Aaron,
I sold the AD-941, but the front mount can be a shin crushing experience.? I have a 20" wide pallet jack and you would need to keep the bolts that you install on the back for removing it from the pallet to use a 20" wide pallet jack.? Plus it is hard to use the pallet jack that way when the tables are lowered! There are compromises in both scenarios.? looking back I am not sure what I would pick if I did it again.? In the review I did, I was closer to it and said no to the mobility kit. PK |
Re: One dust collector to rule them all?
Hi Tom,
That's great to hear! Thank you for sharing your setup, it sounds like I may not need to spring for extra dust collection after all, and the space saved with that is just as welcome. I don't have a specific plan for what my needs are going to be just yet with the sander. I'm looking at the powermax 37" dual drum because it looks like it's easily mobile and could handle a wide array of sizes. Also seems to be well regarded, but I've also heard quite the opposite from some. My hope is to do cabinetry but I'll be the first to admit that my ignorance overshadows my abilities at this point in my woodworking. I'm planning on doing Phase Perfect enterprise 10 or 15hp. I asked my Felder salesperson to talk to the team about what would be ideal for my setup. Maybe by the time I'm ready for larger cabinet component sanding I'll be able to find a used 3 phase WB sander. Thanks,? Kyle? |
Re: One dust collector to rule them all?
Hi Kyle,?
I have a recent model RL 160 with 4hp 3phase motor, pneumatic filter cleaning, and antistatic filters.? I have been using it to serve a North State 16" wide belt sander, and I've been satisfied with the results. Now, I wasn't running it for 6 hours at a time, more like 20-30 minute sessions, giving the RL a chance to clean the filters in between.? I only recently installed my central duct system, so my experience is base on connecting the sander to the RL via ~12' of 5" flex hose, I suspect the performance will be nothing but better using 6" Nordfab.? David Best has been using a RL 160 in conjunction with a North State 16" wide belt for years and it is my understanding that he gets satisfactory results.? How wide are the drums on your dual drum sander? When I was doing the research on outfitting my 700 sq-ft Shop, I found that the 16" wide belt sander was about as large a sander as I could go. The larger sanders would require a larger size of phase converter (I'm running a 10hp converter)(or utility 3 phase), and the dust collection requirements balloon very quickly. I don't do a ton of sanding, so for my specific needs, the 16" wide belt works great for solid wood, pieces, and if I need a really wide capacity there are a number of local resources with 43"+ wide belt sanders whereI can rent time.? My RL 160 is relatively quiet, emptying the dust bins is pretty easy, and having the pneumatically actuated filter cleaning is a dream.? -- Tom Gensmer Heritage Home Renewals, LLC Minneapolis, MN |
Re: One dust collector to rule them all?
Hi Kyle,
I recently received a new RL160 with auto clean, auto start to replace an RL160 without. Machine price was ~$6,700 much quieter than a cyclone with no blow by dust collecting around the exhaust.? The RL200 is in the same chassis as the RL160 but three phase, the next steps up on bigger models use compressed air to blow the pleats clean during operation that's where you can sand all day long.? Now for half that a cyclone is going to do a great job as the mid level RL's have limited filter area and no way to drop out fines like a cyclone has.? The RL decibel output is about 70db, the Cyclones are 85db, the RL is [email protected]" single phase and Cyclones are 3hp@6" or 5hp@8" typically.? Like many things there are tradeoffs for noise, HP, duct size and cleaning methods.? IMO If you are going to use a WBS I suggest a cyclone or pleat cleaning style collector during operation otherwise the low noise, auto clean and high efficiency of the RL is going to work well for you. Other options are Nederman bag systems https://www.hermance.com/Industrial/New-Machines/Nederman-S-500-5HP-Filter-Dust-Collector $9,000 or AL-KO the latter starting at $15,000. -- Jay Bowen Cleveland |
Re: One dust collector to rule them all?
