Boy, after reading this post after all these years, I sure could have done a better job explaining just what I did. Sorry about that.
The wiring notes I have on that post refer to what circuits are available at the 2 tail light connectors.

Ignition switches

Seems timely subject for me the ¡°how to hot wire the ignition switch¡±

My question is ¡°does one need to be pressing the key hard while rotating to the start positon¡±.

Seems mine is getting harder to hot the spot were the starter will engage.

So I¡¯m looking for a replacement switch and will do jump in the mean time as a back up.?

Thanks

Re: Wiring for trailer #electrical

David,?
? ? ? Thanks - I actually found this post and printed your file (trailer wiring) - I followed it pretty much exactly?- did have one question though. You say about the 7 pin connector? that you used all the connections. on pin 3 and pin 4 (left turn tail and turn - you say "via 5-pin". Does that mean you connected to the wires on the 5 -pin or did you still connect on the 7 - pin?

Thanks in advance
Ian

Janet - not sure you would see my post with measurements, because I added "measurements" to the title. So just letting you know.

Thanks - positive it is!

Re: House battery disconnect - which side?

I would put the disconnect on the positive side.?That way there is no positive voltage in any of your house wiring. You may find my post helpful about installing a disconnect:?

Technically, it never matters which side you disconnect.? The reason for disconnecting ground is that if a wire happens to get away from you, there won't be any sparks if it touches something else.? The same would apply on a positive ground system, though those are rare now days.

House battery disconnect - which side?

I want to add an easily accessible house battery disconnect switch at the back of the van. Question: which side of the battery should I put the disconnect? (plus or minus?)

When disconnecting the starting battery to work on a car, you always disconnect the negative (ground0 side for safety reasons. would it be the same for the house, or does it matter, or...?

Re: Open hatch from inside - Measurements

See attached pic.

As for the wire rod/pull button I mentioned - I was thinking of using a wire instead i.e. a mountain bike brake cable going to the top to some sort of knob...Could use some brake cable sheathing to keep it from flopping/shaffing in there...

janet muccino

Measurements would be helpful thx

Re: Open hatch from inside

If you want measurements I can do that quickly. Hopefully all vans are the same!

Re: Open hatch from inside

I don't have a pic, but if I remember correctly the wiper motor is way off to-the right side (passenger of the liftgate. My bad - should have taken a pic. The wiper linkage is still in the middle tho.But a shaft bend to the left might do it...

Re: Open hatch from inside

Sounds like a great alternate location¡.. but that wiper motor may be a problem if it went straight up¡.

And agree is the bed is made up or stuff stacked at the back it is hard to get your finger in there.

I always thought there was a lever for that purpose and mine was just missing?

When i was fixing my rear latch issue lately I noticed there is a spare unused rod connection on the upper side of the rear latch mechanism (see attached pic) that could be used to open the liftgate.

Has anyone ever added a rod + push/pull knob to the liftgate (like the front doors), from the latch mechanism going up to the lower window lip on the rear liftgate? Seems easy but likely has some gotchas...

tips on replacing rack and pinion assembly?

My 97 EVC with 230K recently developed a serious leak from the rack and pinion assembly. Anyone have tips on removal/replacement? Bentley's suggests that both the sway bar and exhaust need to be removed to get at it on a 97, but doesn't mention the exhaust removal on a 95 (5 cylinder). A casual look at it appears to show that there is a surprising amount of clearance down there and that you should be able to remove/replace it without taking out the exhaust - which would be nice since those 6 bolts up at the manifold are a bear to get off.? Any thoughts?

Re: advice and parts for 2003 EV MV WE

Thanks, Mike - appreciate the parts source. I will order today. I¡¯m definitely not the type to take the car apart - whenever I take things apart there are always bits leftover when I put the item back together. But I appreciate knowing how it¡¯s done!
How do you know which engine version you have?
Thanks again!

Re: Wiring for trailer #electrical

Thanks Sam - the wiring harness I have connected is a converter that is drawing its power from the house battery in the back.

Re: EVC rear hatch (Liftgate) latch operation has "reversed" - Fixed

FIxed.

First to clarify, I wasn't using the keys to test this - just using the front passenger door pull knob to open and close the doors. The rear hatch was definitely 'reversed' compared to the door - so it is possible for this to happen.

My fix: pulled out electric door lock module and opened it up. I cleaned all the gold tracks/contacts inside with contact cleaner. I also scraped dark residue and cleaned off the connector pins with contact cleaner. One was especially oxidized. I put it back in and it is working properly. So as far as i can see, something in all these connections was not making proper contact - and possibly the vibration of the mechanism when opening / closing was inducing connectivity issues and thus improper sequence of operation.
