Help needed with radiator resistor for '93 EV

Sorry if this posts twice, but my mail is set to receive my own messages, and
this hasn't shown up.

I ordered radiator fan resistors from Europarts and went to install them
today. First I was told that I needed 2, but could only find one mounted
just under the battery. When I tried to replace it, the new one was a bit
larger than the old.

I checked my saved message file and came up with one from last August posted
by Norman, T4mv@..., who listed the old and new part numbers for the
a/c resistors.

It looks like they shipped me 2 a/c resistors instead of the radiator
variety. I'm not sure if these are interchangeable. The part number matches
the new part number listed in Norman's email, and the old part doesn't have
the same part number as the one Norman replaced.

At first I thought I ordered the wrong part, but my receipt says "cooling fan
resistor", and has the same part number that I received. 701 959 263D
Anyone know the correct part number?

I'm not sure. How wide is the awning?

If the tent flap can fit over the awning, then it should work fine. Does the
awning keep rain from dripping behind it?

I notice I have a "Premium Audio" AM/FM/Cassette/CD Changer radio unit
in my 1999 Eurovan, but no CD changer. Has anyone installed a changer?
What brand will fit? Or does all cd changers will fit? Do you just
plug the changer in back of the radio or into a harness? Where inside
the Eurovan do you put the CD changer? Under the passenger seat? Screw
it to the floor near the rear hatch? Or inside the compartments in the
walls near the rear hatch? Does anyone know for sure where Volkswagen
puts the CD Changer?

We have had a 2000 EV MV Weekender on order since 9/99. I was told in
Jan 2000 that Westphalia would not start building our vehicle until
sometime in March 2000. I am calling the dealer this week for an
update. Overall, we have been waiting since 4/99 as they shipped a 1999
without the pop top in 9/99 and I refused acceptance. The 2000 order
was placed then. VW of America has been completely worthless in
expediting this order. Maybe if you are less picky on a color than I
was you may have better luck. I didn't want white, which may have been
the kiss of death!

Good luck...

Re: Roof Storage above the Cab

I've looked into the whitewater bags. So far I haven't found the perfect
size. The largest one I've found with a zipper is only 29". The space is
about 42 - 43" by 12 - 13" . The larger whitewater bags don't have zippers
( the ones I've seen ). They are top loaders. I am still hoping for the
perfect sized bag with the zipper. You can stand in the van and open the
screen and get into the bag very easily.

I'm in Lexington, Ky without my van right now. Can measure exactly tomorrow.

Thanks. David Lawyer

Same problem here
Found a discount carpet place here in Manteca Ca that had the right
color carpet to satisfy the 'boss' and cut it to shape for the camper
area.
did the same for the front foot area and the space between the seats.
They are removable, hose or scrub them when needed, let dry, reinstall.

Re: Roof Storage above the Cab

It is not one of the modern trailers, but there is a pic on my web site
of a trailer VW made (or had made) to be pulled behind bugs and
squarebacks. It is a fiberglass bubble but inside is the "guts" of a
westy camper. It is just like a westy insie the trailer, very cool
and from what I understand not a whole lote of these thigns are still
around. It is also very light, when unhooked one man can pick it up and
roll it into a flat area, ect.

to see pic of that trailer goto:

it is at the top of the page, doesn't show the trailer up close- it is
hitched to a nice double-cab

-Remember "FahrVergnuegen?" The subject line on this thread should
probably now read "FinanzVergnuegen" (sorry-can't find the 'umlaut'
key) Non-numeric folks beware. It sounds like for the long-haul/100K+
owner it makes sense at some lesser price, like maybe $800.

-Thank you, Joel Funk and Steve Wertheim, for the wisdom of your
counsel. Yeah, there MUST be padding in the $1500+/-$300 (the rough
range from "$100deductable,7yr/75Kmi,NoPriceGuarantee" option to the
"$0deductible,7yr/105Kmi,FullPriceGuarantee" option.

-ANOTHER TWIST is that there is a "FULL PRICE GUARANTEE" to be
considered as well: Say you buy the 105,000 miles and 7 years and have
a flawless experience (like you do not place ANY claim for repair
coverage) - they SAY you just request your warranty price refunded when
you hit the end of the term (mileage or years).

-Almost like it puts it on you to strategize whether you are going to
go in for the $300 repair or not, since your $1800 hangs in the balance
until you actually make your first claim. We call it
"FinanzVergnuegen." Place your bets...

