Hey everybody, here’s the short and long of my problem.
the short: transmission is leaking from around the pan gasket.
the long: The issue started last year on a 2 week trip from MN out
throught the black hills, through yellowstone, the tetons(broke down),
glacier and back. We went over many mountain passes, I watched the
scan gauge and when the temp got over 230 i pulled over and gave the
van a rest and let things cool down. in the middle of the tetons we
discovered that there was no oil in the van. we were able to get
enough oil to limp back to jackson where we found a very helpful
mechanic. he was able to fix the oil leak and noticed that we were
also leaking transmission fluid. he was able to make our old gasket
work and topped off the fluids, but told me when we get it back i
should get it in for a transmission service and replace the gasket
with a new one.

When we returned from our trip we had the van in to my mechanic to fix
it properly, it was still leaking and making a mess all over. we
brought it in, they "fixed it", I also had them install a transmission
cooler (i believe the go westy one) then we found it leaking
transmission fluid again from the pan gasket. brought it back, they
fixed it again. then we put it in storage for the winter, when we
picked it up from storage there was a puddle of transmission fluid
under the van. starting to get irritated here...

We then decided to bring it to a different mechanic. the first one
had ticked me off on a few other things, I saw another EVC at another
mechanic so i decided to give them a try. They said that the leak was
coming from the pan gasket, so time to replace it. another $320 for a
gasket and fluid change. we let it sit in our garage for a few weeks
and no leaks! we decided to take it on a longer drive as a "shakedown
cruise" for an upcoming camping trip that we have planned, drove it
for a few hours, temps never got higher than 170 which was still
higher than i expected with our cooler in place. anyways parked it in
the garage when we were done and let it sit for a week, last night we
pulled it out of the garage and there is a puddle under the van, trans
fluid. what could the issue be? i'm sick of dealing with this thing,
just want it fixed, it's starting to affect my enjoyment of the
vehicle. is there any way the pan or transmission could have warped
to make the seal not work properly?
Thanks in advance!

Re: 1999 EVC Transmission Leak

your transmission pan is warped so the gasket will not make a tight seal.

solution, staighten pan, ?or replace it

I'm working on the same problem.

EPC Light ON in 02 EVC

EPC indicator on dash lit up 5 miles from home after driving 500 hot miles from Montana. I drove it for short trips around town the next day. EPC still on.

Started to take it to a shop today… 10 miles into drive light goes out.

Engine performance wise…all seems fine. ?I have a scangauge II and no codes were thrown.

Only recent work done it it: changed oil and filter, installed tranny cooler, replaced engine radiator fans.

Thoughts, ideas? ?Maf, other? ?Is this heat playing games with sensors?

Re: Power Windows stuck down - any way to raise them?

Try opening the door and then using the switch. If the malfunction is a faulty wire, opening the door sometimes reconnects the wire. I found this out when troubleshooting.

Re: Power Windows stuck down - any way to raise them?

There could be a broken wire in the wiring harness in the door jam.? It may not work but hold the button in the up position and open the door slowly, you "may" find a spot where the wires connect temporally and get the window up.
?
You need to address the broken wires when you get home.

My 2000 EVC had the power windows go out and are stuck about 6 inches
down, and naturally it's 100F weather. My current goal is just to make
it home, at which point I'll debug the electrical issues.

Is there any way to manually raise the windows by removing the door panels?

thanks!

Dear Frying in your Van

The best solution is to remove the small rubber boot connecting the driver's door to the frame enough so you can see where the wires in the driver'sdoor harness are broken, jumper broken wires of the same color together and apply power and the windows will go up, This is to assume you have correctly described the problem and both windows are unserviceable. The reason we assume it is the break in the driver's door harness because it is the most opened door and therefore fatigue breaks in wiring harness occur there first. There is probably only one broken wire, or at most two.

On my 02 EVC- the relay is on the firewall next to the coach battery transfer switch. They have been known to go bad.

Well, seems I spoke too soon. Gremlins are back. The van drove and ran
fine for about an hour, then we stopped. Upon restarting it, we now have
the following symptoms:

1. Power windows and mirrors no longer work. (Power door locks are fine)
2. The yellow wire that goes to the House Battery Relay is now reading
zero volts, even when the engine is running.

Any ideas? the user manual says there is no fuse for the power windows
but that it has a circuit breaker which will automatically reset. Where
is this located?

After a number of false starts, I figured out that the problem is.... the
IGNITION SWITCH. The same switch that I replaced a few weeks ago! Very
confusing. I confirmed this after taking apart the dash, bypassing the
position 4 (labeled "18") load reduction relay, and finally wiggling the
ignition switch connectors on the back side and getting the circuit to cut
out and back in.

Maybe the replacement switch was bad? Maybe there's a secondary problem
in the key tumbler/cylinder?

The good news is that NAPA auto parts has them in stock, so I didn't have
to wait for the VW dealer to open Monday morning.

I also learned a few things about the European relays, and I'll write up
some notes when I return.

Thanks for your help!

Trying to fix blower

?
I have the air bag out and I had purchased a new blower but I think there is a different issue.? I tested the fan in the dash by applying 12v and it turns fine.? I then took the leads from the dash fan and applied them to the new fan and it does not turn.? I did check the voltage at the fan leads and it was 11v on fan high and the voltage decreased as I turned in down in the climatronic.
?
Suggestions from here?? It's an '03 EV MV with Climatronic.

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Gas Tank is releasing dangerous fumes

Interesting that you should post. I just got back from a little road trip climbing over a mountain pass of ~8000' in high 80 degree temps. Thought I smelled gas while on a stop before the pass but didn't make much of it. Once on the other side, we stopped and I smelled it again. Then, my wife heard a gurgling noise from under the drivers seat area. So, I stuck the key in the gas cap and slowly loosened it. Couldn't believe how much pressure had built up! ?

Never noticed this before...after climbing over this and other passes a multitude of times since 97 (my van is a 95 EVC, 5 spd) and didn't have an issue coming home on the same route today....though it was at least 10 degrees cooler.

At any rate, thanks for posting! Question though: Has this been a common issue with these vans?

?
After convincing myself that my evap system charcoal canister was the
reason my gas tank was building up substantial pressure, releasing
fumes and causing gurgling noises coming from the tank, I tried one last
thing. I replaced the evap purge regulator, a 15 minute job with no tools
required!

After changing the EVAP purge regulator in Santa Fe, everything functioned
perfectly with no pressure build up all the way to Denver and beyondSmiling face with open mouth and cold sweat

I've attached a photo of the location behind the antifreeze reservoir. And
here is the link to the $40.00 part for my 97 EVC

http://autoplicity.com/3307277-bosch-0280142308?utm_source=GoogleShopping&utm_medium=CSE&utm_content=3307277NOFITMENT&utm_campaign=GSNOFITMENT&gclid=CO2ZsuDcwsYCFc5lfgodbNgCcQ

Seems like this is a good place to start for anyone with this problem as
it is quick and cheap.

Clearly, altitude and temperature are factors as others have pointed out on
the EVC website. We will continue on our trip while monitoring the
situation.

I've had some anxious days over this.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my problem has been solved once and for
all....
