Comparing Zoom and Microsoft Teams 10 #technology
HI everybody, The comparison of Zoom and Bluejeans from a participant's & facilitator's perspectives was super-useful. Does anybody have experience with both Zoom and Microsoft Teams? I have a client whose IT department is saying that Microsoft Teams is more secure and therefore preferable. Thoughts? Experience? Thanks! Protecting Intellectual Property
I have a client who is dippin their toes into online training. They are very concerned with their intellectual property (having been burned by a former consultant and client). hey are interested in how people manage handouts with proprietary/branded content to protect their intellectual property from being stolen. From your perspective are they looking at the situation incorrectly? Thank you Elana

Learning Management Software? 13 #technology
Hi there - I did a scan of current topics and did not see this one addressed . . . but would be happy to be directed to an existing thread if I happened to miss it! Has anyone come across a side-by-side comparison of various Learning Management Software (LMS) platforms? And/or do you use a specific platform that you're really happy with? If so, would love if folks could share. We are exploring options to set up courses online and are feeling VERY overwhelmed with the number of options out there. Thanks in advance for any support! Does anyone prefer using Webex for virtual meetings? 3 #technology
Hi fellow facilitators, I apologize if I missed the post or link, but has anyone found they prefer Webex to zoom? If you do love Webex - what is it you love? A potential client is considering using it over zoom for a virtual conference (which may have 100-200 people) as she finds it more professional. I have access to Webex through a local government client (without breakout rooms) and found it less intuitive to zoom so have been promoting zoom for our meetings. However those meetings are all less than 25 people. Thanks for your thoughts on what makes Webex great...or better than zoom. And if you really prefer zoom, why? And again - if this post is already discussed, or someone has blogged about it, please share the link and I can follow up. Much appreciated, Michelle -- Michelle Laurie michellelaurie.com Strategy-Assessment-Engagement-Faciltation

Empathy-based collaborative sense-making...
Hi all, I'm super happy to be on this list, and have been spreading the word about it far and wide, including in a recent blog post I wrote for my sporadic blog on "The Listening Arts".... This is my first post here, though I've been reading a lot of what's been shared. I wanted to let folks know that there are still a few spaces left in our upcoming four-session learning journey on Dynamic Facilitation, an empathy and emergence-based collaborative sense-making approach that has been growing in Germany and Austria. This is our first time offering this workshop online, as a public offering. We have been madly prototyping away for the last six weeks, after a number of in-person workshops in Europe were cancelled due to COVID -- more deets on all that, in the blog post above. And so we are asking what we think is a very reasonable fee, for what is usually a two-day in-person workshop (now spread over four three-hour sessions.) Still, if you are interested and would need more flexibility regarding the fee, please let us know. *** I especially enjoy sharing the listening-based Dynamic Facilitation approach with facilitators who have a background in Compassionate Listening, or in Non-Violent Communication, or in Playback Theater... also with people who have a background in mediation, especially the work of the Center for Understanding in Conflict, as we work a lot with what they term "looping". Yet while helpful, none of that is a pre-requisite. The core of our outreach, and most of the folks who have signed up thus far, are facilitators who work in the context of public engagement, facilitating CItizen's Assemblies. At the same time, this work is also quite useful in a business context -- here's an article published in OD Practitioner on those applications. *** Ok, that's it! I look forward to updating folks here, on our learnings from the workshop. We'll be using a combination of Mural and Zoom, two tools I've worked with in the past and really love. From all the prototyping we've done thus far, the main take-away is that yes, online DF is different than the in-person experience, AND, it is still very worthwhile! with all best wishes, Rosa Rosa Zubizarreta DiaPraxis: Awakening the Spirit of Creative Collaboration coaching in participatory leadership ? advanced group facilitation services & learning opportunities

Question about Fees #fees
For those of you who charge for your services, could you share standard acceptable rates for online facilitation. They seem to be all over the place and I was wondering what the standard fee is. Thanks, Elana

Has anyone got experience of Digital Samba/ Samba Live? 3
Hi all, Our challenge: My team in the National Health Service in England is hosting an increasing number of large virtual community meetings that are part of the response to Covid-19 across the NHS in England. For instance, we run virtual meetings for people across the country who support the wellbeing of our 1.4 million employees during the Covid pandemic and also for the community of scientists who are identifying novel solutions to the challenges of testing at scale. Our organisation favours MS Teams (and we love Teams!) but our current platform of choice for large virtual gatherings is Zoom. That's because we need breakout rooms to be able to facilitate large group sessions interactively and Zoom is the only platform that we have found does that reliably at the scale we need. The problem we have is that a number of NHS organisations have firewalled Zoom. We are seeking any alternatives to Zoom that work reliably with 500+ participants. We have found the people in this group to be very helpful, so thank you for all the wisdom you have given to us so far. We have reviewed a number of platforms and we are going to have a whole team test of Digital Samba/Samba Live tomorrow. I did a search for Samba in the messages in this group and got zero mentions. Is anyone using this platform? Has anyone got any practical experience of it, pros & cons? Is anyone in a similar situation to us and could recommend a different platform? Thanks in advance. Zoom Breakouts with "the law of two feet" 28
Hey everyone, Wanted to share something I learned yesterday which has opened up my use of Zoom breakouts. I¡¯m helping my church to function on-line through a variety of different group settings, but I was asked ¡°is there any way we can recreate the informal times we have together after the service ¨C when people just cluster and chat in different parts of the building/carpark/Starbucks nearby¡¡± Orchestrating that via breakouts for 100 people is a challenge ¨C and who gets to decide where you put everyone? If you do it randomly, you can end up with some socially awkward situations.? All in all, a bit of an unnatural way to recreate an ad-hoc, spontaneous, self-determining process analogous to Open Space. Or so I thought¡. ¡but it looks like there is a solution! As you all know ¨C as a meeting host or co-host, you can move freely between breakout groups. So the trick is ¨C as people join the meeting, make them co-hosts [assuming that you know and trust them!]. Create a set of breakout rooms with memorable names. In my case: Coffee Area, Tea Area, Quiet Zone, Car Park, Starbucks, Parents¡¯ room etc. Also create a ¡®lobby¡¯ breakout room. As people arrive in the main Zoom space, welcome them give them co-host power and assign them to the lobby. From there, they can look at all of the other meeting room spaces, see who is in them, and join and leave them at will. The law of two feet in action¡ As people get more familiar with the room names, they will pre-arrange where to meet. ¡°See you in the car park after the meeting!¡±. It¡¯s still far from perfect, but so much better than a bit of Facebook banter and a YouTube service¡ Chris

