Re: Whining Noise. Is it beginning of Tranny issues?

Slightly off topic but I use Fluid Rx to check my transmission fluid.? Even though I have an external transmission cooler and a Scan Gauge II with which to monitor the fluid's temperature, I check it after every long trip or any trip where I have encountered a lot of stop-and-go traffic or hill/mountain climbing.

Fluid Rx It is not a full spectroscopic oil analysis and won't indicate suspended metal fragments if they are too small to be seen with the naked eye.? That said, it is very easy requiring only a drop or two of oil/transmission fluid be put on the special paper and comparing the color to a chart they include.? Being able to easily do this is one of the main reasons I was so interested in getting a transmission dipstick and tube installed.?

agreed. The OEM batteries are pretty affordable fit without issue and last pretty long.

I just ordered an SLA battery for under the seat as i have added a real fridge and a solar panel.

Re: battery size group 49

i have a sla 1180 on the way.?

i looked at the group 49 and the looked just a tad too wide... also the 190mm height is cutting it really really close so i was not sure. Thank you for the confirmation that it can be made fit.

Re: Whining Noise. Is it beginning of Tranny issues?

Need to give mileage.? What motor?? AES- VR6-12V?.? How loud?? How high pitch?? If the car is shifting okay, then probably not the tranny, but wouldn't hurt to do as Bob W suggests, or change fluid if it is that cycle.? Could be idler pulley for accessory belt, air conditioning clutch pulley, or could be the power steering system.? Please let us know the outcome.

Re: Whining Noise. Is it beginning of Tranny issues?

Glynn,

I posted similar question last week (Subject: whirling noise). The noise is not high pitched, but more like really quite golf cart. I was told by dealership that it was coming from the transmission differential and would lead to an eventual transmission failure/replacement. The transmission on my 2003 EVW with 175k miles is shifting smooth. Please keep me posted on what you find from your mechanic

Thank you,

Just started getting a high pitched
whining noise. ?At any speed. ?Shifting is fine, and also
it will still make the noise when in neutral (when I

Seeking Recommended Camp Sites in Wallowa Lake State Park and Other Comments

Hi Folks,

We will be visiting our kids in south Puget Sound in August and will leave them to take four weeks to get back home. We would like to go to the Wallowa Mountains.

Do any of you have camp sites you would recommend for an EVC at Wallowa Lake State Park and/or any other recommended camp grounds and camp sites on the way to and in the Wallowa's? All comments etc. are welcomed. We could use some help focusing our planning!!!!

Much thanks.

The second and third symptoms are typical of low hydraulic pressure.

Since you'v set the level correctly, the problem could well be a worn valve body.? This is known to happen on these transmissions.
You can either do the Kerma mod (which turns up the pressure) or replace the valve body.
I'd to the latter.? There are companies that make modified valve bodies.

I did the Kerma mod before I fullly understood what it did and kind of wish I hadn't.

Hi all,

First of all thanks to all of you for this group. It continues to be a great source of information for me learning my way around Eurovans. ?

I know transmissions are a frequent topic and I have read most of the archives and files section documents. ?

I'm having some specific symptoms and am wondering if anyone else has had the same. Some initial notes:

- It's a 2000 eurovan with ~140k miles. I assume transmission is original but not sure (few records from prior owner).

- I'm familiar with the tr ansmission fluid change procedure and have done it several times (I had a 1999 Eurovan for several years before I recently sold it and then shortly thereafter bought another one with a much nicer body and interior).

- I have changed fluid and filter in this one twice after I bought it several months ago (twice to get more of the old fluid out).

- I do overfill a bit, level the van, shift through all gears, and then drain to even at ~40C transmission temp while running.?

- no extra AT cooler.

Symptoms (two main ones and one 'sorta' one):

- One symptom is occasional hard 1-2 shifts under no load (like coasting down a hill). This only happens maybe 20% of the time when going downhill. It may have happened once or twice in going from 2-3 but so rare that I'm not even sure it happened (I try to pay attention). New fluid and transmission 'reset' procedure doesn't seem to affect it (but again it doesn't happen all of the time).

- Other symptom is delay in getting into drive from park. ?It's as if there's not enough pressure to make the shift happen. ?I can get it to shift by giving it a bit of gas but giving it a lot more gas makes the shift into drive harder.

- No symptoms when shifting under load (cli mbing a hill or accelerating).?

- Third symptom is it seems to not want to upshift when it should sometimes. ?i.e. low load and ready to go to 3rd or OD but stays in lower gear longer than needed. ?Again like it can't get enough pressure to force the shift. ?It does shift eventually.?

Wanting to avoid letting a problem grow over time (and not wanting to purchase transmissions and parts in blind fear), I'm wondering if my description fits any problems any of you have had and what if anything resolve d it (i.e. new valve body, new controller, new wire harness, new transmission, solenoid adjustment by a qualified shop, etc.).?

Thanks again to all who participate on this list - I hope sometime to repay some of the great VW karma here!

Regards,

Todd?

Possible low trans fluid. When I change the fluid in my 03, I do what you do and add: fluid and fun through the gears at least 2 more times until i am sure that it is full.
