Goodday mate,
A friend of mine up in Watsonia (northern suburb of Melbourne) just
bought one of those half truck half van jobs. Years ago we called them
Combi"s (combination of models) but other area of the world call them by
different names.
He bought it brandnew and I think he puts his brand new Harley in the
back.. Come to think of it, that might be impossible to do.

Nash Bridges is filmed in San Francisco, which I'd guess is a good
contender for the VW bus capital of the USA. I live about 15 mile
north of the city. I can't imagine them filming on location and NOT
catching a few EV's.

It's interesting seeing the "EV sightings" messages that come across
this list periodically. For the past 6 months, I've made a conscious
effort to track my EV sightings when I go somewhere nearby. I have
not yet had a single day without an EV sighting, at least not when
I've spent more than a half hour on the road (and no, I'm not counting
my own van!). Record was 10 EV's and 2 Rialtas, one Saturday when I
was driving in Marin and Sonoma counties for about three hours.

VW definitely does not sell the EV's equally across the country. Not
sure why the concentration in this area, except that it's certainly
not because of VW's marketing efforts. There are MANY, MANY of the
older vanagons and busses around here; that probably has something to
do with it.

Mike,
My old EVC dealer directory dated 1997 only shows one dealer in Virginia
that carries EVCs and that's Springfield VW in Springfield up in northern
VA. I live in Maryland and purchesed my 97 there. I'd suggest calling
the VW 800 number(1-800-DRIVE VW) to see if there are any closer to
Richmond.

EV rear brake shoes - Reason for - Tip

The problem as I understand it is due to the moisture and the Semi met
pads.
When you leave it sit after any type of moisture on the parts they rust
up fast and stick to the drums.
I asked the VW rep a long time ago about the rust specks all over the
white paint and he told me it was the metalic breakdust stuck to the
paint. It comes off hard but I found WD-40 sprayed on the intire paint
job cleans it up easier. Bugs and tar comes right off. I then washed
the WD off with Dawn dish soap and waxed it up. It worked great on my
white Cabriolet also.

The best thing to do after a puddle or rain storm is to ride the brakes
a little before parking for the night hoping to dry them off a little
more.
I had new shoes from Midas added and do not recall this happening
since. See how this winter goes.

Is it true that there were only 500 93 EV MV's with the weekender
package in the USA. Has anyone else heard that? It is my
understanding that Canada recieved some 92's and 94's with the Westi
top. Did Canada also receive any syncro's?

Is it possible to order a new EVMVWK in canada and bring it across the
boarder. With the exchange rate/taxes would it be cost effective?

I read that the gas heaters are an option and that the block heaters
are included. I would consider a new one with the heater on a timer if
VW still has that feature in Canada. My 86 Vanagon Syncro book shows
that option and it seems like it would be nice to have for our winters
in WI. Getting into a warmed up van when it is -40 outside would be a
treat after work.

I have added the VW block heater ($85) to my 93 5cyl. Don't know if it
really helps or not though. It is an electric element incased in a
molten pour of aluminum that you bolt to the block and run the cord out
by the tie down hook. I also added an electric battery blanket and I
think that helps the most.

Bought a couple jugs of the new Prestone 5 year longlife antifreeze. I
see it is phosphate free like VW calls for. Any tips on the best way
to flush and refill? I usally swap the heater regulator valve and the
kit hose hook up piece to flush and fill then swap back. Is that
doable on this EV? It has not been changed since the pistons were
changed a couple years ago. Worth doing?

Yegs - getting winterized in WI.

Re: Another propane tank mystery

I mean that if the temp is below freezing, the butane will not turn into a
gas. So nothing will light, unless of course there is some propane.

We discovered this the hard way. We camped at 10,500 feet. IT was about 40
when we went to bed. We woke up at about 12:00 and the temp in the van was
about 10 degrees. We had to stick the dog under the covers to stay warm.

