Re: Need a right front signal light

Norman Leong

Does anyone know of a junked EV or a used EV parts source? I need a front
right turn signal lamp assembly for my 93 EV. The original one flew off the
van just outside St. Louis on a cross country trip this summer and we had to
pay $79 for the assembly and $8 for the bulb socket in Cleveland.

Well, the new (2 months old) one flew off today and was destroyed (aaarrg),
Todd,

No source for affordable used parts (Campbell-Nelson in Seattle, maybe?), but why does your right front lamp assembly keep flying off?...

Re: keyless entry

Norman Leong

I would like to install a keyless entry system in my 93 EV. I have an
after market alarm with this feature, but the people who installed it
don't know how to hook it up. They are only familiar with the US type
system where you push a button inside the driver's door to unlock all
the doors. They think I need an interface. Has anyone done this? When
I push the button on the remote the wire that is supposed to activate
the locks (part of the alarm) gets a short burst of a few volts.
Any suggestions?
Eckhard,

It sounds like you need a power door lock solenoid (the part that actually makes the lock knob thingee go up and down)...hey, wait a minute, you already have the power package on your EV, right? Hmmm, I would think that a wire needs to run to the solenoid/actuator for when you turn on/off the alarm. 'Sorry to be so vague, but I have the factory keyless entry system, which plugs right into a connector under the glovebox. Works great; only about $225, well six years ago anyway..

Re: Norcold fixed - I hope

I received the Norcold high altitude upgrade kit free from a local
Volks dealer (Gebhardt) in Boulder. The local dealer needed my Norcold
model, serial number and the VIN of the van before they would order it
for me. I had an RV shop (Boulder RV) install it for about $160. They
charged me 2.5 hours for labor. It now seems to work pretty reliably.
We will be at higher elevations (9,000+) in a couple weeks and will let
people know how it performs, if there is interest. So far, so good -- a
definite improvement in starting it up and it seems to really cool now.
Feel free to email me directly with any questions at
gkakatsakis@....

Larry -

Funny...that's one of the problems I had with mine that Lodgemobile
fixed.
I wonder how many Norcold units out there have loose thermocouplers.
Ever since they fixed mine - it's been perfect - it lights right up
and runs
cold at all elevations.
Labor Day weekend I was on four day camping trip up at Seqouia and the
Shaver Lake area...
Camped at 7-8,000 feet with no Norcold problems!
Did you get yours back yet?

I took my 99 EVC to Lodgemobile in Burbank, CA today to have them fix
the Norcold which would not light on propane. The problem was a
loose
thermocouple which they tightened. That seems to have fixed my
problem.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and support I received from this
list.

Same experience, same solution, then it went away of its own accord.

And if need be you can get this addressed at a normal VW dealer--it has

Steve,

I had the same problem with my driver's side window. My dealer tried to
reset the electronics but wound up replacing the entire mechanism in the
door, under warranty, which solved the problem. I still find the both
windows are prone to reversing at full height on occasion when they are
left
in a open position in the garage for several days (when the EVC isn't
used).
Apparantly the weatherstripping at the top expands (relaxes) a llittle
when
the window isn't in contact with it to cause just enough resistance to
activate the auto-reversing safety mechanism. After the window is left in
a
closed position for a bit, it again works fine.

The added safety of the reversing feature is probably worth a little
inconvenience on occasion (unless of course you get caught in a sudden
rainstorm deluge ;-). An easy way to overcome that occasional problem is
to stop the window just short of full closed position, then bring it up in
small increments manually (not allowing the one-touch auto-full-up
operation
to activate).

All of a sudden I'm having a problem with the passenger window of my

reverses and goes all the way down.
The only way I can stop it from opening again is to try and catch the
window just when it hits the top and pull the switch.
Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Mirror Accident

Robert & Yvonne

Hi, my wife did the same thing only with a little more damage to the guts of
the mirror motor mechanism. If yours is the same as the '93 models you may
be able to push flatly on the face of the mirror and 'seat' the motor
assembly back into the mirror housing. As I recall it has some clips or
catches that hold it in and it sounds like you flexed the housing enough to
allow these catches to release. You may be able to see behind the mirror
and get an idea of what I am referring to and if it looks loose, go for it.
Be careful of pushing hard enough to break the glass and possibly cutting
yourself. Good luck!

