Re: Dying Eurovan Theory
My prime suspect would be the water pump. Had a friend's 93 go out around
80,000. Made an increasingly horrible grinding noise. We confirmed it by pulling the belly pan off the vehicle, and sticking an automotive stethoscope on the bottom of the engine behind where the water pump mounts (you have to be in the middle of the car in the front, sticking the probe on the "back" of the right side of the engine. If it's really dying, you might also find some dripping coolant in that area. If the water pump seized-it would be dramatic. Would probably shred the timing belt and cause lots of awful noise. I've heard that the 93 engine is not a interference type (where the valves will crash into the pistons if the timing gets messed up), BUT I've also heard that is only true when the engine is off. At high speed with full pressure on the hydraulic lifters, I've heard that it can interfere and nuke your cylinder head. Anyone know the story on that? I definitely recommend doing some probing before taking it apart. But at 90000 miles, if you haven't replaced timing belt and water pump, you are definitely due for that anyway. I replaced both belts and pump at 90,000 as preventative maintenance, even though problems had not started. Good luck! -gb |

I'll need to plan a trip back to see it finished. I worked on a similar attraction in Dearborn for Ford, called the Spirit of Ford. It's across from the Henry Ford Museum. www.spiritofford.com Of course there are no cool Volkswagens there. I would look in two areas:
1. Motor mounts. If the rear mount has failed the engine may have moved enough to allow parts of the exhaust system to hit somewhere and make noise. 2. CV joint. This can happen if the joint is worn out and loose. Get under and see if the shaft can be moved up & down. In and out motion is normal and OK. |

A brand new noise, it starts as soon as I go faster than 60 mph. (I don't
notice it on normal acceleration or otherwise under 60 mph.) From the driver's seat, it sounds/feels like it's right in front of me under the hood, but I know that can be deceiving. Not a little noise, bad enough that we turned around on a trip this weekend and came home and traded cars. Sound familiar to anyone? Thanks. Joan |

frustrating oil leak
don hector
my 92evcl{no air con.} has had a persistant oil leak which shows up
as engine oil running down and dripping from the power steering pump. i've replaced both the crank and cam seals tightened the 27 mm nut behind the oil filter to no avail.could it be the oil pump gasket ? i've power washed everthing to try to see the leaks origin. any one ever had a leak like this on the belt side ? thanks, don leaky 92evcl,94cargo |
