Re: '99 MV wanted + advice?

Brandon,
I also live near Princeton, NJ. I purchased my '93 EV from Flemington VW.
They have consistently carried the EuroVan line and offer good prices. Give
them a call and see if they have any '99 models left.

Dear Alex,

The Don Johnson show was Nash Bridges. Being a Canadian I don't know what
US network carries Nash Bridges, and since I have peasant TV (no cable or
satellite) I don't get US channels only US shows picked up by Canadian
independent channels.

I saw a Blue EV on Nash Bridges last night. In a parking lot scene near a
soccer game if I am correct. It appeared in two scenes if I remember
correctly looked like a 92 on.

John,
There was a "95 EV (Winnebago) advertised I think in the Denver Post (might have been the Rocky Mtn News, I get both) last week for $16500. Didn't mention what the mileage was.

Well folks, another EV bites the dust.

Tuesday night I was coming home on a 55 mph two lane road and broadsided a horse. I saw it in time to slam on the brakes and cut the speed a bit before impact. The poor horse went flying and slid a good 30 ft. before coming to rest. A state trooper had to put it out of it's misery.

I was the only one in the van and I'm fine, unfortunately the van is totaled. I'll be looking for another EV MV, preferably a weekender. If I can't find one in suitably good condition, I don't know what I'll get. Wish me luck.

Re: Piston slap - My story

I am curious if the rep identified what caused the cracking sound. Was it
related to the piston slap? Up until now I thought the piston slap would not
have an impact on engine longevity however based on your story I'm not so
sure anymore. My '93 EV MV was purchased new March '94 and also began to
have the piston slap at around 22-23K. I had the dealer document the noise
in a service visit. I now have nearly 89K and the sound is slightly lounder
buts goes away when warmed up. In another message it was suggested that
improperly cured blocks was the culprit. This suggesta that replacement
pistons (as some owners had done under warranty) would not resolve the issue.
Maybe the new pistons would resolve it for another 20K or so until they
became worn again.

Anyway, all this gets me a bit concerned and I sometimes wonder if all the
positives of this van outweigh the issues. On the other hand I must say that
my particular van to date has been exteremely dependable with only the basic
maintenance. Maybe next year will be different but I hope not. Looks like
some preventative maintenance with the fule and collant lines might be a wise
thing to do

Re: Heater Core Leak

I believe there are some alternative fixes for the coolant line that avoid
removal of the gas tank. I think you make a bypass to go below the tank.
Perhaps another member of this list can help.

Re: EV rear brake shoes

Freeze up of rear brakes is common problem on the EV. I've locked mine in
cold weather on at laest two occasions. Try to avoid using the parking brake
when you know they are wet and it will sit overnight in cold weather.

Re: EV Sighting on TV

The best TV sighting I saw was a EuroVan Camper in the updated Disney
"Herbie" movie. How about a new "Herbie" movie based on the New Beetle that
has a EuroVan pal that tows it to the racetrack. What a great promotion it
would be for both!

Obviously this is a sly new marketing campaign by VW. At least the EV's are

I think about VW's EV non-marketing every time I see overly repeated
broadcast ads for Ford's new Focus or other mass marketed vehicles. Why
doesn't VW advertise the EVC, or at the very least, the EV?

In the past, knowing that one day I would have to replace my old van with
something new, I had dismissed the VW Bus Camper as inconveniently small. I
was considering building a new van camper similar to my old one, hoping to be
able to install a popup roof to achieve a garageable vehicle with stand up
room. However, a year ago, while browsing through an old (1991) Rand McNally
Road Atlas, I came across the informative, full page, ad for the 1990 VW
Westfalia. It highlighted its versatility, including not only a campsite
photo, but demonstrating that it fits in a standard garage as well. Part of
the text reads, "Think of the Camper as part mini-van, part limousine, part
pick-up truck and part recreational vehicle and you'll understand what we
mean by versatile." That ad led me to an Internet search which ultimately
brought me to this mailing list, the crown jewel of EuroVan informative data.
I will say one thing for VW advertising; considering the road I am heading
down now, a single ad sure goes a long way!

gauges, coolant

The Eurovan's gauges, (water, Fuel) goes bad after a few years, the
only thing what have to be replaced is a $10 dollar resistor in the
back of the gauges. It has 3 legs, a small black square resistor.
Someone could also locate this resistor in an electrical store for $1.
It worked for me!!

Also be very carefull for the water sensors. There is one sensing the
water level, and one for the water temperature. For me the water level
didnt work and it costed me a 1700 dollar used engine, because the
engine overheated, after the water pump failed. Also don't use regular
water for coolant without anti-freeze, becaue regular water eats up all
your aluminium parts after a while. Andy xtassy@...

Piston slap - My story

I bought my 93 EVMVWK in Jan 96 as the third owner and 23K on it. I
went over it with a fine tooth comb and had as much fixed on the 2 year
24K warranty as possible. It was put in service March 94. I asked the
dealer then about the pistons and they said they knew nothing about it.
A pastor I talked to said he had his done at the same dealer at 35K and
it was much quiter and stronger. He recommended I bug them to have it
done. His was leased and they might get it back.

