaped issues and does not flex as the top sliding table is moved fore/aft. ?But it comes at a price.

Hi Mac,

Forgive me guys, but the below table ducting is 120mm on my machine. Let’s blame it on one too many cocktails during the holiday period. Sorry.?

The Kappa design, at least from years ago, has an unfortunate s-bend in the ducting, which goes to a static duct/port on the machine base. This means the ducting external to the machine base does not move. Inside, as the saw unit moves through 45 degrees, the internal flex ducting contorts between the fixed duct end inside the machine base, and the moving end on the saw unit.?

Dust extraction at 45 degrees is even worse than at 90 degrees, in my experience.?

There is so little space in there that it is extremely difficult to tighten a hose clamp. The 120mm is actually sufficient if it were to come straight out the back like your SCMI. Of course 150/160mm would be better. On the Kappa, the area around the blade itself has been choked down (small cross sectional area). There are also plenty of obstructions and no smooth pathway for airflow to carry away chips and dust.?

Let me reiterate that while the dust extraction is not as good as it should be, it’s not all doom and gloom. I’d buy this saw again!

All machines have shortcomings. I’m comfortable with that!

Warm regards,
Lucky

On my SCMI the dust is 6” I think and goes straight out the rear of the saw with a very short flex maybe 10” long.

Nice write up Lucky, now you have me thinking I should have sprung for the xmotion on the k940?.... For what it’s worth the k940 I received with a build date of Nov 2020 does have a 5” internal dust hose well as the saw port casting being 5”, i believe the saw aggregate is the same in the kappa 400 so the must have changed it recently.?