My 2 cents is to go for an extended warranty. I just had my
transmission
replaced, at 10,000 miles, under warranty. I think that's a $5000
item.
Under warranty I also had one of my automatic window motors replaced.
Seems
like there are potentially alot of costly repairs out there. But I
don't
think the warranty is worth $1200 to $1800. In my opinion this is a
BIG
profit item for the dealer. I'd take it for $400 or $500. Have the
dealer
show you his cost on the item.

The Winnebago stuff so far has been trouble free.

Here we are, toes over the edge, just about to plunge into a new
EVC:
Is it worth $1200-1800 to have a "platinum" ext service plan that
allegedly covers "everything" including all so-called coach
components
for the next 7 years/ 75-105Kmiles? Half that? 10x that?

We hear of people with No Repairs Ever, and then we see stories here
and there (mainly here) that do NOT bode well. We are undaunted (we
know we must do this), but wondering . . . Has that fearless little
Kubota engine and VW chassis been holding up OK out there? Better
than
OK? And all them genuine Winnebago parts?

Any opinions, tepid or rabid, are welcome. We have the next 24
hours
to make our minds up. It just seems like a lot on top of a whole of
money, you know?

Yes, the Tourmobil is a free standing tent. All of the tents I have work
the same way.

The Tourmobil is made from a lighter weight material. It is very much like
most of the dome tents out there.

How about some measurements. Width and depth of this area would help.

There is an Italian company that makes the bags for Westfalia. I could see
if they will fit the EVC, or I could have them custom made.

Anyone in the St. Louis area with an EVC that would let me take some
measurements?

Re: <no subject>

Donald Gibbons

There is not too much out there on EV's. Your best bet for crash test
reports is vanagon.com. they have a section on EV crash test I think.

The basic problem is that the EV does not fit into the common van
classes. It has too much inside room to fit into the minivan class but
at the same time its engine is on the small size.

Whats good about it? Its big. there is plenty of room for 7 adults AND
their stuff. Take a look at the room behind the third seat of any
minivan and compare there. Also consider that this same space in a
typical minivan does not allow much crumple space if you get rear
ended. When you drive an EV you are so much higher that you can see
over minivans!

Reliability: The thing to know here is that the EV is not intended for
the same duty that minivans are designed for. They are heavy duty
almost industrial machines and built to last. I have heard stories
about typical EV's in germany going 300,000 miles with normal repairs.

Service. This is a weak area. If you are lucky your VW dealer will be
good at working on EV's. Some VW dealers are jerks!

We have had ours (93 MV) for about 70,000 miles (bought used at about
80,000) and the only time it did not start was the one time that the
battery went bad.

We have now replaced it with a 96 Rialta. A Rialta is a EV cab with a
full RV coach section. It has seating for 8, a bathroom, kitchen and a
generator. I got this because of the experance I had with the 93 EV.

Good luck!

Re: wont stay in 5th

Donald Gibbons

Poping out of any gear "can" be a serious problem. But most of the time
the problem lies outside the transmission. Is there enough gear oil in
the trans? If you drain the gear oil are there metal flakes/chunks in
it?

Does it pop out under certain conditions like when you are driving at a
constant speed and then let off on the throttle?

There are also many plastic parts in the shift linkage that can and do
go bad in time and can cause problems. Put the van on ramps/jackstands,
remove the belly pan and trace the rods from the shifter to the
transmission.

Last shot is engine mounts. If they are so worn that they allow the
engine/trans to move too much the motion can cause the trans to pop out
of gear.

None of these things will cost much time or money to do. Give them a
try before you dump alot of money into a new trany.

Bill,
There is an extremely cute trailer made in Colorado Springs for VW's
(and probably for just about anthing else. Made of fiberglass and
shaped kind of like a bubble. Can't for the life of me remember the
name of the company, but can drive by VW tomorrow and check if you are
interested. I recall they do have a website.

that is the most useful addition to the EVC we can buy. We've seen the
tents (where do you store them while you drive?) and canopies (a bit
expensive and most of our campsites we enter at 1900 every nite so the
sun is down). At least the trailer will allow us to carry the things we
wish to use, extending our range of experience. Our style of travel
allows that we tour in the day...either driving or walking. When the
adventure of the day is over we rush around in search of a
campsite...usually it's a private camp, unfortunately near an interstate,
too. The camping seems the least important activity of the day so far.
That's why I'm looking for a trailer. Looked at the Backpacker this
January...sadly it was just not nice enough for me. The top would not
fit well to the bottom. Several of us have the Backpacker but maybe I saw
one that was an early model? The Backpacker is no longer in production
now as we found out later. Looking at a more expensive, but similar one
called a "Tote"...found it on the net. The maker is in Indiana; we hope
to see it as we pass thru.>>