Re: problem with automatic windows

Gary Clendening

Hi,

We had the same window closing difficulty. On the same day I brought in
mine, another '97 was there for the same difficulty. Thompson VW in
Waterville replace the sensor mechanism and it worked fine since...this was
a warrantee job. My driver's window suffers from same ailment but it is no
longer on warrantee so I'll have to find a certain solution. Last spring,
when we were in the dry desert the symptom showed up but disappeared when
the rains came in Las Vegas. I've tried treating the plastic with Armor-all
to soften it and maybe give some lubrication to the closing. Some times it
closes, most of the time it does not. We have huge amounts of rain
now...maybe that will lubricate the thing enough.

Will tell about the major body repair next note. It looks good enough to go
to Buses Around the Buoy in Kennebunkport this weekend...got my Michelin's
mounted yesterday, too. Next, find a place to give me one of those $69
alignments.

Sorry Russ, I forget that not everyone has been in on the previous discussions
regarding disabling the ..feature.. of having the headlights come on with the
ignition. This is on the "99. By opening the connector this feature is
eliminated. I did wire tie the two ends together in case anybody in the future
wanted to rehook things up. Same thing for the yellow connector with the other
yellow wire. Disconnecting it will stop the annoying dinging that occurs when
you leave a key in the ignition. While we are on the subject, you can also open
the little case on the floor in front of the passenger seat, unplug the plug,
jumper sockets 5 & 6 (I believe, I will have to check mine to be sure) with a
spade plug with each tip turned 90 degrees from the original in order to allow
starting of the engine when the seat is reversed (don't plug the plug back in,
just let it dangle inside).

Well, the new (2 months old) one flew off today and was destroyed (aaarrg),
and I really don't want to fork out the dough for another new one. Camelback
VW in Phoenix will ship me one for $49.00 plus $5.00 freight, but if I can
find a good used one, I'd just as soon do that. BTW, our FLVWD in Fort
Collins, Colo., wanted $79 for the assembly. I called Camelback, told them I
was a member of this list and from out of state, and bing; the price dropped
from VW's list to $49. Great source. I tried the Bus Depot's site, but no
listing for the light, even with the VW part number.

I'm seriously considering ordering the "Honk if anything falls off" VW bumper
sticker from the Volks Motorworks home page. . .

TIA for any help

Re: problem with automatic windows

I, too, am having trouble with this window. I manage to close the window at
this time by stopping it on the way up about three times and then it usually
closes. For those of you who appreciate your home distance from the VW
dealer who sells and services the EVC, I confess there is no dealer in the
entire state of Rhode Island. Okay, so Rhode Island is only 48 miles in
length and less in width unless you include the Narragansett Bay, but I never
did trust floating a VW. Anyway, the VW service personnel that I trust are
North Attleboro, Massachusetts which is a mere 30 miles or 60 mile round
trip. North Attleboro, however, will not touch anything that Winnebago
installed. Calling the service department (fortunately they have an 800
number) in Rochester, New Hampshire where I purchased the EVC, December 1996
has not been very satisfactory. No problems of this nature have been
referred to them, but I could drive the 300 mile round trip and they would
try to work on it. I'm working to establish a friendly relationship with my
local Winnebago dealer. For now, I'll park the EVC and prepare for Floyd.
I'm not looking forward to losing power to another hurricane. I'll miss my
e-mail from EV_update. Still I, too, would like to know if others have had
problems with this passenger window, if, and how they solved the problem.

Please note that per the Bentley the first step in aligning the Eurovan
is to adjust the front height by adjusting the torsion arms. This isn't
a normal alignment procedure and will be missed by mechanics not
familiar with Eurovan alignment.

The Alignment shop in Albuquerque did this as well for $69 total.

Update on EV/T4 Fire Research

I just sent an email to Frank Markmann in Germany, the author of
"Vehicle Fires in Germany", who I found doing a simple search on Alta
Vista. The particular site is:

I gave him the address of our discussion site, and asked him to respond
directly there.

The German Automobile Club, ADAC, is another source, but you must be a
member to surf their site.

Finally, the German Safety Organization, TUV, has a North American web
site and office. I sent an email inquiry there.

Hoping for some real data to get a fix on the extent of the problem...
