Bike Racks
I used to have a Paulchen rack for my Vanagon. It was great once set
up, bit of a pain if you are going to carry many different bikes. Very sturdy, keeps bikes up high out of harms way. Very expensive if you buy from the dealer but if you live in Canada or are close to Ontario, check out Owasco, they are a Paulchen dealer. . com Dirk 92EVGL |

I haven't ever made that detour although I have driven the Alaska Highway about a dozen times. (Most recently this summer when our '99EVC was less than a week old.) Here is a web address that you need to check out. It is a complete and updated guide of the roads you will be traveling on. In Alaska we usually buy a copy of The Milepost each year at Costco for about half the cover price. I'm not sure if Costco stores in the lower 48 states carry it or not. BTW the best weather for traveling is from June through the first part of July. After that we often receive even more cloudy/rainy weather. If you have questions on what is worth seeing and doing and what is a waste of time just let me know. Revolution swing away rack. It will hold four bikes and even with bikes attached you can easily swing the entire rack around to the side of the van and then access your rear hatch. Yakima also makes a similar rack called the Terragate. You can find the Bauer rack at the Bauer website: <> -James Marks '99 EVC From: Wael ElSakka <welsakka@...> |
The Garage Door
Edward A. Bevan wrote that he props his garage door open for maximum
clearance to get his van in the family garage. We were doing that too until my husband decided to warm the engine, backed the van up for the tail pipe to clear the garage interior and took part of the bottom panel of the garage door off. Fortunately for some wood rot, the garage door was the only damage done and within a few days we had a new steel door with automatic opener that lifts the door with plenty of clearance for the van to get into the garage. We did not get a larger door to avoid the expense of remodeling the 7' height of a standard garage door. As I said the van with pop-top and factory issue top vent goes in with a few inches to spare, but little else. No roof top racks for us either. Too hard to reach to load and unload and too prone to damage from low bridges, gas station canopies and low tree branches. Rhode Island's Modvan |

we have the Nokia(n) Hakkapeliitta 10's. 195/70/R15 97Q reinforced. They're a very aggressive snow tire and we like them a lot. They like to "sing" along with the ride & not at pianissimo either, unlike what i've heard about the Agilis. ;-) checking the list archives should yield more than you'll ever want to know about EV tire solutions. I haven't been on that road personally, but my folks did it in a 33' winnebago two years ago with no problems. do you belong to AAA? if so, they're usually a decent source of info. also check Alaska Hwy dept's website (assuming they have one). good luck Bill -----Original Message-----

original article: Does anybody know the resistance and ohmage of these things?Resistance and "ohmage" are the same thing. The current rating (amperage) would be nice to know, however. The resistors should be rated to handle at least the same current as the fan motor fuse (not sure what that is offhand). Seems you could replace them with several 3-terminal regulators ofselected voltages which wouldnt get hot, waste amps or burn out3-terminal regulators will put out as much heat as an equivalent resistor, and they'll waste just as much power. Their advantage would be that they'd supply a more constant voltage, which isn't so critical for this application. A switching regulator would be efficient and cool, but expensive and complex overkill. But I'm with you, these resistors are obviously underrated, because they so often fail. A beefier power resistor, rated to handle more current, would be a useful upgrade. --Rich |

many (99EVC new owner questions)
Larry Schellhase
How much was "dealer cost" for a 99EVC?
1) My CD player (in dash Panasonic DP22 ) extremelyMine came with a Panasonic Cassette player which I replaced with a Sony CD player - the CDs do not get hot 2) My propane tank doesn't seem to take a fullcharge Mine doesn't seem to go all the way to the top either, I think they are supposed to have head room - otherwise you get liquid propane in the lines and nothing works. Sounds like you are using a lot of propane. 3) I'm thinking about getting the awning plus theI got the Shady Boy awning and like it very much. No screen house though. EVC? Sorry, I live in LA 5) Any one know of a way to carry a canoe with foamI haven't tried it yet - seems like the low cost solution, however you will have to remove the canoe to pop the top - a hassle that might be eliminated by a rack on the pop top. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Re: Bike Racks
Norman Leong
Well, IMHO, the best rear-mounted rack for any vintage EV is the Draftmaster system, which also requires that you get a 2" receiver hitch. Since a couple of us on this list have tandems, I think a complete setup to be able to haul them around is somewhere in the neighborhood of $775. I haven't done a whole lot of shopping for hitches, but the cost is a conservative estimate. They're killer racks though... Norman ______________________________________________________ |

RFP-1405D are direct replacement (not 1404). However, both are discontinued. Fosgate sells another model that Crutchfield suggests are direct replacement, but I wouldn't be sure unless someone measure the cage and told me the diameter was 4 25/32", and you'd still have to trim off the four mounting tabs.
