Help - my husband has begun the cv joint job on our 93 ev and ran into a slight problem. He un bolted them from the van but was unable to get them off. Does anyone know if there's a trick to this? We had this happen when our mechanic was trying to remove our transmission from the engine. He was so frustrated he took breaks to smash rocks : ). Turned out there was a bolt hidden waaaaay up in there (it was his first EV - he's done VW though for over 20 years). My husband thinks he might have had the jack in a spot that made him unable to seperate the joint from the van and he'll try it again this afternoon - but in case it isn't the problem, if anyone else has run into this - Puhleeeze let me know ASAP! We leave tomorrow afternoon for NJ (if this works) otherwise it's a rental van (yikes!). Thanks, Cyndi

I have the prices posted on the web page.

I can ship the shorter wheelbase kits by Federal Express for about $35. I
can't ship any of the kits by UPS as I would exceed their maximum length.
The longer wheelbase version that would fit the Winnebago campers can't be
shipped by Federal Express as they exceed their maximum length by 6 inches.

I will need to investigate some other shipping options and let everyone know.
I have a call into my freight forwarder and will post rates as soon as I
have them.

I might be able to take some to Canada (the Vancouver area), you may have to
wait awhile as I tend to make it up there only about 4 times a year. From
there it could be shipped with a Canadian trucking company, or we could
meet.

I've gotten behind on getting information out to some of you and I'm trying
my best to get caught up. I still owe some of you information on curtain
kits and cabinet kits. I'll keep working when I can.

This new web page has information on the add on aluminum rain gutter kits for
EuroVans. They come in black or silver (only black for the longer wheelbase)
and attach with screws and adhesive. Once installed, they look very much
like factory rain gutters.

There are several benefits to having rain gutters. You can easily attach a
side tent or an awning, and they help keep water from dripping in when your
doors or windows are open. They will also accommodate many gutter mounted
roof rack systems.

The gutters are reversible, so you can put them on both sides or just one
side of your EV. The end cap kits have different part numbers for the left
or right sides. The end cap kits include the screws, instructions and
adhesive.

I do not yet have these in stock, but I will place an order if I can get at
least 5 people who want to purchase them. They would all be shipped in a
long plastic tube, and I would need to repack them for each individual order
in a similar way.

I don't yet know the cost of shipping these, but expect to pay additional
charges for oversized packages.

Shipping to Canada may be near impossible, or prohibitively expensive. They
would be too long for standard post, and UPS is much too expensive to ship to
Canada with. I could investigate Federal Express to see what they may offer.

Importing German Side Tents, Carver Propane Heaters and other Accessories for

After months of finicky operation on propane I finally brought my Norcold
fridge in today to an authorized Norcold service center.

I brought it in thinking it was probably just dirty and it needed cleaning
since it seemed to be getting worse as time wore on (I bought the van in
December - so I've been using it for 8 months or so)

The service technician found (3) defects in the unit including crimped
wiring, a loose thermocoupler and the burner itself wasn't very stable
(defective part).

He also suggested some modifications including more insulation around the
vent/chimney tubes and drilling some holes in those tubes...The reason - He
found condensation forms in these tubes when they get hot and then the water
drips back down onto the flame which extinguishes the flame and makes it
very difficult to light again - Now the condensation will drip outside of
the van rather than back inside the burner box!
This explains why I would be able to light the fridge at the beginning of a
trip and usually one day into it...it would go out and be impossible to
light again.

I took my van home today and left the fridge with the service center where
they are waiting for new parts and once they get them - will bench test the
fridge for several days...
The good news is I can still use the van while I'm waiting.

The technician promised me that once these defects are repaired the fridge
should work flawlessly...
Even if it gets dirty inside...he says it still should work OK.
He says they are good units...there's nothing inherently wrong with their
design...
It's just that the parts and the fridge aren't always assembled properly.

I also learned that because the fridge is less than 12 months old - I won't
pay anything or do any paperwork...The service center is going to bill
Norcold directly!

The moral of the story...If you're having any problems with your
fridge...especially if you have a '99 that's less than 12 months old - bring
it to one of the Norcold service centers listed in your Eurovan binder.
It's quite likely the unit may be full of defects...that are fixable...and
won't cost you anything!

My VW dealer wouldn't even look at it...and to tell you the truth...I
wouldn't want a VW dealer to touch it...How could they possibly know what's
going on with these refrigerator units?
Let them concentrate on what they should know best...and that is fixing the
mechanical aspects of the vehicle.

These Norcold service shops repair a lot of these refrigerators (this
particular shop has actually worked on several EVC's and for years they have
been fixing Dometic fridges in Vanagons) know about all the defects...and
have a strong relationship with Norcold for parts and warranty billing.

