If your doing thick lumber edging a very excellent set up is a Hess press, Holzer top / bottom copy heads with feeder and a stroke sander.
I have a old German Alder for 30 years I use for finish work and fairly rough construction trimming at times 240 volt.

Some skills are developed quickly and some are continually being revised. The unfortunate part is there are too many people that think they have the skill after purchasing expensive tools and equipment. Both edge planers are extremely effective if put in the right hands and both can produce disastrous?results from those that haven't learned the skill to use them. The difference is the Lamello is a one trick pony extremely useful when doing wider edging in wood. If I did this type of edging I would own one. The MFK, in one of its 4 configurations, for me is the goto trimming machine for edgebanding of thickness upto 1/2" in a mulitude of materials. I typicaly don't use edgebanding wider than 1/4".
I had a couple of lipping planers when I had my business i did a lot of custom veneered panels with solid edging, they work pretty well but can be a bit tricky going around say a mitered or butted corner. In the end i found it difficult to get it flush every time without nipping the face of the panel here and there, and with employees it became even more inconsistent. I ended up using a stroke sander which aside from a really expensive wide belt with a segmented pad and a bunch of gizmos ?is the best weapon imho, but does require skill. Now I just get the thickness pretty darn close and take a swipe or 2 with a hand plane

Seems like the workpiece would have to be perfectly flat for this to work. Since edging is commonly applied to plywood, I am suspect of it¡¯s effectiveness consistently.
