Re: electrical features for sawblade on KF700

well, the pros and cons are obvious, fast, easy and pricey :)

It really depends on what you do. If you frequently?need to make the non-thru cut at different height and angle, then it is worth it. Otherwise, forget about it.??

Get DRO on crosscut / rip fence and digital height adjustment for the shaper. That is what I have for my KF700sp, no regrets.

Re: door building advice

I have built two sets of carriage doors.? The first, for my shop, fits into a standard 9' wide by 8' high garage door opening (the original plan for the building was to hold a car).
Frame of engineered 2x4, pocket screws just to hold it firm during assembly. They are straight!

Center of 1.5" EPS, 3/8 ply on the outside and 1/4 on the inside. ?

Fasten the ply to the frame within an inch of it's life, glued to the foam, to the frame, and a lot of 4d galvanized box nails.? The idea was to make it a solid monolith.? (I covered the EPS, not just a few beads.)? 3/4" cedar to band the top and sides, to hide the plywood edges.?

1x4 cedar on the outside for looks, to match the trim on the building.? Caulk and paint.

3 heavy stainless steel hinges on each side, with a longer leaf to reach past the trim.? I had to order these.?? A 3.5" screw into the edge of an engineered stud has proven very solid.

2x6 sill plate, beveled to shed water.? A 2x4 center post with 2 1/2" dowels protruding 1/2" from the top, that inset into two holes in the header set in the top.? Angled bottom to match the sill plate, with a recessed bolt that inserts into the sill.? Open the doors, pull the bolt, and a small kick removes the center.

Standard door stop molding + weatherstrip + door bottom seal, as in any exterior house door.? Minnesota witers are cold!? The small bump over the sill is IMHO a small price to pay for a tighter seal, when for instance I back the trailer in to load/unload

I chose to not have any external handles and latch it from the inside. The door still looks good and swings true after 6 winters.

Of course there was some confusion. ?The framers were initially puzzled, but quickly got the hang of it. ?The electrician gasped “Wow this is cool, I can run Romex without drilling tons of holes.” ?The plumber was less enthused scratching his head how to drill for angled vent stacks. ?The real twist was the building inspector needing all kinds of documentation and insisting that “If you want to run Romex through these, you either have to drill, or staple the Romex to the back of the in-facing stud.” ?That’s when the electrician lost enthusiasm - getting a staple on the back of the stud is not so easy. ?Local inspectors can be a real PITA on new stuff like this. ?The spray-foam insulation crew had no issues doing their usual thing. ?Overall it worked great and the additional R-value was a welcome enhancement. ?

As for angling the cripple for windows, I can’t remember the last time we didn’t angle the sill cripple.

Jonathan,

Absolutely right on the wind part. They make a huge sail. I have pins that I drive in ground on both doors I shared. One panel of the newer door cannot have a pin unless I drill a hole in the concrete floor of the porch. I plan to install a hook on the wall and loop on the door.

?

Not sure if your comment on X pattern was based upon my door. I agree with you comment however these door are a stress skin panel and the Xs are merely applied. In fact, when I rebuilt the exterior skin of the left door I made X sit proud of the door but it is not noticeable that the two panels are different unless one is really paying attention. I did this to avoid any potential issues with water intrusion. As you can see in the pic of the right panel, I ran the Xs tight into the corners. This is where the rot started on the left side.

?

I do plan a diagonal in compression on the inside on the large doors I plan to build. Since we are discussing this, I was wondering if two diagonal supports (one each for the upper and lower halves) would be just as good as a single one? If I use a single diagonal it is a bit longish board at over 16’.

My company builds dry kilns for sawmills.? Our standard design door runs on a rail overhead and hooks into place to seal heat in.? We occasionally get request for side hinge or barn door style doors.? These can be dangerous in wind.? They need to have an anchor system when in the open position. Steel side-hinge doors require steel frames.? Lighter aluminum frame doors may be easier to frame and handle and are not difficult to weld or bolt together.? I have a slider on my barn but does not seal.? ? If you go wood, have your diagonals work in compression and abut opposite the hinge positions.? Diagonals that work in extension sag over time because joints and fasteners stretch and come loose over time.? X patterns look cool but only half are working in a cantilever.?

