correction regarding CV joints
Michael G. McCarthy
All,
In a prior post I advised the group that I'd been told there soon would be "no new CV joints available for EVs, only rebuilts." I've since learned that that's not correct. In correspondence with Steve at europarts-sd.com I've learned the facts: "Actually, VW had purchased their original joints from Lobro, as does nearly every European car manufacturer. They are about the only manufacturer of these joints. For some reason, VW has opted to have some independent company rebuild the joints here in North America rather than continue to buy new units from Lobro." I've long known that VW doesn't manufacture its own joints (in fact, VW or any auto"maker" doesn't manufacture much at all....mostly they design, assemble and market) so when I first heard that VW wouldn't be "making" new joints, I assumed that meant that LOBRO wouldn't be making new joints. Not true. Lobro will STILL be making new joints for the time being. All of which points to the real value of working with independents like Steve at europarts-sd.com and Ron at busdepot.com. Rebuilt CV joints will not last nearly as long as brand new joints. If you only buy from the dealer you'd have no choice but to get rebuilts (and very likely the dealer's parts counter will tell you--falsely--that only rebuilts are available). Steve and Ron know better, so work with them instead. Mike |
Re: Towing Eurovans
Darrell Boehler
Hi All,
I am new to eurovans but have had several t2 and t3. Plan to purchase a hitchless 97 t4 camper and will need to tow it home about 1000 miles. I plan to use a uhaul tow dolly and a f 150. Looking for sage advise with t4 tow dolly experience. Thanks much. Darrell Boehler |

Re: Opinions sought - Will my '93 EV Powertrain last 250K miles?
--- > Ron,
Caveat emptor! When I looked into financing a new EV last year when VW offered 0% (I have since been snapped out of my foolishness) I found out that the deal was for a term of two years only. The monthly payments were pretty high. At that time I found my credit union had a much better deal. Just thought you'd want to know that 'things aren't always what they seem'. I'm considering getting one of these for extra stuff on longer trips. They can be carried off, and are waterproof.
Also, some camping stores like Adventure 16 or REI carry these. Greg ** From: "Chris and Mary Kay Bell <chrisbell@...>" <chrisbell@...> _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* |

#2. The van came with 2 flip keys that are $100.00 plus programmingAha! Thanks. I test drove the MV with a 'flip' key that had the remote lock/unlock buttons. When I bought it, they stalled me for an hour while making a second key. The one they presented was the smaller one with the light. I tried it on the door, and it worked. But once I got home, I tried it in the ignition, and it *doesn't* work there. When I called the dealer, he said "they're all like that." Now I'm wondering what took them an hour to cut an ordinary key that doesn't have any of the "smarts" to work in the ignition! We have two drivers in the family, and will need a second ignition key. I'll have to go back to the dealer and argue a bit. #3. the rubber pads should be there. there nice to hold the cup in.(if No, I wouldn't do that. But knowing they should be there encourages me to bug the dealer for them, or failing that, order them for a 2003 and know they'll fit. -- Lee A. Have you checked your duct settings? I believe having it set to 'defroster' kills the rear heater fan. Hope it's as simple as that. I have heard more than one VW mechanic say that the EV automatic
transmission is very similar in design to the Passat automatic (but beefier). It might be easier to find somebody with experience towing a Passat, or adding a lube pump to a Passat. That information could be transfered/adapted to an EV. Tires & Warranties on Eurovans
tya2
Dear Listmates,
I have had a series of Eurovans and have probably bought 4 or 5 sets of tires. The latest surprise was when I bought a set of Michelin Agilis 51s last week and within 400 km had a puncture due to a screw penetration. Tire Warehouse where they were bought, said no light truck tires come with road hazard warranty and if you tire starts with anything on other than a P it is considered to be a light truck tire. Good question to ask the dealer where you are buying your new 2002 and 2003 Eurovans. What is the tire warranty and what does it cover? I expected better from Michelin... Reg Lukasik |
