Re: Problem with my charging system ???

开云体育

HI Yves - I had a similar problem with my ’97 EVC and traced it back to the coach battery low voltage. If the coach battery voltage drops, it will pull the whole system voltage lower while running as the alternator attempts to charge both batteries. This led to me to discover that the Magnavolt house charger system/inverter was inoperative. I replaced it with a newer inverter (as per Michael Diehr’s helpful blog posts). As a precaution I also replaced the solenoid that connects the coach battery to the alternator while running. The solenoid connection points were rusty, as were the grounding bolts in the rear of the van for the inverter.
I do also try to keep the coach battery charged during long periods of resting.?
Hope this helps,?
Alex

Hi again,

This time, I'm confused with the readings of voltage on my SG II. Recently, I had my charging system and battery tested by my mechanic. The diagnostic shown on his device (electronic application) was that everything was working correctly on my EV. But that's not what the SG indicates when I'm on the road !!! In fact, the voltage reading is always around 13,1 Volts and sometimes indicates 12,9 volts. I was thinking that my alternator was not charging correctly 'cause somebody on a Rialta Group here in Canada told me that his SG was always indicating 13,5 Volts while driving, no matter if lights, radio and AC are ON !! So, is there a problem with my charging system even if a diagnostic showed nothing wrong ? One thing I noticed is that my engine battery tends to drop a bit over time to 12,3 Volts, especially when I don't use the van for a week or two....Thanks.

What is the correct level of transmission oil on the dipstick

With the SG reading between 95 and 113 (I shoot for 105), the fluid should be between the dots.

We do them at CaveVan on almost everything we build.?

There are only two units I know of that fit. One is about $500 Sony XAV-5000 and currently unavailable and the other is about $700 Sony XAV-7000 and limited availability.

The dash needs some fabrication work to put it in.?

We also do a rear backup camera with this set up.?

I currently have a bluetooth enabled in-dash Kenwood CD/radio player that I had installed in my 03 Weekender years ago, but now I’m totally spoiled by the CarPlay feature in my Golf Alltrack.
Thanks for any advice!?

Re: Sliding door lock

I had the door lock binding with door panel scenario as mentioned in message #2. Re-glued the door panel clips/fasteners and solved the issue.

Re: Eurovan mechanic in SF Bay area with transmission experience

I had my 2002 weekender transmission & timing chains replaced by Michael?@ Valley Wagonworks in San Rafael (transmission from German Transaxle in Oregon).? I'm a year into the rebuilt transmission & timing chains (& new transmission cooler) & have had 0 issues.??
?
Given I live in Mt. View, I also bring my van for light maintenance (oil, air filter, transmission?fluids) to Euro Quattro.? Tony, the owner, has a Eurovan & his mechanic is familiar with their ins & outs.? They also have never overpriced me on any of the work & have?done some minor work for free (tightening lug nuts on tires).
?
However, I bring my major work to Michael?@ Valley Wagonworks, as he's the true Eurovan/Vanagon expert for anything engine & interior/poptop related.? I'd give him a call first to check his schedule.? He had to transport my transmission to Oregon & grab the rebuilt transmission?back to San Rafael.

I second Ricki’s recommendation for Michael at Valley Wagonworks, in San Rafael.
Call soon, and expect an appointment in 3 weeks, because he’s very busy.

Re: Eurovan mechanic in SF Bay area with transmission experience

I can recommend Tony at Euroquattro in Mountain View.

He has taken care of my 1999 EVC since 2006 when he did the timing chain, not cheap, but excellent work.

Re: Eurovan mechanic in SF Bay area with transmission experience

Michael Dinger at Valley Wagonworks in San Rafael is the best Eurovan mechanic in the Bay area. He did my timing chain system, and checked my transmission, about 6 years ago and no problems since. Hopefully he's still there (I'm up in WA now, and don't have a mechanic nearby who I would trust with my engine, sadly).

Small white plastic clips
get brittle, levers disconnect, the electric pins (4) can get corroded.

Be careful pulling the door card off.

Re: Mechanic for 01 EV WK in Chicago?

While looking for a shop to work on my 02 weekender I called Import Service in Glenview and was told they have worked on Eurovans.I haven't had my 02 serviced by them (yet) but I talked to Dan and he seems knowledgeable about our V6 engines. Their number is 847-724-4336. If you do use them please post your experience.

Do any of you have a person or shop in the Chicago area that works on EVs? I saw that there was a list somewhere but the reviews were pretty old, and a lot of "Not recommended".

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Eurovan tire load rating

I have been advised by a local VW specialty shop
that C rating is more important than XL rating
even it if means a tire that is not rated 102H
What matters is the actual load index. Where the "C" rating comes in (denoting Commercial, not load range C - they are different) is that if the tire is not a truck (commercial) tire its functioning load index must be reduced by 9% if mounted to a truck (or Eurovan). So for Eurovan purposes, a 102H tire isn't really 102H unless it's a truck tire. Technically a passenger Eurovan would call for no less than a 100 load index (after being de-rated by 9% if not a truck tire). A tire that is below that spec is unsafe for a Eurovan even if it says C or XL. Above that spec there are still other important considerations beyond load capacity. We are no longer in the tire business but our Tire Safety page is still up for informational purposes and may be worth a read:

My last set of tires were Nokian 102H XL, and even though they still have deep tread they have developed such severe cracks that one of them went flat and is unrepairable(!) after just 10yrs and 30K miles of summer-only driving.

I cannot find a tire rated both 102H and C-load, or I would get that. Can anyone please share their experience and recommendations on the subject?

Google "tire lifetime" and see why you should have replaced them years ago! 10 yr old tires are unsafe!