Is anybody using Zoom language interpretation? 5 #technology
I can't find the settings described in this Zoom help page. Does anybody have a clue as to whether Zoom's Language Interpretation features only work for some accounts or might have possibly deisappeared? https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360034919791 I've hunted around and can't find how to make this work or enable it. Online conference example: DockerCon
I thought this was interesting enough to share with the group. This is an IT-related conference revolving around Docker, which is a widely-used free/commercial computer server virtualization product. Usually, they have in-person conferences, but obviously a conference now would have to be online. Here, you can see how it's shaping up, on Cube365's platform, 27 days out. Physicality is expensive. I'm sure this online conference is not cheap, but it's cheap enough that Docker has seen fit to make this 1-day online conference free for attendees. Which is something that would be impractical for a in-person conference (not to mention associated costs to attendees of travel, meals, and lodging). Today (April 30): A Zoom Fly-Over of a Live Open Space Event with 200+ Participants
Hi All, I am an open space facilitator and a software engineer. I built QiqoChat to help facilitators host events online. I'm specifically looking to help facilitators who want to bring new tools to their existing clients. I hope a bunch of folks can join this informal event today ¡ª it's a Zoom "fly-over" of a live Open Space event with 200+ participants as the event enters Day 3. Credit for the design of this event goes to Heidi Nobantu Saul (cc'd) who has been facilitating this event in-person for many years. It's the most innovative event I've seen on QiqoChat in five years. 1-2 weeks from now we'll host a Zoom interview for her to share her lessons learned. Time: 10am Pacific / 1pm Eastern / 5pm UTC You are invited to RSVP and/or participate here. Here¡¯s a screenshot of Google Analytics during the event from yesterday. In the bottom-right, you can see that there are 301 people on the site, 212 in that specific open space event, and about 115 on Zoom video at that moment. During this fly-over I will show what an event looks like as people are moving through the space and taking notes; we won't join their Zoom sessions. Please bring your questions and suggestions, See you then! Lucas Cioffi Lead Software Engineer, QiqoChat.com Scarsdale, NY 917-528-1831

Zoom Audio transcripts? 2
Hello! So I see that there is an audio transcript option available and I turned it on. (I think this may just be for business/professional accounts). However, the recording came back saying ¡°unable to transcribe transcript¡±. My recording was in Spanish. Might this be the issue? I am not seeing anything about this in the Zoom support/help information. Thanks!! Interview recording - Keeping myself visible? 6
Hello! I am in the process of doing short interviews via zoom with grantees for a Foundation board meeting final evaluation (A positive, I don¡¯t think they would have been so open to these interviews pre-Covid). Anyway, I did the first today, I can turn off my video and just have the interviewees appear for the recording, but then they can¡¯t see me, read my facial expressions and encouragement, all of which really helps during interviews. Is there anyway of keeping myself visible, but not recorded??? Thanks!! Session Lab Survey results on effects of COVID-19 on facilitators 2

Partnership for mutual aid groups 6
Hi everyone, the initiative I'm running -- COVID Resource Librarian -- is looking to partner with existing mutual aid groups that want to make their resource directories more easily accessible to people who, for whatever reason, may be overwhelmed by personally sorting through the wealth of spreadsheets, google docs, and facebook posts in search of help. We'd like to work with a few mutual aid groups to roll out the tool so that we can get a sense of current needs and build out our service accordingly. The partnership is simple: you would integrate our chat feature into your social media and website via link or embedded chat & our volunteers would be on deck to handle information queries by quickly looking through resource directories and, when appropriate, referring people to request assistance directly from you. Contact me to discuss further!

Simultaneous fish bowls? 3
Hi! I¡¯m thinking about a session tomorrow where I¡¯d like to do two (or three) simultaneous fishbowls with a group of about 25 - I¡¯m wondering if anyone has tried this? I¡¯m thinking that I could prime another two facilitators beforehand, and then I guess have everyone come back and have the fish do their final reflections in the larger group? Has anyone tried this? If so any tips? (My alternative would be to do two, one after the other, and just have the participants break up, with the fish only in one of the groups, after describing the initial context/challenge). Hmm.. Let's Break Jitsi -- testing an alternative to Zoom breakouts
Hi All, It sounds like a few people are interested in testing how many people Jitsi can hold in a single video chat. I set up a quick test, embedding Jitsi into one event on QiqChat. What: Meet a bunch of people on this email list during a fun and informal 15-minute test When: Monday (tomorrow) 9:30am Pacific / 12:30pm Eastern / 4:30pm UTC. Please RSVP here and download the Chrome browser if you do not have it already. Jitsi is an open source alternative to Zoom that works in Chrome, and it will hopefully work in other browsers in the months ahead.
