Fuel system issue
Havana, our '95 EVC with 140,000 miles, has some issues that are baffling even the superb mechanics at Independent Auto Works here in Corvallis. I must say that I am of the carburetor?generation?(I've owned three '69 VW buses in my life) and know nothing about injectors.? Thus my descriptions use archaic terminology!? Here are the scenarios and observations of the problems (presumably related):?? 1. Minor, but annoying.? Engine is at running temperature and you stop for groceries, viewpoint or gas for 1 to 15 minutes.? When you restart the engine the idle is rough and usually stalls within 30 seconds.? Restart again and pull onto the road- minimal power for about 30-60 seconds, crawl along at 20-30 mph until engine suddenly revs up and away you go.? It is like the choke was on and then it opened up. You just hold the gas pedal in place and wait for it to fix itself. 2. Flat curvy roads, speed limited areas and downhills.? Same symptoms as above if you leave her in Drive and let the RPM's drop below 2500.? The "choking" lasts for 1 to 3 minutes until she roars to life. I can usually prevent this by downshifting to 3rd or 2nd (automatic transmission) and keeping her above 3000 RPM, but what a waste of gas and wear and tear! She runs like a dream on the open highway/freeway for hours on end [sigh].?? We just?replaced the computer to no?avail although?it?seems to have fixed?the?stalling issue.? Sensors all seem to check out normal. Any thoughts or ideas?? ? Thanks In?advance, Curtis |
Re: 490,000 miles
My goal has been to get to 500k since I bought it from the original owner at 395k (w original VR6 12v eng still running and 2nd auto trans still shifting fine). I defer most of the credit to her for getting it to this level as she kept up w regular as well as irregular maintenance like a pro and kept great records with most service being done at VW dealers—at no small expense. ? |

Re: Norcold green light not lighting

开云体育UPDATE?: I finally found the culprit this Morning concerning the green light that wasn’t lighting when pressing the RED button on the mainboard. I decided to chase all the air from the gaz lines by forcing the furnace to work first. Next, I vacuummed with a shopvac the chimney outside ‘cause I suspected a spider’s web Inside. Well, after those two procédures, I tried to start the fridge on gas again and it worked !!! Marvelous.....see the results !!! ? Envoyé à partir de pour Windows ? |
Norcold green light not lighting
Yves Desilets
Hi,
I changed the burner this Spring. After the work, all seemed OK since today on a very hot day while trying to light up the fridge on gas. Each time I push the red button, the green light doesn't show up. There is propane in the tank and the lines are cleared. Don't understand what's going on. Take a look at the flame at the buttom through the window and it's showing. When I step outside to hear if there's a click-click noise at the outside vent, I hear a click-click noise. What does that mean ? It's lighted up but NO green light on the mainboard !!! Someone can help me troubleshoot ? Yves '97EVC |
Re: Fixing the EVC blender doors using special plugs, accessing from the front.
开云体育Thank you Jorrit for sharing your excellent write up on the blender doors fix. I downloaded your PDF and decided to give your “3rd way" a go using the 3d printed parts and Reinzosil as the sealant/adhesive.. ? I have a 2000 Eurovan Camper with 140k miles. The blender door foam starting blowing out of the vents a couple of years ago and now my AC isn’t as cold so I was motivated to make the repair. ? Once I had the dash apart I practiced installing the pieces, as Jorrit suggests, with them siliconed to my finger. ?I realized after a few dry runs that there was no way I could do this. I could reach some of the holes but I was not coordinated enough and I was physically unable to reach at least two of the holes that needed to be filled. Longer fingers and skinnier arms sure would have been helpful :-) After feeling defeated I started to noodle on another way to install the plastic pieces using some sort of rod to reach the holes. Through the dash I could see both blender doors and all holes that needed filling, or at least part of each hole. I used a headlamp placed in the radio slot and AC/Heater control slot so I could see what I was doing. I used a clamp on the cables that actuate the blender doors to lock them in a position/angle that was helpful.. In the slot where the radio was, I had to bend the “L” bracket that held the radio antenna, down and out of the way in order to reach the blender doors. The bracket was fairly easy to bend down by hand and then back up after I was finished. Then I used a piece of 1/8” cold rolled steel rod 22” long with a loop on one end and two bends on the other end. I was able to carefully fish the rod through the dash and reach every hole that needed filling. The rod was stiff enough that I could apply some pressure to make sure each piece was pushed all the way in and snug. The loop at one end of the rod allowed me to precisely control rolling the rod and the two different angled "bends" were each used to temporarily glue (with silicone) the plastic bits to. The small bend on the very end of the rod allowed me to reach the most difficult to reach small holes on the left side of the rear blender door. (See photo) The very top hole and bottom hole on that section were the hardest to reach/install. I had to adjust the door slightly open in order to reach both of those. The other bend in the rod angle was used to install all of the other plastic pieces...I also put a slight bow in the overall length of the rod so I could reach every hole. I’m attaching a photo of the rod I used.. I used quit a bit of the silicone to glue each piece to the rod to avoid dropping them. ?After I pressed the pieces into the blender doors I used the end of the rod to scrap off as much of the excess silicone as I could. ?I did managed to drop two of the pieces during the installation but I was able to retrieve them using a vacuum cleaner that had a 1/2” x 24” plastic irrigation tube taped to the end. The vacuum modification was also key to being able reach and remove all of the old foam that was left on the blender doors. I probably spent just as much time cleaning the old foam off of the blender doors as I did gluing in the new plastic pieces. ? I hope this helps! David |

