Does anybody have one of these? Any comments? Useful? Lipping planer easier to use? Thanks, Dave

Seems like the workpiece would have to be perfectly flat for this to work. Since edging is commonly applied to plywood, I am suspect of it’s effectiveness consistently.

David,
?
I assume you do not have MFK700, supposedly the go to tool for flush trimming. I have one but have not used it yet. One of those good deal buy.

I had a couple of lipping planers when I had my business i did a lot of custom veneered panels with solid edging, they work pretty well but can be a bit tricky going around say a mitered or butted corner. In the end i found it difficult to get it flush every time without nipping the face of the panel here and there, and with employees it became even more inconsistent. I ended up using a stroke sander which aside from a really expensive wide belt with a segmented pad and a bunch of gizmos ?is the best weapon imho, but does require skill. Now I just get the thickness pretty darn close and take a swipe or 2 with a hand plane Regards, Mark

Also as far as my comments on the wide belt, i am certainly no expert my only experience is 20ish years ago with a custom made 600k wide belt which could sand for example a 2”wide maple edge against a field of Sapele to perfection, maybe there are lower cost widebelts now? Regards, Mark

David, The lamello looks pretty sweet, much better than the virutex lipping planers which was kinda clunky and heavy, I don’t think they were available when I had my biz and I don’t think they are made anymore - might have to reconsider my options, zero space for even a small stroke sander.. Mark there aren't to many tools I've found that don't take a certain skill set to use them effectively.
The multiple discussions here weekly show this point.
Some skills are developed quickly and some are continually being revised. The unfortunate part is there are too many people that think they have the skill after purchasing expensive tools and equipment. Both edge planers are extremely effective if put in the right hands and both can produce disastrous?results from those that haven't learned the skill to use them. The difference is the Lamello is a one trick pony extremely useful when doing wider edging in wood. If I did this type of edging I would own one. The MFK, in one of its 4 configurations, for me is the goto trimming machine for edgebanding of thickness upto 1/2" in a mulitude of materials. I typicaly don't use edgebanding wider than 1/4".

John, totally true - takes a lot of skill and finesse to level a 2” wide piece of maple without blowing through the veneer field . I think there were like 2-3 trusted guys out of 40 that could do it wit consistent good results.
I had been looking at the mft but was somehow under the impression that it was spendy for what you got, can you flush trim 19mm edge on the top like shown on these tables?

If your doing thick lumber edging a very excellent set up is a Hess press, Holzer top / bottom copy heads with feeder and a stroke sander. I have a old German Alder for 30 years I use for finish work and fairly rough construction trimming at times 240 volt. Designing and building for 47 years

Wow, an $1800 tool they sell for $3240 just because it is discontinued by Lamello.
It was CAD $1850 in 2016. It was actually cheaper buying Cantex in Canada than states (US$ 1800) back then.? I almost pulled the trigger.
Now, if I need to trim the solid wood edge banding, I use Festool OF1400 with Freud 1 1/4" dish carving bit (1/2" shank) and 1/2" MDF base based on the technique demoed in this video?, I get the perfect result, the only downside is QF1400 is too big.
I also have MKF 700, bought a 25 mm diameter router bit with 8mm shank a month ago, will try it.
Paul Marcel modified the horizontal base to extend the capacity of MFK700, so he could use a longer bit for trimming edge banding.?
? ??
?
If Festool makes a lipping planer like Lamello Cantex and sells it at a reasonable price, I will probably buy it :)

I have the OF1010 and the base which facilitates edge trimming. I just picked up a Whiteside 1/4" downcut spiral with double end bearing. I need to flush trim a 3/16" piece of maple to a sheet of melamine. I've read the bearings aren't required with the Festool accessories, but figured it was a good insurance policy. I'll follow up with the results of my experience.

I have that base and 1/4” bit you have. It did not work well when I used it to trim 3/4” hard maple edge banding, difficult to operate.?
Lamello Cantex is really the best tool to trim edge banding. Lamello just priced it too high, they killed this remarkable single purpose tool.

The OF1010 setup works reasonable if the material is completely flat which is now rare with plywood. One little slip and you're screwed. In my situation the MFK with 1.5 degree base is still the fastest and most productive. James be careful with the Paul Marcel mod, if memory serves me right it was for a 3/4" bit. Still can't figure out the need or fascination with using a 3/4" piece of edgeing

The fascination with the 3/4” edge is on the table edges i do with a 30bevel after flush. For cabinets I like max 3mm Regards, Mark

I have OF1010 too. The 25mm diameter bit is less than 1 mm than the opening of the MFK700 base, kind of scary. I might just use it on OF1010.
James James, I have the 1010 and the sell a plate and guide for it I might try that, i have the 1400 as well and use the 1010 much more its a nice size balance Regards, Mark ?

If Festool makes a lipping planer like Lamello Cantex and sells it at a reasonable price, I will probably buy it :)

David,

I assume you do not have MFK700, supposedly the go to tool for flush trimming. I have one but have not used it yet. One of those good deal buy.

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully I have better luck given that melamine is generally flat and the edge banding is thin. I have no idea how often I will edge band plywood in the future, so I didn’t want to commit to an expensive?discontinued tool, despite it’s amazing reputation.?

I have that base and 1/4” bit you have. It did not work well when I used it to trim 3/4” hard maple edge banding, difficult to operate.?
Lamello Cantex is really the best tool to trim edge banding. Lamello just priced it too high, they killed this remarkable single purpose tool.

The vortex 8mm shank spiral router bit cutting part is 1 inch long.
I have not have plan to modify the $200 base. To have better control, I still believe the tool should rest on the panel instead overhanging the edge of the panel.
