Re: Gas Tank is releasing dangerous fumes

Re: Gas Tank is releasing dangerous fumes
开云体育I haven't been following this thread closely, so I apologize if I'm off target and not helpful. The solution, I thought, was to not "top off" your tank when you fill up. When the pump clicks off, I stop. I don't try to round up to the next even dollar or fill some more slowly until it clicks off again. Nothing. Just stop after it shuts off for the first time. After I started doing that, I've never had an off-gassing issue. It used to happen somewhat frequently before I changed my refill procedure.? I hope this is helpful.? Re: Gas Tank is releasing dangerous fumes
Dan Phalen
Hi August and all?
Here is what I have learned?regarding Gas tank fumes and the Evap System Charcoal Canister. Back before emission standards, fumes from the tank were released directly?into the environment via a?vent. The tank was an open system. When emission controls entered the scene, the open system was replaced by a closed system to prevent fumes from being released.? The Evap canister is designed to accumulate fumes from the gas tank so that they can be burned, thus eliminating releases into the environment as well as preventing?pressure build up?in the tank. The canister is filled with charcoal particles to absorb tank fumes that can then be burned. There is a fan upstream of the canister that is activated when you turn on the engine. This forces the stored fumes into the fuel system to be burned rather ?than released. The problem arises if gas somehow gets into the canister which is only designed for fumes.? This can happen if you over fill the tank by topping it off after the fill up shuts off automatically. The intake for the fumes, located at the top of the tank?takes in liquid gas. The gas then dissolves the charcoal which then clogs the system preventing the fumes from burning off and building pressure in the tank. If just a little gas gets in, the clog may be rather minimal just leading to minor pressure build up. If a lot of gas gets in, the charcoal can dissolve into a sort of muddy mess that completely clogs and shuts down the system. At that point, the only fix is to replace the canister which can cost up to $1,000 or so (I may be off on the price).? If, however, the gas in the canister is minimal, the diminished capacity may be just a minor annoyance you can live with. Some have had success removing the canister and blowing out the liquids with an air hose. This is more likely to be successful if the amount of gas is minimal.? The issue is exacerbated when it is hot, and at higher altitudes. I am currently in Santa Fe at 7,000 feet with 90 degree plus temperatures during the heat of the day. The fume and pressure build up is much greater during the day. When it cools down at night, 60 degrees or so, the pressure build up is far less.? In my case, i think that a lot of gas got in. When I shut off the engine, I hear a gurgling noise coming from under the van that is presumably gas gurgling in the canister. Yesterday I had a shop remove the canister and blow air through it to open it up and force out as much gas as possible. Some folks have had success with this approach. I have yet to determine if this works for me. I'll report back in another post. As far as safety goes, everything I've read and been told unanimously says this is not an issue. I've also been told that the tank can take considerable pressure. This is from web sites on various vehicles. While this may be true, my tank builds up so much pressure on very hot days that I'm not willing to take the risk. I fear that a hose or line might fail.? Next week we are headed for Montana and then back to Seattle. My wife and I alternate drivers about every 200 miles, and we will be opening the gas cap each time we stop?to keep the pressure low. We'll see how this goes. When we return to Seattle, we will decide whether or not to replace the canister. As long as we keep the tank pressure low, I'm not concerned about safety for the duration of the trip.?Back in cooler Seattle at sea level, this may be less of a problem. This is probably way more detailed information than you were expecting. If anyone can add to this or if I have gotten any of the facts wrong, please straighten me out.? In the mean time I intend to enjoy the rest of the summer... Dan -- Dan Phalen |

Re: Norcold's stopped cooling on propane
Okay, so it looks like I was wrong about it working. Well I was right that it worked for a bit, but it stopped cooling again today.
Burner is running fine and staying on, just no cooling. Damn I feel stupid. Take it out and leave it upside down for a day? Is there anything else to do? |
getting rid of 2 doors (with parts) from 2003 EV
Brian Copenhagen
I have finally replaced the doors on my 2003 MV Weekender, and I am now faced with getting rid of the old doors. They are emerald green, with minor damage just above the curve. Since I was able to source the matching doors for quite cheaply, I decided to just replace them, instead of doing body work on them.
If anyone has a more severely damaged door, or needs parts from doors, I want to get rid of these in the next week. Potentially useful parts include: Windows + window hardware Interior door panels Exterior door handles Interior door handle (passenger)s (1) Lock stem (1) passenger wiring harness If anyone is interested, I am in Oakland, CA. I can ship the smaller stuff, and maybe even the windows, but probably not the entire doors, unless someone out there is desperate. I can email photos of particular parts. Re: Norcold's stopped cooling on propane
I've cleaned the box already. ?No issues there, but I'll probably replace the burner with the nicer newer version, but that's not the issue here.
I've realized the issue. ?We were off-level by quite a bit. ?I've read a bunch about just how bad that is, but there it is. ?Once we we were level we got back down to 35 or so. ?I'm hoping there's not too much precipitation, but if there is I will work to fix it. Thanks.Peet |
Re: Chronic Limp Mode - 97 EVC
Hey gph,
Sorry for being inaccurate. I meant that the transmission shifted into 4th gear.? Limp mode locks the van into 3rd gear no matter what.? When in limp mode, my van tends to correct itself randomly while driving steadily along the hiway in 3rd gear.? Out of the blue it will shift up into 4th and operate normally for a time. |

开云体育Trevor Reid is the sky light guy, at least his company has access to a replacement that is the same as the originals BUT he is extremely hard to do business with. ?It may be because he is in Canada and I am not, although he has sent me photos of what he has, he has not responded to my numerous requests to purchase it. Yes, I had a too close encounter with my garage Yes, I have searched through the conversations on this site. Yes. It seems I am not alone. Yes, I have searched for the Skylight Guy, but no luck. So, of those of you with cracked/broken roof vents/skylights, what did you do? ?Glue? ?Duct tape? |
Re: Potentially Very Cool Gadget - Wireless Battery Monitor
Looks like a nice gadget.? Of course, I learn of it now after having just finished installing a Victron BVM 700 battery monitor this past weekend in my 2002 EVC! ? I had removed the rear seat/bed and the left side plastic panel?because I was doing the 1705.net Magnetron power converter replacement.? So while?all of this?was open, I?fished the Victron cable from this area, up and behind the closet to the control panel above the Norcold (I also installed Sam's Norcold relay mod while I had the panel off, easy install and Sam's instructions are great).? I drilled?the round hole necessary to mount the Victron display in this panel and it looks really good,? But, I sure would have been tempted by a wireless install!? ? Best, ? Rick |
Re: Gas Tank is releasing dangerous fumes
Hi Dan,
This gas tank fume/pressure issue appears to be common and as JT mentioned has been discussed on the list recently . I have the same problem in my '95 EVC. The consensus seems to be that it is related to the charcoal canister / evap system. However, I haven't seen anyone post back with a clear fix for the problem. If you or anyone is able to solve the problem I would love to hear the solution! It's certainly a potential safety issue not to mention the fumes are extremely annoying especially with the driver side window down on a warm day. Best, August '95 EVC? |