Just to second the recommendation to clear the lines. I replaced the burner a year ago, all was well. This year had issues after storage, but once I shop vacuumed out the fluent it’s worked better than ever. R On Fri, Aug 5, 2022 at 4:13 PM Wigen via <chenely63=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote:

Last year I pulled my Norcold out of my 1995 EVC to change out the burner. This link was provided on this list before, this is my write up and pictures of the job which I posted up on TheSamba.com.

Norcold Ignitor Fix
#Norcold
The attached document is a complete set of instructions for identifying and repairing the Norcold gas ignitor issue that prevents the propane circuit from working.
This procedure is accomplished with readily available parts that are not too expensive and do not require replacement of the ignitor unit. Please read through the entire document. It is recommended that you print it before statrting.? If you find errors or want revisions, please contact me and I will make changes.? |
Re: 97 Eurovan running hot
An additional factor is the bypass thermostat.? It will restrict the flow to the cooler somewhat and may cause the tranny to run a bit hotter but take some heat load off the radiator at the same time.? ?Mine has no thermostat so my engine runs a bit hotter and the tranny runs almost too cool.? Never seen the trany break 200 f since adding the cooler.

Re: 97 Eurovan running hot
开云体育Hi Ken,?Not sure if helpful, but I also have a ’97 EVC that currently has about 107,000 miles. I recently installed a trans cooler at 105,000 along with a rebuilt transmission.? Since installing and monitoring the ScanGauge (at 95,000 miles), I noticed that the engine water temp was typically between 190-210 F. The trans temp would fluctuate well into the 250’s under heavy load, particularly in the stop and go traffic of the city and on long mountain pass climbs. When it failed (no 4th gear), temps spiked to 280 F before I was able to safely pull off and cool down. Since installing a GoWesty trans cooler, engine water temps have stayed roughly the same, and I’ve logged 230 F on the transmission temps once during a hot summer day in stop and go traffic. Turning on the A/C to force the radiator fans on got the temps back down to nominal range (~200 F) within 10 minutes, despite stop and go traffic. I am in Los Angeles, and it’s not getting any cooler here.? A

Re: 97 Eurovan running hot
interesting point. I put the tranny cooler on as soon as I bought the van so I don't have a comparison to check it with prior to the installation. But a previous one I owned didn't seem to run hot. I'll play around with the tranny cooler and see if that indeed is the issue.

Re: Westfalia pop top
I’m a 70-year-old woman with a 2002 Eurovan pop-top, and have found it makes a big difference if you open the sliding door and/or the back hatch before trying to open or close the pop-top… otherwise, you’re creating an air-pressure difference that works against you.? My pop-top is original, and while it’s bit heavy, I have no problem opening and closing it by myself with no other implements.
Hope this help! Ricki ‘02 Weekender with 190k miles on original transmission (w/ external cooler) |
