Re: Euro Guard on K700
#sawsetup
Mac: I recently put in another thread related to this issue, seeking a way to not have the verticle support stem for the Felder Overarm Guard "in the way" at the right side of the machine, with the goal of being able to cut sheets of plywood in half using the crosscut fence and slider. I don't have a machine yet, but am planning my purchase for a KF 700. My thinking is that if the pivot point were in the same place that Felder has it now, it would swing out of the way counterclockwise. Learning that it is impractical (and inadvantageous) to remove the guard for such cuts, I started thinking of ceiling mount options. Looking around for examples, or products, I didn't find much that looked suitable. So, I remembered this thread in which you said you had modified the Felder Guard to suit your needs. Here is my question:
Do you think it would be feasible and make sense to mount the felder overarm guard from the ceiling from the same post (added on to, of course) that normally attaches to the right side of the table? Instead of attaching to the machine at this position, the attachment square tube would be flipped and go up toward the ceiling attachment. |
Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAlso to clarify, I have the 49¡± rip capacity. My guard support actually has multiple holes that are unused but seem that it could be mounted further out by about 6-9¡± based on the hole locations but not in (like for the 31¡±) without some simple modifications. Either Felder sent me the wrong guard mount (doubtful... doesn¡¯t matter, happy with the 49¡±), it¡¯s meant for two different saws and not for 49¡± or 31¡± or who knows...Regards, Mark On Feb 24, 2020, at 8:15 PM, Mark Kessler via Groups.Io <mkessler10@...> wrote:

Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGlen is correct. I had the same setup on my K975 and my KF700. ?Some machines come standard with the ability to mount the support arm at the 31-inch or 49-inch clearance position irrespective of the rip fence capacity. ?Other machines, like my Kappa 400 xMotion, have to be ordered with 31¡± rip and 49¡± overhead guard position if that¡¯s what you want. ?It all depends on how the support bracket is designed and how it attaches to the machine, which is machine specific.?David Best - via mobile phone? I do believe if I remember correctly that David Best has a 31" saw but got the 50" OH guard. But that was on a kappa. Glen Big Tree Woodworking P.O. Box 257 Avery Ca 95224 On Mon, Feb 24, 2020 at 5:15 PM Mark Kessler <mkessler10@...> wrote:

Re: KF 500 zero clearance saw insert
It's a shame that the K975 sliding tablesaw has 3 separate inserts, making a ZCI is difficult.?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Jim. I made a few at one time for the Hammer and 500 Series. But there wasn't that much demand at the time to make it worthwhile.? I'm just making them for the 700 series.? But with an investment in your time you can make your own. The key is to leave enough material on the slider side to prevent that thinner side from breaking.? Take care John.? Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSo Felder did tell me that guard ?could be positioned for either without modification however I just checked and it would need to be cut down a little and a hole or two drilled then it could be used for either the 31 or 49?Regards, Mark On Feb 24, 2020, at 7:48 PM, James Zhu <james.zhu2@...> wrote:

Mark, Looking at the K740 overhead dust collection on Felder USA website, I doubt the rip capacity is adjustable between?31 and 49. ?? Looking in the k700 manual shows the the KF mounts different than the k700

Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
Our two KF700's are both the 31" rip versions, neither with an overarm guard. With the riving knife mounted guard, nothing prevents you from cross cutting a sheet in half other than ours being short sliders with the fence usually on the operator end of the slider.
I don't know what the Felder overarm guard mount looks like. However, the overarm on my Panhans saw has a horizontal tube mounted to the back of the saw chassis. The arm is movable or removable with just one kip lever on that horizontal tube. It has 49" rip capacity, but the guard is movable far enough to probably accommodate 60" if you needed it. It's a super simple clever design. Jason Holtz J. Holtz Furniture 3307 Snelling Ave. South Minneapolis, MN 55406 612 432-2765 -- Jason J. Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
Mark, My KF700 is a 2017 model. I ordered the 31" rip capacity model, cause the 49 would take too much space in the double car garage, I do not think the rip capacity is adjustable?on the 2017 model. Also,? On Mon, Feb 24, 2020 at 5:47 PM Mk Vt <mkessler10@...> wrote:

Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
I have the 31" rip capacity and yes, the overhead guard would be in the way of you attempting to clear 48" right of blade. That is why I've been looking for a more custom solution w.r.t. the overhead guard, so that I can clear 48", if I need to.
My thought is the Felder overhead guard would limit you with this kind of cut since taking it off is not an every option. I would consider keeping the Euro Guard II setup or. buying a separate, such as the Grizzly, that sits on the floor and not bolted to the saw chassis. This gives you the most flexibility. That or fabricating a custom overhead arm, that clears 48".? |
Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
I would?add to James's remark my first thought was that a track saw would?seem very cheap compared to modifying the overhead guard again....then I thought, you can probably crosscut until you hit the upright, pull back, flip the plywood, and cut again and get nearly through. Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI don¡¯t know what year your saw is or if the overhead guard setup is the same as mine which is a 2019 k700s but mine can be installed in the 49 or the 31 position, so if yours is the same and you had room you could reinstall it in the 49 position, took me and the tech less than an hour to install?Regards, Mark On Feb 24, 2020, at 5:33 PM, James Zhu <james.zhu2@...> wrote:

Re: KF 700 cutting a sheet of plywood in half
I have KF700 with overhead dust collection and 31¡± rip capacity. No way I would remove the overhead arm dust collection. Felder technician told me it took him and a helper more than 2 hours to install it before delivery. I would use track saw to cut the plywood in half if ever needed. If you do not have a track saw, this is a reason to have it. James On Mon, Feb 24, 2020 at 4:20 PM <kumar@...> wrote:
