Re: Bike Racks
Paul Eichen
Edward,
Thanks for the reply. Yes my EVC is new, just took delivery on Wednesday. It replaces a Volvo V70 AWD that was totalled by my son in a head-on collision with a telephone pool. The airbags did not deploy, so much for the worlds safest family car! I looked at lots of possibilities for a utility/sport/everyday driver. The EVC looks like the best of all worlds. Paul "edward a. bevan" <pcbeva-@...> wrote: original article: Hi Paul:if you can't find their number, the web site is not coming up at the moment) But I have a suggestion. I'm using a regular trunk mount rack that wouldfit on any sedan or wagon, it has pads to protect your paint and it's veryeasy to get on and off. The straps all connect to the rear hatch itself soyou can open it without having to remove the rack, in fact if you just needPaulchen-System has a product that keeps the door open with the rack loaded, it'sbasically a prop rod. If you plan to do a lot of bike toting, you'll probablywant something a little more substantial, but this is an great solutionfor most people and at a fraction of the cost, in fact, like many people youmay have one of these things already. The one I have is a " rode gear shuttle" It works good but if your going to buy one I would recommend one that isget a more secure fit. |

Trailer Question
I currently own 5 VW's, and over the years have owned 3 different VW vans and
just bought my first EVC--a brand new 1999. I love it! One reason I bought it was to tow a 3200lb. trailer, which should work given the 9200lb. GCWR and 5900lb. EVC GVWR. After reading the towing disclaimers in the EV manual, I am concerned about the EVC's ability to tow that weight for long trips. Does anyone have any experience towing that kind of weight with their EVC? This conference has been a real help to me--both in the shopping experience and now in the application. Thanks, Jim |

Re: What's the average age?
In 1981, I was a 24 year old mommy when I bought a 5 year
old 1976 Olive Green Westfalia Camper Van. I had a 1 and a 3 year old when I bought it. Shear brilliance. My children had a rich childhood with hundreds of stories of not only camping but playing in the car their whole life. I'm still driving it as my every day car today. We'll have 20 years of our life wrapped up in that car. This is the first time EVER I'm looking into replacing it. It's still in PRIMO condition. It HAS been a way of life. Kids are now 21 and 19 and are shocked that I'd even consider it. I'm tired of the stick shift and I'd like air conditioning otherwise I'd die owning that car. We still have the original tent (never been out of the box) Baby Hammock for over the front seat (Do the newer ones come with these?) Tables Utilities boxes Can't decide what to keep when we sell the car. Aleta Matthews 76 Westfalia Camper Van (green) Torrance, California I was wondering what the average age of a EVC owner ===== . . __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? don't remember. I turned 16 in 1970 and the car was a few years old. I had a love/hate relationship with that car because someone crashed into my dad's Austin Healy Sprite, which I thought I'd be driving one day, and after it was totalled Dad got the Bug. In 1980 I bought a Scirocco, which I still have, and did everything to it you could possible do in those days. It was turbocharged, fast, and had a great stereo too. Got a lot of miles on it, then someone broke into my garage and crushed its roof and hood while climbing on it to steal stuff from my rafters. It's in another garage now, and a day doesn't go by where I don't think about restoring it. Maybe I will one day with my sons. I've had a number of Rabbits, beaters mostly, and a fast and totally stock '83 GTI. Nice car. My wife later had a '86 GTI, and a '73 Super Beetle convertible. Sure wish we would have kept the convertible. She also had an early 60's Bus with her first husband, but I don't much about busses. It had a split windshield, if that's a clue. (It also eventually had a split roof, which is what happens when heavy winds knock trees over and one lands on top of a van........sigh.......) We later bought a used Audi 5000 Turbo, which was a beautiful car, but when our twins were born it was time for a minivan. We leased two Villagers in a row (with *nice* V-6 motors from the Maxima, fuel/ignition/ emission controls by Bosch, and bodies by Ford) while considering a new Eurovan, which were just too expensive in 1993. Now, with the kids bigger, we bought a GL in 1997 with 78K that was in excellent condition. We are back in the VW fold. jimru862-@... Re: The Garage Door
Jeff Lipnichan
Even our non camper EV2000 I had to make adjustments to our 7 ft
clearance garage door to get it in safely. When you open the sunroof it was way to close for my likes (would not handle any bump). I simply moved around a bunch of the pulleys and cables. The VW roof rack by Votex will still not clear. Jeff modva-@... wrote: original article: Edward A. Bevan wrote that he props his garage door open for maximumtoo until my husband decided to warm the engine, backed the van up for the tailpipe to clear the garage interior and took part of the bottom panel of thegarage door off. Fortunately for some wood rot, the garage door was theonly damage done and within a few days we had a new steel door with automaticopener that lifts the door with plenty of clearance for the van to get into thegarage. We did not get a larger door to avoid the expense of remodeling the7' height of a standard garage door. As I said the van with pop-top andfactory issue top vent goes in with a few inches to spare, but little else. Noroof top racks for us either. Too hard to reach to load and unload and tooprone to damage from low bridges, gas station canopies and low tree branches. |

