Re: Boom Arm progress

On the boom arm at my shop, I used flange bearings where the bearings can swivel inside the flange.? While although it worked perfectly on my boom arm, I could not get it to function properly on Joel's Boom arm.? The bearings in the flanges moved and shifted and just did not want to stay aligned and parallel with each other, so I came up with the long bolt thru 2 bronze flange bearings that I inserted thru a very tight drilled and fitted hole, but once again, the sag showed up after mounting.? Mounting these boom arms and getting them not to sag or stay in alignment seems to be the main issue we are having with the build..While I know the more technical advanced folks here can come up with a fail safe way to do this, our goal is for these to be easily made by others who are not as mechanically savvy and can easily make this boom arm at their home shop

The boom arm with the wood mid-pivot is now functional. ?Enclosed is a picture of it as the cords were being run. ?There are 2 issues. ?The first section has a bit of a twist, and so I think that should be a bit more rigid. ?The second section is fine as it never has twisting forces applied. ?One problem is sag at the level of the mounting bracket both with the initial bearings and a different approach as shown in the picture. ?One option would be to make the boom arm taller at the area of the mounting bracket and have a longer bolt-rod. ?However, I think what would be most useful, perhaps in addition, is to identify a mounting bracket that can be purchased for this purpose that is better than holes through an angle bracket. ?As for the boom arm itself, having the flange bearing-bushing on both ends, that seems to work. ?I just think there should be a better way to secure the rod from above and below those flange bearings-bushings.

This Boom Arm works perfectly well, and I am happy about that, but to post plans for others to use to make one, I want something better and more reliable. ?Randy got the mount to work on his, but the same one did not work so well on mine, and reproducibility would be a nice thing. ?

Any links to a product to consider would be greatly appreciated.
