'99 VR6 Valve Cover Gasket Leak
Looking for some advice on how to repair my 1999 EVC's 12 valve VR6 valve cover gasket which is leaking. The gasket is metal and is integrated into the valve cover. Back in the day you'd buy a new cover which came with the gasket. As you may have guessed you can't buy a new replacement anymore. I am trying to determine the best course of action. Hunt down a used cover with gasket that seems to be in good enough condition, modify a cover or gasket from a different model VW, or get creative with my current cover and the best choice sealant. Many of our EVs, EVCs, and T4s will likely be needing this fix but it has been some yeas since you could source the part.?
?
For reference, this video sums up the situation well, but I can't find info on if the creator's fix held up over time. https://youtu.be/kjqYDa20bMo?t=62
?
What have y'all done? Who has a recommendation? Or who found a fix that held up? |
Re: Any UK Eurovan owners out there?
I also have a t5 eurovan built by Winnebago, I was also in the UK but have now moved to the mainland (so the steering wheel is now on the correct side!).? Mine was imported from Tokyo by a former owner.? I also never saw another, either in the UK or here.? Not very common.

Re: High idle RPM and radiator fans seem to not be turning on
Last time this happened to me, my idle valve was stuck open. ?I disconnected the power and the idle returned to normal (when warm). ?But on a cold start it wouldn't idle (no surprise really). ?I cleaned the valve with nasty solvent (carb cleaner or the like). ?I think I sprayed some other light lubricant after but I can't recall. ?It is like a small motor that is pulse modulated. ?
I haven't bought a proper spare (yet). ?I tried a super cheap one off AliExpress but it didn't work. ?An OEM is like $400 CAD or something. ?A more legitimate unit is still $200 or so. ?My original still seems to work just fine since the cleaning.
?
Based on your comment, there is also a cold start mode that uses one of temp sensors.
From my notes:
"BLACK or BLUE G62 (Engine Coolant Temp Sensor), a two-wire sensor on the head fitting that signals the ECM (it's critical to helping the ECM set correct timing and mixture, but is not part of cooling system). (See Bentley Vol 1, page C 19-7; also see Bentley Vol 2, page X-215.) " |
High idle RPM and radiator fans seem to not be turning on
I've noticed that my 1993 Eurovan has been idling high (about 1500+ RPMs).
And I'm 99% sure that my radiator fans have not been turning on. ?
I'm wondering if a temp sensor or something else could be to blame... and how I might be able to check it.
I did have a leak and a day when it ran quite hot for a 20 minute drive.? Maybe the coolant temp sensor got damaged? Does anybody have a measuring blocks legend (I have VCDS) with appropriate value ranges for the temp sensor(s)? I ran an autoscan VCDS, but the 1993 scan results are very basic. No errors. ?
Maybe a vacuum leak as well? |
wiring diagram for behind fuse box
On my 02 mv I can not remove the drop down fuse panel to get at the driver door harness connectors. I can swing the white tabs up but only the right side of the fuse box will lift up. The left side is firmly frozen in place like something in the back is blocking that side. lying on my back and Looking up and behind the fuse panel there is a nightmare of wires and I'm very reluctant to start reaching up into them in order to find the blockage. All the on line diagrams only show the front of the relay and fuse panels. I will need to know where all those wires and connectors are mounted if I have to unplug them in order to find and unblock the fuse panel. Anyone have a back side diagram? Thanks for any help. Re: 2003 body (doors & hatchback) for 1993
DB a while back I was looking into replacing my drivers door on my 02 weekender with one from a 93 in order to have a crank down window. I don't remember the site but it said that the body on the SWB from 93-03 were the same. There are doors and hatches in the Eurovan SAMBA classifieds. Good luck. Re: Eurovan Winnebago conversion in the local junk yard
Hey Mark,
?
Would you mind scoping out a few items that I'd be interested in?
?
- Driver's side fender shell (it looks to be in good shape from the pic you posted)
- Passenger side sliding door
- Pop top's canvas tent (especially the screens) - my top is good, just the tent is showing its age
- Winnebago luggage rack/bin. A few years ago, I donated mine to the great state of Kansas, somewhere on I-70. I also donated my plastic propane tank cover somewhere on route 160 while crossing the Navajo Nation - if any of yinz stumble across these items in your travels on these roads, let me know ;-)
?
If you can, next time your scavenging, please let me know if the above are still on the vehicle and their condition. I can swing by the salvage yard and remove them myself when I stop by your place to retrieve the wheels that you've already removed for me (thank you very much).
?
I'm still planning to be back in Boalsburg, PA end of February/early March and will also be visiting my cousin in Altoona, I think a little more than an hour from you.?
?
Thanks again,
Pete

Re: Eurovan Winnebago conversion in the local junk yard
Jim 95 and all,
?
I have not made it back down to the junkyard yet to get more from the Winnebago eurovan.? It turned cold and winter here since a few days after the new year.? I just have not had the right time to get back down there and remove some more items.? I might get there this weekend, but it is a slim chance.? It is to warm up above freezing on Sat so it would be nice to get down there.? Then next week another round of bitter cold is heading this way for a few days but the 25th is to be starting a warm up I believe.
?
I just wanted to let you guys know that I am still planning on a part hunting mission.
?
Jim 95 - do you have a part number for the TCM just in case it might not be a match in the later model vans.?
The fuse panel on the left side of steering wheel was messed with pretty good, but I can look, is there where you mean for the position 22?
I think the vents were there, I can grab them if they are still there.
I am pretty sure the EGR valve is gone with the engine, but I can double check.
?
Thanks,
?
Mark??

Re: Eurovan Winnebago conversion in the local junk yard
Interesting. Here’s a screenshot of a random search I just did for a 2003 Eurovan transmission w/distances listed from my zip. One thing to note is the models listed under Volkswagen are mostly alphabetical with the exception of the Eurovan which is listed further down as a sub of “Van”.
?
?
?
As they say YMMV but this is a salvage yard parts database not a new car database that’s been very handy to me over the years.

Re: Eurovan Winnebago conversion in the local junk yard
95 Eurovan? 5cly needs
I haven't had a moment to research what years the part will match a 95 EV.??
I looked high and low for these out-of-build items, other than a Transmission Control Module rebuild, they are still not found.
The power steering transmission control module is located on the right front passenger kick panel.
Fuse block for AC S23- Fuse for fresh air blower motor and A/C compressor clutch (30 amp) located on aux relay panel, position 22
Dashboard plastic air grill on far left and right of dashboard.
