Re: EuroVan Advertizing/March VW Trends

Gwyn Ap Nued

I would like to add to this conversation that about a month ago while
browsing upon a new EVC and a prolonged talk with the salesperson he
produced a brochure exclusively for the EVC. I would jsut keep checking back
with the dealers. The brochures are out there, yet with all of this talk
they would seem a rarity.. I personally still have not purchased an EVC but
plan to so by the begining of april. With a note to upgrades on stereos I
plan to use my Eclipse CD player and mount a CD changer right in front of
the transmission Lever upon the pash that extrudes from there. With the
encasing made dor the cd changer I am also going ot try to include a storage
place for a couple of magazines so the exchage will be trouble free withut
having to search for a new cartridge or changing out cd's. I have not really
gone into detail of how this is to be accomplished but as it becomes a
reality I will keep tabs on how it was done from an early step and include
pictures if it is so to be able to be done. I will also most likely upgrade
the front speakers with Boston Acoustic Pro seperates. I would also be
interested in knowing how much depth there is behind the panel and if there
is enough to be able to mount a 3 way system with the largest drivre being
an 8'. This will of course be mounted in a custom panel also as there is
little doubt that the aiming of the speakers along with the total depth of
the speaker will have to be compisated with the mount. I will probably put a
baffle behind the speakers to try to enclose them as well as possible
without having to mount a sub. I hope that this alone will give me enough
satisfaction while traveling down the road listening to all those fresh tune
on cdr that I have made from live recordings...

Re: How do you get the rear brakedrums off?

Donald Gibbons

While the book does not show it, EV's have a very neat modification to
the drums that earler VW's did not have.

There is a small bolt that holds the drum to the hub. There are also a
number of threaded holes in the drum that are not in the hub. This
means that the holes can be used as jackscrews to pop the drum off.

Remove the hold down bolt and use it a little at a time to remove the
drum. Very easy!

EV Raingutters

I have to pass on how pleased I am with the raingutters I got from Steve
Lashley. Today I finally got them installed and can only rave about how well
they look and how well they blend in with the EV. Our Weekender is burgundy
with black trim. You hardly notice they are there. If you are considering
these I can't say enough about them.

The best part is that I didn't need them today as it quit raining in Western
Oregon. Should have got them put on sooner.....;-)

I was able to downloaded the specs off of the web for
the 99EVC, and some dealers had a xerox copy of a
price sheet but none had a brochure. Several
salespeople told me they would get me a brochure and
call me when it came in, I never got a call.

Very strange. I guess they figure it's completely
different and shouldn't be
in the same brochure. Perhaps because of the
Winnebago deal they must keep
it separate. Is there even a 1999 EVC brochure at
all? I have the '95 and
'97 EVC brochure but never saw a '99 one.

VW Dealers (sigh)

DANIEL R HERBERT

I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My 1995 EVC was
purchased new at OWASCO, to the east of Toronto. We have
always been happy with OWASCO, but a visit there usually
consumes an entire day. As a result, we often take the van
to a local VW dealer, Don Valley VW for routine service.

A week ago, I phoned to schedule a 96,000 km service. I
asked them to prepare for a new serpentine belt, timing
belt, water pump as well as the other 96,000 service (brake
fluid flush, etc etc). I also needed Ontario's "Drive
Clean" test. They assured me that the service would take a
few hours, and the van would be ready "same day".

So today, I pop a bike into the van and drive over for my
appointment. They were expecting me, so I confirmed the
agenda, and rode off in the slush. Later, I get a call at
work, saying that they didn't have the parts, and that they
would need the van at least another day! I demanded (and
got) a free rental car, and requested them to pick up my
wife at home so that she could get the loaner.

The crowning irritation? Do they supply a Jetta or Golf?
No - a crummy Chev Cavalier!!! What kind of VW dealer
supplies a Chev as a loaner?

Sheesh!

Don't forget, over $35K and you have to pay luxury tax
in CA. Try to have them give you less for your trade
in to knock the price down below $35K.

I'm astounded.

I'm on the west side of Wisconsin and don't know of any VW events on
this side of the state. Seems that I heard of a group in Milwaukee on
the Vanagon list some time back though. Don't know what their contact
might be. You might look at vanagon.com to see what you can find.

is the alternator/recharging feature malfunctioning? (It will go

Second. When camping in Wisconsin's winter the coach battery dies

I guess my first question would be is your alternator charging the
coach battery at all. To check this, see what the coach battery
voltage
is without the engine running, then check it with the engine
running.
If the readings are the same the battery isn't being charged by the
alternator. I'd suspect the dual battery solenoid as I had to
replace
mine. It's located on the firewall in the vehicle battery
compartment.
Not hard to replace, just be sure not to overtorque the nuts on the
terminals. I ordered a replacement through the Winnebago dealer.
I also use a Walmart deep cycle battery in Wisconsin and it works
fine.

Bruce, to get the brake drums off:

1- Spray some WD40 around the center hub
2- Locate the two small metric threaded holes in the drum close to the center
hub.
3- Find the correct threaded bolts and hand thread them in as far as they
will go.
4- Using a wrench, turn them one at a time 1/2 turn each until the drum pops
free.

Dan,
I had the same problem with my dealer. No matter how much you try to suggest
they buy the parts ahead of time , they never do. The only solution is to
buy them yourself ahead of time and then hand them to the service people.

Re: How do you get the rear brakedrums off?

Michael G. McCarthy

The drums are a pain, but there is nothing holding them on once the wheel is
off and the one little bolt is removed. You just need to turn-and-tap with
a ballpeen hammer, lightly of course, and get the drum ringing enough to
break it loose from the center hub, where ordinary corrosion can make it
sieze.

Don't try chemicals for obvious reasons, and don't try a soft hammer either
since you'll end up having to whack too hard.

Once the drum has broke loose from the hub, you still might have some
trouble getting it past the shoes, so make sure you back off the starwheel
adjustment, thereby retracting the shoes from their usual almost-dragging
position.

Re: Rear heater blowing cold air on EV MV

Donald Gibbons

The rear heater is interlocked with the defrost setting. When in
Defrost the rear heater BLOWER does not work.

There can be problems with the coolant lines that go to the rear
heater. To replace it per the factory book you have to remove LOTS of
stuff. Many owners have made their own repairs. It is also possible
that some one just re-routed the hoses to avoid a leak.

The third possibility is that the electrical valve that controls the
coolant flow to the rear heater is not working.

Re: EV - The Movie

Didn't get the card, but would love to get the movie. Could someone e-mail
the address to which you are supposed to send the card so those of us not on
VW's list can inquire about getting a video.

Thanks

Re: Blower motor

<<SNIP
If the resistor pack is burnt-out, it must be
replaced. The pack snaps out easily. To locate it, look for the wiring
harness with 4 wires on the top of the blower motor/air handler housing
<<SNIP

Is this the part I need to replace if my blower only operates at high
setting?

Thanks, Leif