We'll see once I get the fridge back how good of a job they did...I'll keep
you posted!

Hi Geoff,
Hows the sky business? Nokia makes some pretty good snow tires (although I have
heard they are quite noisy). Also, there is a German tire that I can't pronounce
(starts with an "h") that has a reinforced sidewall and sufficient load rating.
I'll try to remember to check next week when I take my wifes car into Discount
Tire for rotation and balancing. If you like, I'll also get some prices. Might
make a good excuse to get back up to Denver.

BTW. Just replaced the front passenger car balloon tires with some used C64's
from a list member and WOW. If you are driving on non reinforced tires now do
yourself a favor and get the "right" tires. The difference in handling is
impressive.

Both front and rear shocks are easily installed, by the do it your selfer.
No special tools needed.

I'm still fumbling around on this egroup thing. A big thanks to Steve Maller for maintaining our previous list.

I'm going to break down and install the Bilstein's on the EV. Does anyone have suggestions for a mail order supplier? I can search the auto parts stores locally, but I'm in no hurry and can easily order them and wait for the mailman.

The camper handles wonderfully on all paved road conditions.

So far, that's been Winnebago's production method -- a new camper for
odd-numbered years. That doesn't mean you can't buy a camper in even
numbered years, just that the camper model year may not coincide with
the purchase year.

You can expect to pay somewhere between 32k and 33k for the camper.
36k is the window sticker price -- negotiate harder. ;-)

Actually, white is probably the perfect color for a camper. It
reflects the sun's heat fantastically and doesn't show dirt or road
grime very much. Its a wonderful vehicle.

'97 EVC

Just returned last week from a trip from Wisconsin to the Canadian
Rockies. Everything in the camper worked fine for the trip.
Saw few EVC's on the trip until Aug. 22 when we camped at Mosquito Creek
campground which has a total of 32 sites. Believe it or not, 4 of them were
occupied by EVCs that night; 1 from BC, 1 from CA, 1 From MN, and mine from
WI. We could have had a reunion right there! Any list members who were there
that night?
For those of you lusting for Westfalia campers: a German on holiday in
Canada with a rented Dodge van camper and a Westfalia EuroVan in Germany
came over and wanted to see my camper in Jasper. After he looked it over he
said he was very jealous. He would much prefer the Winnebago conversion to
his Westfalia at home. However, there is another side to this story. When I
asked him what engine he had in his EuroVan at home he hesitated and had a
sheepish look on his face. He said he had an engine specially built for
them. It is a five cylinder and will drive the EuroVan at 205 km/hr. That's
over 120 mph! Well, I guess if you get to drive on the Autobahn with no
speed limit that would be nice. I'm quite satisfied with my stock 5
cylinder. It consistently turned in over 15 mpg pulling a utility trailer
and approached 20 mpg when we had a tailwind.
Met a number of EVCers who were having problems with the fridge. I
wonder how many of the problems are due to insects or spiders decreasing the
airflow in the exhaust and intake pipes of the fridge. Once in a while I
remove the outside cover on mine and put a vacuum hose over the exhaust tube
to suck any developing obstructions out. I also run the fridge for a while
after each time I wash the car to dry out any moisture that may have gone
in there. So far my fridge is working fine. It's capacity is to cool about
40 degrees below ambient temp. If I have things which need to be cooled down
in the fridge, I put them in in the evening when the fridge has more cooling
power during the cool hours. I also try to park with the fridge on the
shaded side of the car whenever possible, even better if the whole car can
be shaded to keep the interior temps down. If the interior is at 120
degrees, I can't expect the fridge to cool below 80 degrees.

I just hope VW keeps selling and improving the E VAN. I wanted to replace my
85 Vanagon after nine years and they didn't make them any more so I bought a
93 E VAN and hope they are still around when I'm ready for a new "bus"

Lambo a few years ago that only rich Middle Eastern type could afford? LETS

The problem I have is getting them from SC to NC. All the local
authorized Michelin dealers claim they can't order it. Same with WalMart.
So I will have to call Michelin again tomorrow.

As was mentioned in another post, there are plenty of Agilis tires. It is
just a matter of getting them. I found that if you have the Michelin
part # (99128), that it cures most of the problem. If you are at your
local tire shop, you may have to talk to their supplier, and convince
them.

Here in the Northwest, people have had good luck with Price/Costco
Warehouse store- if they have the stock #....

VW sold the odd number year EVCs for two years for each model until the
mext one came out. For example, the 97 EVC was available rightn up to
Aug 98 when the 99 EVC came out

There's dozens of aftermarket alarms you coud install with this feature

Seems like some people managed too get the EVC right around 32.5K, it
will depend on your dealers willingness to negotiate and you
willingness to wait.

Only white for the EVC, the EV is available in many other colors
