T4 Paradise (in Sweden this time)
My brother was in Sweden in April, where he competed in the Masters World
Championships in cross country skiing. One of the perks he got from his sponsors, etc., was the use of a EuroVan, evidently a Caravelle, for a few days. I drooled with envy as he spoke about how well it handled in the ice and snow as well as on clean roads. He really appreciated the heated seats, except that he was on the road when he found that he didn't know how to control the temperature. He eventually figured it out. He loved the EV, and has a new respect for my love affair with the EVC. Bill Armstrong, EVC Speculator Endwell, NY '71 Econoline (home brew camper (54K Mi)) |
A Small Victory in Iowa (Fuel Line)
I'm happy to report that I had the fuel line work related to
campaign "UN" done yesterday. This, not without much cajoling and work on my part, is in a way a victory for all of us. Many thanks to all for their input on this thread, including those who pushed me to get the work done. Visions of 'what could happen' are a great motivator. I must admit, however, that the last laugh was probably VW's. I didn't get away from the dealer without an oil change, three pounds of freon and a replacement serpentine belt. C'est la vie/so ist es im Leben. Scott 93 GL auto 52K miles (and according to a recent post, good for another 140,000 at least!) |
Re: VW Parts CD
Michael G. McCarthy
This CD is a complete VW and Audi CD. ?It has a pretty thorough parts list for ALL models from the 70's through 2001.

There is some idiosyncratic stuff on this disc though. ?For example, I've looked up parts on 1999 and 2000 EVs and the CD will return a "no part number available" message. ?However, I can find the SAME part on the '93 and then get the correct part number (and I'm talking about the exact same part, like a particular bolt that is obviously identical on all EV's from '92 to present). The CD also has some pretty decent navigation tools and a nice bookmark feature (too bad the bookmark feature does not work across the ENTIRE disc -- you need to be within a particular model to see the bookmarks for that model). You also can assemble and printout parts lists. ?Today I'm going to try printing out a short list of parts that I'm sure will have to be special ordered and then fax them to the parts guy Jack at my local VW dealer. ?Hopefully he will order the parts without my having to drive in and order the parts over-the-counter. One other thing, the CD is pretty fast. ?I have slow old PC that only supports the big screen you need for this CD to work (1280x1024) in 256 colors (which is fine for the CD) -- I don't have a real fast CD player either -- and still the whole process of working the disc is pretty fast. You can also see which parts are discontinued as they are greyed out in the menus. (BTW, you DON'T need to actually burn a CD to make this thing work. ?You can install the whole thing on your harddrive and it will work the same, and even a bit faster. ?An intallation using a CD requires about 50MB of disk space for files that MUST be installed on the harddrive anyway. ?An installation using the harddrive only requires about 410MB total for the installation. ?So, if you have an extra 360mb of harddrive space, it might not be worth the hassle of burning a CD at all.) Did you happen to see what size and make of tires the 2000???I stopped by an RV dealer near Beaumont, TX to inspect some Rialtas, both 2000 and leftover 1999. The rear tire size was 215/70R15 on both, and was Continental LS23C on the 1999. I have 215/70R15 Continental LS23C's on my '93 EV MV front and rear which work great - no clearance problems. The front tire size of the Rialtas was smaller, 195/70R15 I think. Humphrey |

Changing Bulbs
James H. McCarthy
Last night I changed a bulb in the rear of my '95EVC. Fortunately it was a
bulb on the right side, and access was easy because the well behind/in front of it has the auxiliary battery. But as I contemplated a future need to change on on the left, I was stumped on how to access the left rear bulbs. Has anyone figured out how to do this? The booklet for the EV shows easy access, but the EVC has water intake, and fuse panel blocking things. Any suggestions? I'd be more than willing to pay for this CD if they were made available
through the group! Having struggled through vacant stares from parts/service personnel (even at VW shops!) on behalf of my 88 Vanagon, this would be well worth your suggested price. I recently bought a '93 ev mv and know I will be facing a new learning curve. This CD would be an answer to prayer! Please let me know when you can do this and what you need... Kirk |

That's a great idea. I'd be willing to burn some CD's for others in return for one of the CD's if the CD covers the '97 model parts (the original post didn't specify which model years are covered by the CD). A distribution tree would be a very logical way to distribute copies among members of this group. I should think it would be a handy reference to have for EV owners. Those of us with access to CD burners burn a few copies for distribution to a few others? It's been working great for music for years, and I'll bet enough of us have burner access that everyone else doesn't have to deal with a 300MB download. Blanks and postage would be the only charge of course. (Or I'll just wait until I get back into the office and use the big pipe there!) Wow! This thing works! You download the file, decompress it using the Winimage program, and then burn a CD from the resulting directory of files. (I burned my CD on a Mac, even though it's a PC disk. Just make sure you burn an ISO disk.) Then, you use the CD to install the program to your PC just like any other program and viola!, you have the SAME screen on your PC that the VW dealer's parts counter guy has. This is just too cool. Now you can get ALL the part numbers, and all the exploded diagrams. True, the 1280x1024 resolution is a hassle, but you can zoom when necessary. This works. No more looking for microfiche on eBay. Subject: [ev_update] Re: VW Parts CD Date: Mon, May 22, 2000, 4:41 PM I belong to the vanagon group too and have downloaded this CD. BE FOREWARNED... it requires 1280 resolution on your monitor and is in iso format (Adaptec CDR). You can download winimage from the same site and extract it (with winimage, once downloaded) and then burn it to CD. I had varied success getting it to work but eventually got it to work. It takes some tinkering with if your running NT. 95/98 ran it ok but I did experience some problems. It might work just fine for you and it might not and require some tinkering time. If you download one of the FTP programs they will resume the downloading if you get cut off while downloading. That is the best way to go. there is little documentation supporting the use of all the methods and programs involved in this process. You should be fairly competent in using the PC. I do not recomend using the iso format to burn it to CD. Date mentioned of 7/29-30 weekend ...... Sounds like fun, but your dates conflict with another weekend gathering in North Carolina (following info previously posted to the newsgroup back in March): "The High Country Bus Festival - to celebrate all of generations of the VW Transporter. Last year the oldest bus was a 58 camper and everything in between up to Vanagons and EVC's. We had over 70 buses in attendance last year which was quite a site crusing through the mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is held the last weekend of July each summer, so this year's is July 28-30." Complete info on the above gathering can be found at Perhaps you might want to consider moving your weekend date up or back a week to avoid the conflict if possible. Some folks may even consider hitting both events during their summer vacation travels.. Sheldon '97 EVC ----- Original Message -----

Re: EVC 97 VR6 - Engine Problem
Donald Gibbons
Actually your VR6 engine has 2 chains, a short one that goes from the
crank to a secondary shaft and then a longer one that goes from the shaft to the two cams. Each chain does have an hydraulic tensioning device that runs off engine oil. More or less it is a good system but not as simple as the 5 cylinder engines cam belt. It is also possible that one of the hydraulic cam followers has failed and lets its valve make lots of noise. That would be simple to fix. Other then that its more serious internal engine parts. I hope you have a warrenty left. |
Re: are newer EV T4 chassis still
Eckhard,
These pictures of the T5 look serious to me. It looks like VW is changing the platform and setting their aim more directly at the mainstream mini-van market. From the photos this looks a bit smaller than the T4 and more like the size of the Honda Odyssey. Ron |