Thank you to all who responded to my question about the drive from Tok
through Dawson. Very interesting and helpful. We definitely have it in our plans now. Probably won't do the trek over to Inuvik this time around but it sounds interesting. I will definitely keep my eyes open for a copy of The Milepost. Cheers, Terry '97EVC |

We bought our 99EVC in August. Its due for the first scheduled maintenance. We have gone on several camping trips, Indian River Inlet in Delaware is our favorite so far, and have not had any trouble with it. We think its the best $33k we ever spent. This is our fourth VW. I got a look at the salesmans manual when he left his desk. The profile for a EVC buyer fit us perfectly. I guess he had us pegged as soon as he saw us. X-Mailing-List: ev_update@... Subject: [ev_update] convince us! Dear Steve, I think you would like an EV with pop-top. Since you had the older versions before. It's a feeling you don't get in other campers. I am originally from Germany. I had there an '77 Westfalia Camper. I went on weekend tours with friends in their campers (other brands), it was nice but I loved my VW (...and I did not inhale, Ha Ha). It's so practical. Over here I had a '85 Vanagon Camper which I drove all over the US. I sold it finally last August with 220k miles on it. 2 weeks ago I found a nice used '93 EV Weekender (unfortunately without pop roof). They are hard to come by. Everybody keeps them for themselves and I cant afford a new one. For extra tents and stuff I can highly recommend the company Fiamma . The have awnings, tents, bike racks (better than "Paulchen") and other camping articles. Good luck Thomas in Florida |

much. The furnace is what sucks the fuel. The stove and refrigerator use a comparatively tiny amount of propane. When I lived in my EVC for a couple of months, I refilled (using about 2.5 gal) around every three weeks. I was cooking all my meals and running the refrigerator continuously. But I was in warmer weather, typically keeping the furnace off during the night, and running it for a half hour in the mornings only. There were a few cold nights where I kept the furnace on all night, but not many. I usually get around 2.5 gallons into the tank on a fill, but I usually fill when the silly little indoor LED display inside indicates empty. The tank is still over 1/4 full at this point, judging by the more accurate outdoor gauge. The tank has a shut-off device to prevent filling over 80% full, so basically the top 1/4 of the tank is unusable. So I'm really only using the middle 1/2 of the tank's capacity. I could get a longer time between fills if I would run the tank closer to empty. --Rich My EVC page at: "edward a. bevan" <pcbeva-@...> wrote: I ran it for 5 nights and boiled water about 5 times, 3 of the

Bike Racks
to Paul Eichen <paule@...>
Dear Paul and everybody else On my old '85 Vanagon Westf. camper I had a "Paulchen" made in Germany. I shipped it from Germany. But or my '93 EV weekender I found some helpful hints on this group. Somebody recommended Fiamma, a Italy based company which sells worldwide bike racks and awnings and other camping stuff. I think it's What a surprise, they had an outlet right around the corner (4 miles) from where I live. There model is made out of aluminum and held together with stainless steel screws. It was a complete rack for 2 bikes with quick release clamps for $252.-. Much cheaper and better than Paulchen. It mounts without drilling on the rear hatch. You can open the hatch without taking the rack off (unloaded otherwise the gas lifts don't hold the hatch open)). This rack can easily extended for 4 bikes. Thanks who ever recommended this company!!! Thomas in Florida |

Re: What's the average age?
Larry Schellhase
I would guess that my average age is a little over 28,
since I have been 56 for 5 months now. The 99EVC is my first VW camper, I had a 86 Vanagon GL, a 68 and 76 Ford Econoline - each with DIY camper conversions (bed and storage only). I had a 61 bug (bought used in 63) a 66 bug, a 77 Porsche 924 (which was more of a VW/Audi than a Porsche) and a 79 Dasher diesel. My wife (average age 27) has a 98 New Beetle. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. |