The display will flash any time the voltage is greater than 15 volts, this
indicates that your over charging the battery. This will ruin the battery
in a short period of time. It is possible that the voltage regulator in the
alternator needs to be replaced. To check this have a mechanic check the
starter battery voltage while the engine is running if it is greater than
14v you may need to have the alternator repaired.

We bought our Canandian imported Eurovan a year ago at Carter in
Seattle. We do not have any piston slap; no problems at all after a
year. We went on a short trip to the Oregon coast and the Cascades in
Oregon in July. I drive it to work every day (about 9 miles one-way).
I have one question: The read-out 'screen' on the ceiling console
blinks 15.1 volts when it is supposed to be reading the stored volts of
the aux. battery. (When that battery is being used, like to run the
frig., it reads lower, accordingly). Does anyone know what the 15.1
volts blink means???
Thanks. - Jay

I'd love to know how much trouble it was when the egg eventually disintegrated. Many years ago my uncle, a dairy farmer in the Central Valley, found himself out in the country with a holed radiator. He filled it with milk and limp into town.
It worked, but the smell of fried milk never left the vehicle, and my uncle rode alone.

Re: EV MV Search

Vance, Beaumont W.

I had the same concerns when I bought our 95 EVC (Daisy) 8 months ago. I
talked to a lot of Audi and VW mechanics and, as far as the engine goes,
they all agreed that the flat Five Cyl. will run just about forever. Ours
has about 110,000 now and it runs great. I have had no engine problems. The
only things I would be concerned about are the smaller items like the
heater fan and air conditioning. But those seem to be problematic at any
mileage.

If I had a choice though, I would sure like the v-6 automatic. Mainly
because of the amount of traffic in the Denver-Boulder area.

I've spent the day looking around the Denver area for an EV MV in decent
shape to replace the one that was totaled in the horse accident. I could
only find three available. I drove two and saw one in a parking lot.

1. The first was a '93 EV MV Weekender automatic with 125,000 miles and an
asking price of $8,500 in fairly good shape. It's green and named "Puff".

2. The second one was a '93 EV MV automatic with 112,000 miles for $5,500 in

less than terrific shape. White.

3. There is also an EV MV Weekender here in Boulder with 83,000 for which
they are asking $13,900 - I haven't driven this one but it has a fair amount

of rust along the left hand body panel seam.

I like Puff the best but I am concerned about the high mileage. I'd like to
know about peoples experience with EV's over 100,000 miles and what it might

cost to rebuild an engine or transmission if that became necessary in the
not
so distant future.

I also came across a '99 EV MV Weekender in the back lot of a dealer that
none of the sales people knew anything about. I'm hoping they'll be able to
find out more on Monday.

That's it. Thanks all,

1992 Drivable Eurovan

TYA

Dear Eckhard & List,

Here is the information on the 1992 Eurovan I just found again. It is in
the $3000 (Canadian /$2,000 US) Edmonton Alberta autotrader. The van is at
Custom Auto and Truck parts, 14124 140 Street in Edmonton, Alberta (about
10 miles from where I live). Their phone numbers are 780-456-1666 or
1-800-465-9706 (although I doubt the number works from the USA).

The listing shows a white Eurovan (but it looks like a camper) definitely
not a panel van.
1992 Volkswagen Eurovan 2.5 L, auto o/d, loaded, parting out,

Good luck and happy hunting. I am supposed to leave to go to Toronto
bright and early Monday morning or I would check the vehicle out. If the
weather is too bad and I don't fly the plane I am willing to check it out
for list members. Please submit your questions immediately.

Reg

The rest of the story on this Eurovan is it is a 7 passenger van, with a
156,000 KM, about 100,000 US miles, heated seats, cruise, auto, air, light
blue, and asking price is $4500 Canadian ($3,000 US) for the whole van.
The van has light damage on the passenger side door. The van is drivable.

Think of it as a rolling parts bin.
