Re: 2003 EV Transmission fluid and dipstick?'s #tranny

There is a document somewhere online on transmission temps and fluid life.? If I remember 235 f on occasion is not gonna kill a synthetic atf.? ?It will reduce life to years not decades. Running at? 250 F? or 260 f? takes it down to months. Sorry I can't find the document right now.??

Not Phil, but I say anything over 200 is asking for trouble.? It can climb quickly after that, so 200 gives you time to find a stopping place to cool down.? I've only had to stop twice and ran the a/c (for fans) both times.? Temp was back down to 170 within 5 minutes.? When it does get hot, just change the fluid when you get home.? (If it happens to hit 278, 4th gear will be locked out.)

FYI, the biggest cause of high temps is having the torque converter unlock.? It's easy to push just a tad too hard on the gas pedal and cause that, especially on a climb.? Unfortunately, I haven't found a signal to monitor lockup other than watching the tach because it's an electro-mechanical lockup.

Phil, thanks for this info. Very interesting. I had a cooler installed on my ¡®99EVC, but according to my Scanguage still get hot on those steep slow roads where I spend a lot of miles. I had considered adding an override switch to activate the cooling fans. What do you think of that? You mention using the AC to activate the fans. Hmmm. Do you see a significant transmission temperature response when you do that?

?

What do you, or others, consider to be dangerously high temps? My TFT has gotten up to 235 with the cooler for short periods. Makes me nervous. I don¡¯t know how high it went before the cooler was installed cuz I didn¡¯t have the Scangauge.

Thanks / Kozmo

I¡¯ve had a cooler since I bought my EV @82 kmi in 2007 and a dip stick about the same time. ?I change my ATF from above (since about 180kmi thru the dipstick for ease between every 10 kmi to 15 kmi, and although it varies, I change the filter ( and fluid ) both about every 30 to 40 km, I¡¯m still establishing that pattern. ?The dip method yields 2.7 L to 3.4 L typically (may depend on how long you wait - overnight- for the fluid to drain back to the reservoir. I switched to Valvaline Maxlife at about 180 kmi and am perfectly happy with it. ?I have the original trans, although at about 227 kmi I had to pull it and send it to GTA in Bend Or. due to a couple buck seal on the front of the trans pump (internal) so I decided to have it looked over and any wear points replaced by a company I fully trusted by many EVs and mechanics reviews as at 227 I figured it only made sense, even though my trans has never had issues- parts do wear out.

I've been using Febi-Bilstein 29934 for almost all of the late model transmissions, mostly on Rialtas.? Some folks use the Pentosin, but many have switched over to Valvoline MaxLife.? The Febi and Pentosin are light brown, the Valvoline is red.? Recently, a couple of folks have used the Pentosin ATF6 which is supposed to be the replacement for ATF1, but I haven't heard any additional reports.

Also, is anyone using a dipstick AND an aftermarket Transmission cooler?
A lot of the Rialta folks have both, but I don't really think a dipstick is needed.? Makes the fluid easier to get in is about all it accomplishes (unless you suspect a leak and want to watch the level closer).? Using the external cooler and/or dipstick doesn't change anything as far as doing a fluid change.? You do it by the book, then compare what the dipstick says, usually half way between the dots.? Once the level is correct, you can check the fluid at other temps to see where it will ride (higher for hot, lower for cold) so you don't have to always check it at 95-113F (35-45C).

As far as I know, the only place to get a dipstick and tube would be a scrapyard.? I made and sold almost 2000 kits, but haven't found anyone willing to invest the time and money ($$$$$) to make more since I don't want the job.

Re: 2003 EV Transmission Mount - Upper Left? #tranny

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

You can rebush the pendulum mount (bottom of engine ivo oil pan). But you can¡¯t ¡°rebush¡± the upper mounts. In theory you could replace the metal/rubber ¡°canister¡± without doing the carrier bracket on the upper left side but I¡¯ve never seen the canister available by itself, new anyway.

I¡¯ve replaced the pendulum mount (including engine side bushing) and right side mount but had avoided the left mount due to availability/pricing. I can¡¯t avoid the left mount any longer (it¡¯s letting me know it¡¯s done after 19yrs).

Amazon sells the MTC one for $100. I¡¯m skeptical on the brand so please report back your findings for the benefit of the community.?

I¡¯ve ordered one from Europa Parts (in NJ) for a bit over $400 including shipping. Based on the description (¡° OE Aftermarket¡±), I¡¯m expecting Lemf?rder. I¡¯ll report back when swap is done.

2003 EV Transmission fluid and dipstick?'s #tranny

Edited

Hi All,

I've been using Pentosin ATF-1 for transmission fluid on my EV, but Pentosin has discontinued ATF-1 and it's been replaced at my local parts store.? I love that smell and know Pentosin ATF-1 is still available, but I'm interested what other folks are using?? (Febi, Liqui Moly, ZF, Fuchs, Motul, other?).

Also, is anyone using a dipstick AND an aftermarket Transmission cooler?? Where can I get the dipstick conversion, and I'm curious how much more fluid is required and if using the DIPSTICK with the COOLER changes the "normal" fluid filling process.??

Thanks,
Tom

2003 EV Transmission Mount - Upper Left? #tranny

Hi, Does anyone have a source for the "Upper left" Transmission mount for a 2003 EV MV?? (Ref Lemfoerder / VW # 2537001) Auto Trans Mount.

I've tried many sources, and they are all out of stock and claim the part has been discontinued or currently unavailable.? Or is there a way to rebuild the bushings?
Thanks!

The group name on YG was actually ev_update, so if you haven't already, that would be a good alias to add.

Assuming VW doesn't get feisty about it, it eliminates the confusion over EV meaning "Electric Vehicle" that has occurred over the years.
Will the new VW electric vehicle, like the Buzz, be the EVEV? ;>)

Re: Where to sell?

I appreciate all the quick advice. We've lurked here for many years
picking up this and that information about our EVC but hadn't been reading
regularly the past few years. Didn't realize it was OK to send for-sale
notes here.

The van has 53,341 miles. Needs a bit of minor this and that which we
would have attended to this spring if we hadn't concluded it's just the
wrong vehicle for my folks (who are not getting any younger) at this point
in their lives. Climbing up into the upper bunk is getting to be a bit of
a struggle for them and we want to get rid of our shared van they can no
longer really share and get them into something they can use comfortably.

No rust to speak of despite being a New York (suburbs) car - though one of
the reasons we had the original BBQ-style tank taken off and replaced with
the "sausage" style was that _it_ was getting a bit rusty. New tank is
fine and of course improves ground clearance a bit.

I put up a classified ad at TheSamba on the recommendation of several
people who emailed me on the list and privately -

Thor