Re: door building advice

This is a staple in many applications where I am correcting inadequacies of standard butt and strap hinges. There is nothing I am aware of that is better performing or easier to work with (or possibly more expensive, but the labor savings on mounting and alignement is worth it every single time). The first set I ever installed was for a set of fully solid church entry door with cathedral peaks = no place to locate hinges once the radius started 2/3" up from the bottom and using the existing frame set that?had been hacked many times over 100+ years of well-intentioned "we need more/bigger hinges"?repair attempts. That hinge was the "Half Surface" style that mounted using through-holes across the door face and anything larger and heavier that would?be my first choice. Normal doors I will use the full mortise with screws mounted and otherwise hidden/concealed.

In making the larger doors to deal with movement issues my preferred?techniques is to lay up multiple ply sheets and press them out into a large laminated core, and then press veneers over them for the style look once you get up into this size range. From there you can cut panels and inset trim as needed and be assured it's gonna be a rock of a door unit.

I personally hate foam core doors I've had to work on several 10 years after they were installed as many find ways to get water trapped inside, freeze, and essentially rot from the core inside out on the exterior side with little hope of sufficient repair == full replacement is usually recommended. And have you tried stripper on them to refinish? Nope. Not a good idea either -if you can't sand them out, you must replace them, they can't handle the solvents needed for refinishing either.

Re: door building advice

Hi Bird,

?

With your upcoming build, you're planning on the I-beam for the jamb, right?

Actually jambs and header are I-beams. Jamb is bolted to the block in foundation below and then bolted to the I beam header above. Cavities of i-beam are filled with 2x material. A bolt captures 2x on each side of the beam web. I built reinforced boxes for each side. And these are lagged into the 2x in cavities. Here is a pic. I have not yet put ply on the inside of the side boxes. Here is a pic of inside and outside of door frame with temp closing of the rough opening.

?

?

You don't think something like an LVL lagged into the framing will be stable enough?

I am no expert to lend advise. The guy who built this for me did structural steel fabrication so I figured this is likely 4x of what I really need J I believe the slight twist that I have in the door jambs of my shop is due to the slip between individual 2xs that make up the jamb. These were nailed together and then in top an bottom plate. I believe this allows for a small movement between faces so each 2x twists slightly. If these were glued together into a 3.5X6” or 3.5”x7.5” (do not remember how many 2x are there anymore) monolithic beam I do not think it would twist between plates. Just my thought. So LVL of appropriate size likely will be fine but you really need to ask an expert. I know truss suppliers provide engineering support for truss design; if they sell LVLs they may be able to figure it out for you. I would imagine that you might still need a steel bracket to connect LVL header to LVL jambs.

?

How will you install the beam?
Obviously it is already installed. Here is a pic of how it was done. First, I do not recommend it because it likely violates many safety rules. The vertical beams have plates welded to the bottom. These needed to be brought on top of the foundation blocks that were 4” above concrete floor. I blocked the plates up, as the frame laid on the floor, so that their top edge was above block’s top. So when the frame was raised the plate will be on top of the block. Yellow truck had a come-along attached between truck and rope. This allowed us to raise the frame to an angle that ensured it won’t go over. Then I used the come-along to get the frame all the way up while red truck ensured that it does not go over.

?

?

In your first picture, those look like ball bearing hinges. Are the ones on your shop door also ball bearing style?

The first pic hinge only has a bearing on bottom (1 per hinge) and the bearing is is flat. Here is a close up. This door has only been up a yr.

?

Shop door hinges have top and bottom hinge – see pic below.

?

These bearings have a flange so they sit in the pintle opening of the strap hinge. I could not find replacement for these bearings.

?

I love the look of strap hinges but they certainly are not as reliable/durable as alternatives. They also force the door exterior to be flush with trim unless you can find some with an offset. I would recommend exploring that if the door is going to be out in the open as opposed to under a porch. If you cannot find a hinge that allows the door to be slightly recessed then I would explore the top trim to be proud of the side trim so the rain has a chance to fall in front of the door as opposed to top of it. I do have a weather strip on top but it takes careful install to have even gaps.

In your first picture, those look like ball bearing hinges. Are the ones on your shop door also ball bearing style? That's what I was thinking of using. If they last 18 years, I'll be happy and old enough to want to hire someone to fix them : )

Based on my experience with french door installation, the three point locks are a good idea. It seems like those doors are always a bit tricky and that locking mechanism does a lot to keep them closed tight.

Kind regards,

I think it would be nice to have an easily removal very smooth surface accessory table as an option when you want no friction when moving things by hand along the sanding surface with the fences flipped up, but seems a waste of that machine to have it dedicated to this option.