That same winter when it dipped to -30 or more the van would not start.
I added the block heater and fuel heat but no help. Finally after the
world warmed up 6 days later the van started with a big crack! I
thought I broke something major. After that the pistons started
knocking worse and it sounded like a diesel.

By Nov 96, @ 29K and a good VW rep visit later for some other items,
the dealer service rep that new nothing about the pistons, fixed
another one, Mine.
The VW rep said get it done before your 5 /50k runs out.

After replacing with a new design he showed me the old ones that had to
be shipped back to VW. The shoulders of the pistons were wore down on
two sides on all five, a couple worse than the others. Even he could
not believe how bad they were. He said none of the others vans were
that bad. HA! so there was more!

The new design has a rounded top rather than concaved and it changed
the compresion a little. I recall the tac running a 1000 slower at 60.
3 years and 24K later it has been better, smoother and quieter.

Mine is engine code AAF and Tranny CGK. Hope I have better luck with
the Tranny than some of you.

Yegs,

Q: why and who would put butane in the tank?

A: my understanding is that Butane is a more efficient and hotter burning
gas. It appears that VW/Winnie believes that all camping is done in the
summer (hence the single choice of white.) I have been told that in warmer
climates propane tanks are filled with a propane/butane mixture. I would
guess that Winnebago puts the butane in (if it is indeed butane.)
I've heard that butane is added to propane during summer months, but i've not sure
if its done everywhere. the problem with butane is that it doesn't burn below 32F - those
with butane stoves may have noticed this on really cold mornings (back in those backpacking
days!)
When I bought the '95, it was up to the VW dealer to purge the tank of (possible) water and
bring all the systems up to snuff. Even then, some dealers were better at it than others
it seems. I doubt that VW would be shipping vans from Iowa loaded with propane, but then
you never know.

Actually, I believe the part in question is a voltage regulator, and in our case, the solder joint was bad. Reheat/add solder and you're ready to go.

How many 93 EVMVWK? + winter(ize) talk

Is it true that there were only 500 93 EV MV's with the weekender
package in the USA. Has anyone else heard that? It is my
understanding that Canada recieved some 92's and 94's with the Westi
top. Did Canada also receive any syncro's?

Is it possible to order a new EVMVWK in canada and bring it across the
boarder. With the exchange rate/taxes would it be cost effective?

I read that the gas heaters are an option and that the block heaters
are included. I would consider a new one with the heater on a timer if
VW still has that feature in Canada. My 86 Vanagon Syncro book shows
that option and it seems like it would be nice to have for our winters
in WI. Getting into a warmed up van when it is -40 outside would be a
treat after work.

I have added the VW block heater ($85) to my 93 5cyl. Don't know if it
really helps or not though. It is an electric element incased in a
molten pour of aluminum that you bolt to the block and run the cord out
by the tie down hook. I also added an electric battery blanket and I
think that helps the most.

Bought a couple jugs of the new Prestone 5 year longlife antifreeze. I
see it is phosphate free like VW calls for. Any tips on the best way
to flush and refill? I usally swap the heater regulator valve and the
kit hose hook up piece to flush and fill then swap back. Is that
doable on this EV? It has not been changed since the pistons were
changed a couple years ago. Worth doing?

Yegs - getting winterized in WI.

Re: Head Gasket Leak

Steve,

Sorry to tell you the bad news, but you are going to have to fix this.
Its not going to go away. The good news, is that it isn't going to be
that hard - the 2.5L engine is a SOHC engine design and everything is
easy to get at. If you haven't replaced the timing belt, you'll get it
done when you get this done.

WARNING: be careful about using the coolant leak sealing stuff. I
used it when my Supra had started to loose the headgasket - I ment this
to be a temp solution. The problem with using this stuff is that it
can clog the radiator and/or heater core. I had to pull the radiator
and have it cleaned. I never cleaned the heater core because it would
have been a nightmare to pull it out from under the dash. For the EV,
you are also risking the rear heater core as well. When the heater
core's get clogged, you don't get much heat out... If you have to use
the stuff, isolate the heater lines. That way you are only circulating
the stuff in the engine and radiator.

If you do the work yourself, you'll save quite a bit, enough to maybe
have the head rebuilt. (Don't forget to have the head checked to
verify it has not warped, its easily corrected)

Good luck
Jerry

original article:
I've been told that my '93 EV MV has a head gasket leak.

It can't be very large as we only need to add coolant about once a
month, and
then it is only an inch or so below the fill line. It is leaking on
the
outside of the block with no indication that there is any compression
going
into the cooling system, or any antifreeze getting into the oil

I hate to spend the money to replace the head gasket, and I'm
thinking of
adding stop leak or bars leak to see if that will fix it.

I understand that it is SOP to add stop leak to some engines on the
assembly
line to make sure they seal properly.

Rear heater solutions

Many EV's came with aux rear heaters. EvC's came with a gas fired
furnace. But they all have these plastic lines. The books say that the
fuel tank and the torsion bar has to be removed to fix this correctly.
If (and when) this happends another way to fix it might be to find some
rubber heater hose and just bypass the plastic lines completely. Not
turning the valve on will prevent flow to the rear core but it will not
remove the pressure to it that casues the leaks.