Thanks everyone for the replies. It looks like I'll have to come up with some other solution for sanding. I'm not at the stage where I'm buying a sander in the immediate future, I'm just trying to future-proof my shop as much as possible, but I also realize that it's impossible to know 100% what I'll ever need/want. I'm also hoping to get some shipping and/or bulk discount from Felder if possible.
Do you feel that adding an AF-16 or AF-22 dust extractor to my order would achieve what I'm looking for? It's not impossible that I'll get a WB sander, but much, much less likely than dual drum.? Thanks again, Kyle |
Re: One dust collector to rule them all?
My workshop is 600sqft. I had a 1100mm dual head wide belt sander in my workshop as well as T/P combo, bandsaw, shaper, panel saw and mortiser.?
RL160 is too small to handle any sander. my WB sander required 7000m3/hr of extraction, my extraction at the time couldnt handle it (only 4kw) I solved this by placing the sander right next to the extractor.? my current extractor is a 7.5kw baghouse unit by Nederman, if you want a RL, to rule them all, you need at least 250 or 300.? |
Re: One dust collector to rule them all?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýKyle, ? Like Jim, few other RL owners have shared the same experience here on FOG. I am not certain if anyone with pneumatic cleaning feature has shared the same outcome. It would be good to hear from someone who has used a drum sander or WBS with a RL160 with auto cleaning. Also, Felder added antistatic filters, may be 3 yrs ago. They are really meant for plastic, PVC and composites among other materials but the reading I did couple of yrs back (before ordering a new filter) suggested that they can help with wood as well. A filter that does not retain any charge is more likely to release fine dust than one that is not static-dissipative. Finally, the price difference was not substantial so I went with it. I would speak with Jesse at Felder to learn more about your situation unless someone here can post first-hand experience. ? Sidebar: Based upon what I read here and the fact that I do not have auto clean on RL125, I kept the old cyclone just for the WBS after acquiring the RL125. I was getting good dust collection with RL but whenever I looked up into the filter I found it¡¯s pleats full of fine dust and chips. I talked to Jesse at AWFS last year and he told me that frequent cleaning goes a long way to keep the filter clean. I added a timer (with buzzer) in my shop that runs when RL is running to help me remember to clean often. It has been over a yr and every time I have looked, the filters have no chips or dust in them to speak of. This experience is with antistatic filter and even though I do not know for sure, I imagine that ther would be improvement with standard filters as well. I shared timer details here and a write up is in the files section. This is not to say that you should plan to use your RL with the drum sander. Check with Jesse. If you do go with RL, make sure they come with antistatic filters. ? Imran Malik ? ? From: [email protected] On Behalf Of Jim Fleming

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMark, you might enjoy this sequence - it took considerable planning: ?https://flic.kr/s/aHskFDYt4aI also have a remote control for raising/lowering the mast so I can hoist myself up to change lightbulbs, etc. ?When I was in SFO, I had a cherry-picker-like basket for the stacker and installed all the 20' AFF shop lighting that way. And of course, it always helps to wait until it rains to move equipment into the shop. ?LOL David Best DBestWorkshop@... https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidpbest/collections/ https://www.youtube.com/@David_Best

Re: One dust collector to rule them all?
I have no experience with the RL collectors, but have had numerous cyclones, all leading up to the current 15hp Oneida. I had a 16", then 37", now 43" widebelt. I had the Clearvue CV Max, and it didn't like sanders either. The filter clogged so rapidly and then would loose suction. Because the pleats are so tight, it was difficult to clean. Less of a problem with the Oneida collectors.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYea, pallet fork has been pretty abused as well. ?I bought mine at AirGas for about $400 in 2001, and while it¡¯s not the super-industrial version like yours, it has been the second-most reliable piece of equipment in my shop (right behind the Phase Perfect). ?I¡¯ve done absolutely nothing to it maintenance wise in 21 years of service. ?I also have this battery-powered stacker, which has been extremely helpful over the years too. ?
